The more I listen to this song and watch the video, the more I think it's about suicide. She's singing about a girl who committed suicide. "Ink on her skin incomplete, and the faint sound of friends as she neared to the end; she had peace." God, it's so devastatingly heartbreaking.

If you like the sort of song that touches you emotionally . Listen to "amethyst" by Low a song about depression and the feelings of being alone in the world. it is coruscating and gives a lie to those who live in the past (calcified) and claim that modern music has no merit compared to the past ps Low are my fav band of the last 20 years . but there are many other wonderful bands and artists' about too

There are sooo many meanings I can see. I love songs like this for that reason. The first verse could be a girl who has been abused. Possibly domestic abuse, possibly growing up that way, possibly human trafficking. I see them all as possibilities. Whatever she is, she feels like she's underwater, and a caged bird. She's in the dark. She's in the cold. Could also mean homeless but like I said, so many meanings. Second verse could be suicidal. Faint sound of friends: she can't hear the sounds of her friends and probably believes she is very alone. She has no hope for the situation. In both situations, death is something she welcomes. She doesn't mind.
