Can't remember where I heard it, but someone said that LeBron is the ultimate floor-raiser (felt like he could take any team to the finals during his prime) and Steph is ultimate ceiling-raiser (elevates everyone around him and can play with anyone)

@@pex3 That's why it's called a ceiling raiser. You're starting with a team that already can contend, and you make it a lot better. A lot of players don't fit this mold because they're only dominant when the ball is in their hands all the time, or aren't great passers, etc. A lot of times, people only judge greatness by seeing how well the team does when he plays with a garbage roster, but that's not how championships are won. Those guys are floor raisers. But these guys don't necessarily mesh well when added to strong rosters so they only make the team a little better.

Hindsight is 20/20 here. Bill is using 2022 basketball landscape to grade 2014 decisions. Max Players weren’t being moved and making decisions like they are now. Bron also had the pressure of winning 6+ chips which justified his win now mentality where curry really hasn’t had that sort of pressure or expectation. I think the best example of Steph Curry being a very different player/personality than LeBron James is the way he took to his role in these playoffs of possibly being the sixth man. He seemed as if he was really into it and thought it was kind of cool. It's just about doing whatever it takes to play the best basketball that the team can play and that is pretty rare and this day and age.

I'm sure Lebron's "win now approach" emerged in response to his first 7 years with a franchise that had completely failed to build any semblance of a quality roster around him. The fact that Cleveland played at such a historically low level that they received 3 first overall draft picks in 4 years without him probably did not instill any confidence in James that they had learned how to successfully develop a winning roster.

The difference when it comes to building around Steph vs Lebron, comes down to Steph not starting his career as a super-star, even barely being a star while Lebron was a super star from jump and the expectations were different. Steph was allowed to develop and see where he fits in; on top of which he was injury prone early in his tenure. This allowed for the Warriors to maintain their core, plus the Warriors were not as guilty as the Cavs for front office malpractice.

I think the hardest thing for people to believe is that Curry had anything to do with how well his teammates play with him, and that Curry had anything to do with how players are empowered and developed while playing along side him. In 2015 and 16, Curry was so good, he made folks believe he was on a Superteam. But no one other than Steph was good enough to be the best player on a contending team. If we are being honest, KD was the only acquisition that was Super all by himself. Steph wasn't gifted a Super Klay, Green, Wiggs, Poole, Iggy, Barnes, etc. They became great around him and it was Steph's greatness that elevated their game. Name me another Superstar player in which players became great because of him? Duncan is the only guy that comes to mind. Most of the great guys LeBron played with were already great. No one became great because of KD, Kawhi, Harden, or any other player in this generation. Curry doesn't get enough credit for that.

Outside of Steph's gravity making everyone better, Steph's ankles being shoddy in the beginning was actually a blessing because that allowed for his ridiculously team friendly first contract. I believe he was the fourth or fifth highest paid player on his team for some time. That allowed GSW the cap space to sign for depth and eventually helped with getting Durant (although Durant coming was mostly due to the cap spike). Steph is the most unique all time great, thus he is more difficult to rank. He only averages like 5 or 6 assist over the course of his career yet his actual value to elevating a teammates is arguably up there right next to Magic Johnson with more explosive scoring ability. It's weird to say but there's never been an offensive player more valuable missing shots and just running around not even shooting. It's hard to measure something like that.

I'd agree with Russillo that the 2014 decision to leave the Heat is the one to question. Sometimes I think if LeBron ever got that continuity, and gave Pat Riley and Spo a chance to cultivate something, Miami could've become a juggernaut in later years. Of course Wade still has his injuries and Bosh leaves the league later, but we've seen time and time again the Heat know how to work around the salary cap and RIley always brings out them rings to attract free agent talent. Plus, Spo is the best coach in the league. I think if he stays on Miami they struggle for about 2-3 years, and then are able to make a big trade or attract a big free agent. Then the organization would be more stable and have a better cap situation and be set up for the future. The problem is LeBron would never have patience for that, and like Russillo said you can't argue with 8 straight Finals appearances lol. But it's fun to think about.

I don't know if the Warriors recruit Durant if they win the 2016 Finals. Also, take into account that the version of Kevin Love they got was not the best version of himself when he became a third option, and they had to take on additional cap space to roster him. Maybe Cleveland would've been better in 2017 and 2018 if they stuck with Wiggins? I mean, you're right that the trade was the best outcome, but it's fun to think what could've happened if they stuck with Wiggins. Wiggins is flourishing as a third option on GSW now. What if he started his career as one instead of being expected to carry the Minnesota franchise? What we can say for sure is that trading for Love increased CLE's chances of winning a title right away, but because they got into salary cap hell shortly afterward, it also accelerated LeBron's departure.

In my opinion, apart from the 7 feet towers, every star in this league is capable of playing with any combination of role players. LeBron James was right to influence the Cavs and the Lakers. I don't know as much about how much he tried to use his influence on personnel decisions for the heat, but I don't recall him being as vocal about it. I think that is warranted as well. You’re crazy, one Dwyane Wade could shoot the ball, it wasn’t a three point dominant league at the time. Mario Chalmers nor Bibby we’re ball dominant. Lastly, it just goes to show how much you don’t pay attention to but Chris bosh is not just a big man. If you really think about his contributions to the NBA he was the start to the stretch four. You can see it in his attempts from outside of 20 feet his rebound percentage is going down and the percentage of use in the post. He revolutionized his three point game, and had his career cut out from underneath them early. Now onto the second team he’s one with, he didn’t just play with a ball dominant point guard, he was playing with one of the best scorers of the time. Remember it’s Kyrie who hits that dagger three, much like 13 when he had to have another Hall of Famer bury the three that he missed. And remember at the time the Golden State Warriors were running scores up the wall. The desperate need for somebody who else could pop up 20 points a game from anywhere on the floor was desperately needed. once again Kevin Love was not a basic big man, comes off his peak in Minnesota, comes into Cleveland is not expected for 20 rebounds a game anymore not expected the count for 3/4 of their teams points. Kevin Love really became a great off the ball player. And was becoming efficient in a rapid hurry. Stretching his game back out from outside the post where he was forced to play in Minnesota in order to get every rebound. Kevin loves career change Kevin loves game changed. It is not shown that LeBron can play with anybody. If so why didn’t he win with Larry Hughes or Eddie snow. The reason why that they didn’t was because that these players could not get to the level that LeBron was at. I can’t stand LeBron, but if there’s one thing that he has always been able to do that I am praising a lot of the other players on this list that he has one with is that he has been able to elevate and change his game year by year no matter what the circumstances needed in order to try to win. That’s a mentality that not very many players have in the NBA, we hear about it all the time players being happy they scored 30 or 40 points in a game but still lose. LeBron didn’t care if he only scored three points in a game as long as they won. Don’t sell yourself nor those team short

Yes. Part of the reason why lebron has been blown out so many times in the finals is because of the style of play he has to play in to be successful.

It drives me crazy with the "x" player is selfless or selfish narratives. Players play their game and you only get called selfless when your team wins even when you arent the most aggressive. Kevin Garnett is the most selfless player in the modern history of basketball but nobody talks about it because he isnt known as a "winner". Imagine draymond with anthony davis' talent. KG literally only cared about winning and would do anything to win but the label of "selfless"is a luxury for superstars with excellent front offices and ownership. The gushing over Curry and Tim Duncan as guys that "get it" bothers me only because they just act like they trust their ownership. Thats all

Steph is more malleable and he can fit around any player. He might not be able to physically carry a team but you can’t deny that he might be the perfect teammate. Nobody picked this Warriors team to make the Finals when the season started. But through Steph and Draymond they brought this team kicking and screaming to a Finals run and that should mean a lot. But LeBron might be the greatest floor raiser in basketball history. The LeBron system in his prime was an automatic deep playoff run. I mean Lebron fit with a wide variety of players of different statutes and still won rings. Probably a lower ceiling when it comes to him facing better overall teams (Celtics, Mavs, Spurs, Warriors).

i don't 100% agree with this, but...1. i appreciate that you also mentioned draymond, bc ppl act like he's not the 2nd-most important player to the warriors' run and 2. that 2022 playoff run was indeed incredible, made me put steph over durant. excellent finals performance against a team that ppl thought could defend him too. i wouldn't argue with anyone who said 2022 was steph's best season from beginning to end.

Not sure Bill is taking into account that Steph having season play off veterans in Draymond and Klay and all these young pleasers is different than Kyrie who he never won anything in 2014 and wiggins who was a rookie or Lonzo Ball and Brandon Ingram

to answer the question in the title: is it easier to build around steph?... yes. lebron is obviously the better player overall and could carry a team like no other.. however, its easier to build around steph because he's the greatest shooter of all time. When you have a ball dominant player such as lebron what do you always hear in the media... lebron needs to be surrounded by shooters. or X player needs to be surrounded by shooters to be more successful... you don't need this with steph....

after 2010, LeBron was never able to organically build a championship team because the media conversation was always around him chasing Jordan. if the public/media wasn’t so obsessed with titles, then this alternate reality that Bill is talking about may have been possible. Steph was never in the conversation to chase Jordan so he was content with building a championship team

Building around Lebron would be easy if anyone would just stick up to Lebron. He constantly chooses these guys that need the ball in their hands like Wade and Kyrie, Westbrook. Kyrie to his credit was able to adjust better than the others. Lebron needs a great shooting guard with a strong defensive bigs and one versatile wing man. Fill in with bench shooters. This would allow Lebron to be a true facilitator which is his dream.

Stephen Curry by far. Players get better when they play with Curry. He’s unselfish & he’s a better leader. He doesn’t dominate the ball, he sets screens. Similar to Duncan leadership wise

It's easy to say that Cavs shouldn't rode it out with Wiggins and assets before K. Love now. Let's be honest though, if Kyrie and Love didn't get hurt that Cavs team would've had 2 championships prior to that trash of a move KD did going to GS.

If you're going for 'fuck it, I want as many titles as I can get in a 5 year window' the answer is obviously building around LeBron. He's the better player without question. The biggest downside is, LeBron isn't patient enough to wait for draft picks to develop. So when he leaves after five years, your team is boned for a minimum of three years because you had to hollow out your assets to get guys LeBron wants to play with. Curry basically wins the 'ten year window with an emphasis on development' conversation by default. But the downside to that is if the organization that drafts him is trash, then you don't win any titles with Curry; and we're not having any of the 'where does Curry rank in the top 15 all-time' conversations. So yeah, more organizations would probably prefer to build around Curry because he's a superstar that will be there for the long term and doesn't ask the organization to deviate from whatever their plan is. Still, from a purely 'I'm trying to win titles' standpoint, the scoreboard says it's easier to build around LeBron

LeBron is easier to build around. He's a matchup nightmare because he's stronger than most players, he is one of the best passers ever, and especially in his prime, he could actually guard people. Steph is amazing but his defense has always been poor even though he's never really asked to guard top players. Klay, Draymond, and Iggy would take the top 3 guys on the other team usually. Steph needs constant motion as well. With LeBron, you can plug in almost anyone and he'll make it work so he's by far a much easier player to build around. If I had to pick someone else to build around, it wouldn't be Steph. It'd be someone like Jokic who again, is a matchup nightmare and he can take pretty much any group of guys and still play well or elevate them. Steph tends to thrive generally when his team is already playing well, which is not a knock on him at all but it is something that needs to be considered when you're BUILDING at a team.
