ok so I speak both english and arabic as my native mother tongues. Through all the videos I have seen from Koreans teaching how to pronounce these (hard korean letters that don't exist in english language) I realized that yes they do not exist in the english language BUT they do exist in the Arabic language! and are some of the letter that english speakers struggle to learn. hi ! i’ve been learning for a long time now and some things that helped ME when learning how to REMEMBER the consonants! “ㅂ” looks like a bucket and it has that “b” or even a “p” sound! “ㅈ” almost looks like a pair of jeans! also sounds like a “j” or “t” sound! “ㄷ” looks like an open door, also has the “d” sound. ”ㄱ“ this one kind of looks like a gun in a way ahah, it as-well has the “g” sound! “ㅅ” looks like a ski ramp or hill and has the “s” sound. “ㅁ” looks like a mouth or an open mouth, it has the “m” sound. “ㄴ” this one is kind of funny, what does it remind you of? to me it looks like a nose haha. so think of it as maybe a nose or anything different! this has the “n” sound. “ㄹ” this one i couldnt think much of! i think of it as a snake even tho it’s pronounced in between “l” and “r”. let me know what helps you remember that one! “ㅎ” this one looks like a hat! and has the “h” sound. “ㅋ” this one looks like a key! this has the “k” sound. “ㅌ” this one looks like a sideways “table”! this has the “t” sound. “ㅊ” this one looks like a child haha. this has the “ch” sound! and lastly.. “ㅍ” this looks like pillars! this has the “p” sound. i hope this helped and if i forgot any let me know and i will help! thank you for taking your time to read this for help/tips! if you read this put a “🔥” because you are doing great !!

i dunno if it helps anyone but i like to think that in korean the focus of each syllable is on the vowels rather than the consonants, so you annunciate the consonants less and focus on the vowels. in korean the vowels are the main sound, with consonants in between; in comparison to english where it’s more consonant heavy with vowels in between~

so my sister just started learning korean(i taught her some words and phrases before but that was it) and even though you said we shouldn't use romanization she knew if she wrote the letters down without any kind of romanization she'd mix them up, so she created this really weird system where she writes a bunch of sounds and blends them together into one sound, lemme show you what i mean: 가-kgᴿah(i still have no idea why the "ᴿ" makes the sound softer) 자-chjˢᴿah 나-nᴰah 까-kgah 하-hᴿah 라-dlah and because I'm her 선배님 she made me review her pronunciation and it actually works for some reason! so anyway your course has been super helpful to her, and I'm jealous because 𝒃𝒂𝒄𝒌 𝒊𝒏 𝒎𝒚 𝒅𝒂𝒚... (insert old person rant here about how this course didn't exist and how we had to memorize so many types of syllable blocks bcz billy overcomplicated them)

OK, the first one, it's like a K but not a K, it's like a G but not a G, get it? second one, it's like an N but not an N. moving on, this 3rd one is like a T but not really, it's close to a D, but neither. OK, the 4th one, neither an L or an N, but in between, but you have to put your tongue like saying a D, but don't say a D, say an L sound instead, Got it? Me: Uhmm...OK...should I continue? and I thought I could pick up some basic Korean since I watch way too much K-drama. Just kidding! I just came across your series. Thank you for giving me a chance to learn a new language! I agree totally about how romanization is bad. One of the languages I grew up with have a couple of extra letters added to the "english latin" alphabet. Those letters are crucial to pronounciation. Whenever I see them translated to "english-latin-script" they never come out right. Sometimes this replacement of letters make the whole word, and sentence, incomprehensible. And thank you for the dog/log - that helped!

If my parents walked in on me trying to differentiate the difference of “Sa“ and ”사“ they’d think I’d gone mad 😭

I've been working on memorizing a little bit every night. Tonight I worked on the syllables 라, 마, 바 and 사, but My pronunciation sounds like I'm saying "Llama pasta" 🤣😭

Quick question why do some of the consonants change slightly when put with a vowel? Do we have to draw it that way for it to be proper or could it stay the in the "base" form?

It's just so it looks "nice" inside of those syllable blocks. Their shape can change a bit depending on how it fits into one of those blocks, and also depending on the font.

Could you please explain why the consonant changes shape when added to a vowel on some but not others?
@GoBillyKorean

It's just to make it fit within a "block" shape - you'll have to adjust them to fit within their shape so the entire syllable is kind of a block. That means sometimes they'll be squished or pulled a bit. But you'll get the hang of that after seeing it a lot - you don't have to go out of your way to practice it. Just make them fit into "blocks" the best you can, and it'll definitely be legible.

Ok TYSM. I was sooo confused lol Would you be able to mention that in your lessons please? A few of my friends watching asked the same thing lol And thanks so much for doing these lessons. I tried an app and for the past couple months I was struggling to get it and in only 5 videos of yours I'm understanding so much. You're awesome

@@officermeyer5733 It's also okay if you don't make it into a nice block from the very beginning - you'll get better at that with practice :-) Most important is to just be able to read it yourself.
