Billy Joel “Only The Good Die Young" from Old Grey Whistle Test
Listen to Billy Joel: billyjoel.lnk.to/listenYD
Shortly after Billy Joel earned his first U.K. Top 40 hit with “Just The Way You Are,” he and his band travelled to England for an electrifying performance recorded for the hit BBC series The Old Grey Whistle Test. Ahead of his first headlining show in the country, Billy performed all the hits from The Stranger plus additional classics from his repertoire.

Lyrics:
Come out Virginia, don't let 'em wait
You Catholic girls start much too late
Aw but sooner or later it comes down to faith
Oh I might as well be the one
Well, they showed you a statue, told you to pray
They built you a temple and locked you away
Aw, but they never told you the price that you pay
For things that you might have done
Only the good die young
That's what I said
Only the good die young
Only the good die young
You might have heard I run with a dangerous crowd
We ain't too pretty we ain't too proud
We might be laughing a bit too loud
Aw but that never hurt no one
So come on Virginia show me a sign
Send up a signal and I'll throw you the line
The stained-glass curtain you're hiding behind
Never let's in the sun
Darlin' only the good die young
Woah
I tell ya
Only the good die young
Only the good die young
You got a nice white dress and a party on your confirmation
You got a brand new soul
Mmm, and a cross of gold
But Virginia they didn't give you quite enough information
You didn't count on me
When you were counting on your rosary
(Oh woah woah)
They say there's a heaven for those who will wait
Some say it's better but I say it ain't
I'd rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints
The sinners are much more fun
You know that only the good die young
I tell ya
Only the good die young
Only the good die young
Well your mother told you all that I could give you was a reputation
Aw she never cared for me
But did she ever say a prayer for me? oh woah woah
Come out come out come out Virginia don't let 'em wait
You Catholic girls start much too late
Oh sooner or later it comes down to faith
Oh I might as well be the one
You know that only the good die young
I'm telling you baby
You know that only the good die young
Only the good die young
Only the good
Only the good die young

@@lisalee2885 Ha, I was born in Nassau County but I’m from Queens. 😃 Catholics on both sides for me too, though I’m Dominican/Irish. But yeah, I can so relate to these lyrics. Billy doesn’t get the credit he deserves, which is saying a lot considering how much praise he actually gets. His writing is so down to earth.

So let me share a story about this song. Thirty years ago, a close friend passed away from Melanoma skin cancer he was only 30. He requested for this song to be played at his funeral, (Only the good die young) which we did. Fast forward to 2023 and his wife suddenly passed away. A week after her funeral my friends and I were helping going through her house and try to organize her belongings. At the end of the day, we said our goodbyes after talking about all the good times. As I left to return home and started my truck this song immediately came on the radio. Out of all the songs that could have been playing at that moment this song appeared. Coincidence? I will let you decide.

I was a young skater in Santa Maria, RS, Brazil. (circa 1998). Tired of wallride in the late afternoon, a friend shows up with an aiwa discman and says, listen to this. Punk-O-Rama Vol.2. After listening song #4 I said: Me- "What band is this?" Friend- "I don't know" Me - "Do you have the CD cover?" Friend - "Yes, at home" Me - "#4 is really good" My poor English, but I had and still have a good ear for good music. #4 didn't sound punk to me. After checking the cd cover, it was there -> Written by: Billy Joel Here I am, a proud Billy Joel fan. And now I know (or think) something about your lyrics. Thank you Billy.

It really saddens me when I look around at today’s music and can’t find a single musician with an ounce of the musical integrity and talent that Billy held in just one finger. I hate saying it, but rock stars are truly dead. They’re buried six feet deep, right next to good music...

Dan Nonnemacher kid rock and shine down are awful. Like objectively awful. Neither are even close to being on par with Billy Joel.

Check out Jack Anenoff. His group is “bleachers”. Was formally with “fun”. He writes a lot of Songs for different artists. He is the closest thing we have to a billy Joel today. But let’s face it, very few...if any, are close to on par with billy.

@@Caksman1027 Great observation (Jack Antonoff, I think, btw). I also think Nate Ruess of Fun has real commitment when he writes and sings, he too is a truth-teller. In fact, listen to this one song and let me know what ya think kzfaq.info/get/bejne/apyeZLqE2sfcf6c.html. I wasn't a big Billy Joel fan--simply into different music. I went with a few friends to see him just one time around 1980 or so in Fort Lauderdale. I'll never forget that performance simply because I saw a man who gave it his all, who left everything in the building to put on a great show, how embodied total commitment to his fans. Who totally walked the walk that night. I've seen Bowie, Stones, etc.... I can't say that anyone shown that particular quality more than Billy though...Tori Amos comes close and is also an amazing keyboard player. The Grateful Dead also connected with their fans in a very authentic and spiritual way, though they were far more laid back and it was more of a vibe thing than a direct human connection.

Romans 10 8 But what does it say? "The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart" (that is, the word of faith which we preach) 9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 11 For the Scripture says, "Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame." 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him. 13 For "whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved..

Don’t you love the ending when they run the credits and write “BBC COLOUR(c) BBC MCMLXXVIII” meaning 1978? Do they still write years like that on more modern TV and film productions? Gosh, I haven’t seen that in years. I remember as a kid growing up having to take a minute to add up all those symbols to figure out the number.

I didn’t see this 1978 show when OGWT was on British TV…but I *did*, firmly and for life, catch Billy and his 1984 band recorded live at Wembley in June of that year. Wore the video out. Has that show been kept/restored? Need to go look. And this OGWT, “Only the Good Die Young” with Liberty on brushes! 👏👏👏👏
