Lyrics:
Come out Virginia, don't let me me wait
You Catholic girls start much too late
But sooner or later it comes down to fate
I might as well be the one
They showed you a statue and told you to pray
They built you a temple and locked you away
But they never told you the price that you pay
For things that you might have done...
Only the good die young
You might have heard I run with a dangerous crowd
We ain't too pretty, we ain't too proud
We might be laughing a bit too loud
But that never hurt no one
Come on Virginia show me a sign
Send up a signal I'll throw you the line
The stained-glass curtain you're hiding behind
Never lets in the sun
Darling, only the good die young

That was one of the greatest lines ever written, I'd rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints... I was a catholic school girl in high school when this song came out. I listened to it every day and my mom loved it too! I bought Billy Joel's album The Stranger and all of his other albums. He is such a talent and his music still moves me ro this day

This has been my motto for years and although, yes, I had "heard" the song a time or two in my 32 years of life, I had never really heard heard Billy Joel until a few weeks ago. I was immediately angry at the uncles that raised me on classic rock and roll. Never had they played me Billy Joel while explaining to me why he was one of the greats. Possibly even the GOAT. Needless to say, I've had my Billy Joel playlist on repeat for a month and a half. Lol.

Izzy Wizzy Sorry I went to grade school all Nun teachers. IT was crazy we had to go to Church 1 on week. BUY them time 8th grade the boys went crazy a girl looked like Steavie Nicks from Fleetwood Mac. We were 70s kids, crazy we were going to concerts at 12 years old. Us kids were nuts drinking beer at 12 years old. That girl looked like Steavie Nicks, turned out to be IRISH like me. It sucks most people think all IRISH are drunks. I admit us IRISH are Different born with RED HAIR & Freckles. Us IRISH need to be careful in the Sun our skin burns easily. IRISH GIRLS are just like us guys they beat u up. Being IRISH isnt fun I became a big Beer Drinking. Went to lots of 70s concerts & Football games. IRISH GIRLS are fun they like to drink to drink like us guys.

@@DoyleHargraves I meant nothing against your MIL. I'm just highlighting that Joel's "message" throughout the entire song is for people to ignore God, get drunk, fornicate, do drugs and otherwise just kick up your heels and have a "good time," b/c if you don't (i.e., like your MIL), you'll either die literally (while still "young"); or "die" from a lack of (so-called) "fun" in your life. The philosophy seems to have worked out real well so far for Joel, anyway. 🙂/s It's up to you (and whoever else listens to his music) to discern whether they think he is dispensing wise, true advice; or not. 😎
