Hi, just a quick opinion based on the video thumbnail, I'm in the opinion that the tension in the arm should be bigger than the total weight of the body, in this case 214pounds (which is equal to 162 pounds / cos 41). In another word, instead of of your weight resolving into 2 forces, I chose the assumption of arm tension force that is the one resolving into 2 forces, in which one of them is the weight of your body (162). I checked geek climbing video, he didnt give out this information though, so I would be interested to know the answer to this ....I studied civil engineering, so all these fundamental are rusty too, so it's a wild guess too.
@Huange._.
@Huange._. 4 ай бұрын
@@Slime_on_a_rock It's not wrong to say that the internal forces in the arm are greater than your bodyweight, but at the point of contact between the hand and the bar, there should be a vertical force equal to your bodyweight. Otherwise, your body will experience a non-zero acceleration.

I really like maths and physics, especially physics, I've always wondered how everything works in these calisthenics moves, and while I do know some basic physics, I couldn't do all these calculations by myself. It's really interesting to see everything in detail, I think it's crazy just how much force our muscles can generate and how resistant they are. Nice work, definitely gained a sub, it would be awesome if you could analyze the biomechanics of other calisthenics exercises

Enjoyable video man Idk how the math changes, but the OH Press weight that was found seems to be closer to a reasonable Bench Press target for the Full Planche (1.75xBW). Based off personal anecdotes within training. OHP about 1.1 or 1.2xBW for 3-5s hold.
@Huange._.
@Huange._. 6 ай бұрын
Yup, I made 3 attempts to estimate the tension in the front delt in the planche. The first attempt yielded 850 lbs, the second didn't work at all, and the third yielded 420 lbs. So most likely, the actual answer is somewhere between the first and second, which would match your personal anecdotes! And thank you!

You sir just earn a new follower from France 🇫🇷 Like you when working the front lever, I feel a lot of tension in my midback. Never seen any calisthenics athlete mentioning it anywhere. It was frustrating not to know why !! Thanks a lot man and congrats, you are contributing to the community 💪 PS: to decrease the stress in the midback (I’m assuming the lats), it would help to develop rear delts ?
@Huange._.
@Huange._. 6 ай бұрын
yes it was a super cool realization to me as well! I don't think the lats contribute very much to the stress on the mid back that I was talking about in the video. I think it has more to do with the traps and rhomboids. As for how I'd decrease it, I'd probably work on exercises like wide row variations and reverse flys. And I guess by training the rear delts we are also training the mid-back, so yes - long story short 😅
@danielcoloma232
@danielcoloma232 6 ай бұрын
@@Huange._. ok so I tried my theory based on your information. In my warm up, I insisted on rotator cuffs and it improved a lot the pain I had in my last training session (2 days ago)! My mid back was less stressed, probably because I was finally activating all the muscles of the shoulders. I think I’m going to continue this path of strengthening my weak shoulders. Let me know if you try it and please give me some feedbacks about your midback pain as well🙏 Take care man 💪
@Huange._.
@Huange._. 6 ай бұрын
@@danielcoloma232 Great to hear! Rotator cuff exercises are good in my opinion. Not much to say about my pain besides that it hurts in high intensity attempts. So I just do lower intensity skill work and add some retraction work (ie. reverse flys or rows)
@antw5130
@antw5130 6 ай бұрын
Wow Jimmy great job. Your work is very convincing and thorough given what you had at your disposal. I found myself thinking a lot about these movements in a way that I have never before, especially the axial forces to counteract the horizontal components of the tangential forces and the calculation of the moments through the insertions along the limbs. I just about died on the planche discussion lol 😆. I may be misunderstanding, but since you suggested that the bicep contributes to shoulder extension due to its connection at the scapula and you included that in your revised planche calculation, could you have done the same for the hspu calculation and found a value that is less than the deltoid force in the planche?
@Huange._.
@Huange._. 6 ай бұрын
I'm glad you found it interesting Tony! Yes, I also died in the planche discussion, but in a different way :) As for your question about the HSPU, this is actually something I thought about too! The reason why we can't assume that the bicep assists in shoulder flexion during a HSPU is that the biceps and triceps are antagonists. Basically, since the HSPU involves the triceps, that means the biceps have to be deactivated or else they'll interfere with the elbow extension aspect of the movement. As a result, the front delts can be assumed as the only agonist of shoulder flexion in the HSPU! This is unlike the front lever/pull-up, where I neglected the rear delts and teres major muscles. The rear delt and teres major contribute to both the pull-up and the front lever, unlike the bicep which contributes only to the planche. So by ignoring the rear delts and teres major in both calculations, I end up getting a similar amount of error in them. This allows the "how much weight do I need to add to a pull-up to get the same tension in the lat as the front lever calculation" to still be pretty accurate.

Ahh, biomechanics and human exercise physiology. I passed with A and B+ 🙏🏾 . 😂 I don't miss it whatever. Great explain of the front lever. You did your research very well 👍🏽 Not a lot of people know that tendons like to stay in a relatively fixed position. In my experience with full and assisted front lever to some extent, not alot of scap retraction or depression can happen. Very rare cases also do the tendons and inflammation can happen in that position.

Thank you! I don't think I'll miss this either! And I agree that the scapula don't have much range of motion in the front lever! Also, the main reason I included the elbow calculations is because I've gotten golfer's elbow from front lever before.

Yo bro, great video, keep up the good work, I have 2 questions related to the topic, how does extra weight on my upper body (for example pecs, delts, traps muscle mass) affect these skills, does it make them easier or harder? Second question is similar, how does the mass on my arms affect these skills (biceps, triceps muscle mass), if we consider that the extra muscle mass doesn't make me any stronger in both of these cases.
@Huange._.
@Huange._. 6 ай бұрын
Assuming it doesn't make you any stronger, extra upper body mass will shift your center of mass closer to your upper body, which is generally helpful. On the flip side, it will also increase your total weight which will make it harder. As for the arms, it could help with the front lever a bit since if we look at a free body diagram of the arm, the weight of the arm acts as a distributed load along the length of the arm, which produces a moment that assists in extending the shoulder. I actually ignored the weight of the arm in my analysis which I probably shouldn't have done lol.

Why people dont mention triceps when talking about front lever or more advanced variations ? Isn't it important as a planche bicep ?
@Huange._.

good question. in the front lever the arm is slightly internally rotated, which loads the medial elbow a bit more intensely than the triceps in my opinion. So I ignored the triceps, even though they are also working in this exercise. They aren’t as important as the biceps due to this and also the fact that the biceps can assist with shoulder flexion while the triceps can’t assist with shoulder extension.

what about triceps on front lever? you ignored it as well nonetheless very entertaining!
@Huange._.
@Huange._. 5 ай бұрын
yes I mistakenly ignored it, but I mentioned that I probably overestimated the role of the lats in the front lever, so we can attribute some of that to the triceps

u did pretty bad mistake at the beggin, in every exercise that use 2 limbs, when you do it with one limb the weight doesnt split in half, you can check it yourself, if your max bench is 200 try doing dumbbell press with 2 100 ponds dumbbells, youll see the diffrence
