Super happy to see you back! Was wondering what was going on, because you never know... Glad to hear that you'll be doing a wider variety of stuff, too. I loved your videos on the mechatronic eyes, and seeing other projects done with your style gives us more examples of how various stuff can be integrated into our own projects. I'm also glad to hear that you'll be including more of the failures into your videos, as I find I learn much more from them than from videos which only feature successes. It's often super helpful to illustrate the gotchas so we know to watch out for that sort of thing, ourselves.

Great to see you back. I'm right there with you on delays in releasing videos because of perfectionism. My currnet project I've been working on for over a year. And that's why I havn't released a video in 8 months. Anyway. Glad you're back!

Holy shit I was waiting for this day There's no other project I've been able to find that could do this in a way I found satisfactory. The one with those hydraulic muscles just barely seems to work and it lacks the dexterity this has. Thank you for coming back.

Reflow ovens are so over in the maker community. People moved over to hot plates. Fast, cheap, good quality, easy to use. Even without stencils. So go for surface mounts - people are totally ok with them nowadays. That surface mount phobia thing is history. Oh, and I'm glad you're back!

As long as the pitch isn't too small (or BGA) it is actually not that hard to solder SMD components, like the servo IC's you mentioned. I would recommend to go the surface mount way instead of using clunky adapters. Great to see some progress. Thanks for the update!

3:42 LUV THE CONTENT, as an artist/designer i found out that deep purple is the nicest color for that, and when the bronze/golden metal of the circuit gets exposed, its like BAM! pure magic! then using black sub boards(small addon ones) will bring elegance to it all. so theres my humble yet qualified(Master of Arts) suggestion.

On the topic of surface mount, you should look into drag-soldering. You get a glob of hot solder on an iron tip. It's for heat transfer. You then melt the tinned legs and tinned pads together. It's both easy and hard. Just remember to check for bridges. Your camera can make a really good microscope.

Just a tip, SMDs with side leads don't need reflow oven. If you have many pins it's a bit time consuming perhaps, but with the right technique it gets super easy. Actually I usually go for SMDs only in my projects and avoid through-hole components unless necessary (e.g. some power ICs).

Hi Will! It's great to see you back and be sure that I for one am always as interested to see the "failures" as the success. The later never comes without the former! To maybe help you on a few of your pain points from this video: 1. For desoldering, consider using liquid flux and wick rather than those sucker things, it will make your life 100 times easier. 2. Don't be affraid to hand solder SMD components. With quality solder, flux and a little practice, it really isn't too hard. 3. Consider LCSC for browing and sourcing components, they're a sister company to JLCPCB but keep a much wider stock with a better search interface. Good luck this year!

Revision is the bane and lifesaver of innovation. I have seen and used a " trick " for lowering wire count from servos. You already send power to the servo, you just need the difference between power and ground for the feedback so you can have a second connector from the distribution where power and signals go to the servos, power for the " Position sensors " from the board. The catch is all ground has to be ground for the entire system anyways so you could use conductive materials ( think Car Body ) for that and only one wire for power ( which is not likely in the prototype stage ). To sum up, 4 wires to/from the servo and 2 wires for powering the sensor ( resistor in place for position sensing the servo ). At the servo, 4 wires, power, PWM, to/from the wiper of the position sensor and ground. The wiper will be 3 contacts, the 2 for the distribution board and 1 needed to go back to the servo. This is a very interesting build and you can also change the shape of the PCBs to be a better fit in your design instead of your design to fit the PCB.

I've soldered surface mount parts with a hotplate and bismuth solder. The hotplate was intended to preheat PCBs before soldering, but was a good bit cheaper than a reflow oven. Bismuth solder has a very low melting point, so it is easy to work with.

Great to see you back! These aren't failures, they're learning opportunities on a truly impressive project. Well done and thanks for sharing!

I know the jump to custom PCBs is intimidating and then going to surface mounted is as well- but it is well worth it. You can pick up a $30-40 reflow heat gun and get everything you need onto a single board with a small footprint and minimal wiring. Good to see the progress and thought process behind all of this. My last job involved designing and assembling a few dozen surface mount boards for custom devices, and I have always had an interest in biomimetics. Welcome back! I discovered the joy of PCB design as well a few months ago. Such freedom, and incredibly cheap even with SMD service (I also used JLCPCB). But as others have said, those sop-16 chips you were looking at should be easy enough to solder yourself if you have to buy them from a different supplier. You could probably even do it with a soldering iron since the pins are exposed.

Great to see you back! Don't be scared of SMD components. They are pretty easy to to solder and you don't need anything special to be soldered. The iron you have is all you need.
