Thanks so much for watching - I wonder if anyone else had the same experience of not realising there were different types of the bird of paradise? I hope I'm not alone here!

I started a bird of paradise from seed. Its was black with a fuzzy orange top. I had my plant for 35 years and at one time it had 13 flowers on it at once. It made the local paper. I live in Ontario Canada, It was an indoor plant. I transplanted it and the massive roots were amazing. I had to use an exacto knife it cut the pot and had to have my son to help me pull it out. I love it . I no longer have it. I was offered 600.00 from our local flower shop but I babied this plant from the beginning.

Currently on a rescue mission for 8 of these (averaging 12 foot high). I am so fortunate to have the space to accommodate and try to revive them after a film set used and abandoned them. Thank you for your tips!

Outstanding review I have now have 2 because I separated and repotted now they are producing new leaves they are outside in very bright indirect sunlight they are fertilized when ever I water they are amazing indoor plants that make a dramatic impact thank you

I’ve always liked tropicals but my apartment lighting and temperature just wasn’t suited for these awesome plants; I thought my patio and front porch were too hot. But I found out they Love my northeast exposure . They get great morning sun,and our humidity does all the work for me. My Reginae enjoys a prominent spot at my front door in a 2 ft tall urn that displays it perfectly. Mine are only 1 ft tall , but are growing perfectly green leaves. My Alocasias and philodendrons are also thriving in my outdoor space. I Finally found the right areas to enjoy my tropicals👍🏻

I do self watering pot with 1/2 palm tree soil and 1/2 perlite. Keeps the soil constantly moist but not saturated.

I just bought a bop plant for 150 pesos. Im so excited.

Also for the infestation or pests I use Diatomaceous Earth. It a safe for grade powder that you can sprinkle on the substrates so it incorporates as you water or mix with water itself out causes absolutely no harm to anything. It's common to use to thicken gravy actually, hope to help! 💚👍🏻🍃🌿🌱

saw this on my recommended bc i recently went on an indoor plant binge at ikea, costco and my local popular plant nursery and bought a bunch for my studio incl. a cheaper baby sized BOP haha. I'm really nervous and scared of pests being in the soil and me not realizing, do you find pests are very common on houseplants?? I dont see any currently on them. i also dont plan on using organic compost as 'fertilizer' because my studio space gets flies and fruit flies and i dont want them to entice the flying bugs.

Hi thanks for the tips. I just recently purchased a bop and I had a few questions I’m hoping you can answer. I live in a small studio apartment with three large windows that face SW. I’m stuck because I’d like to leave the plant there however due to the draft and ac vents pointing directly at the windows, I figured it wouldn’t be a great spot at least through winter. Additionally I’ve noticed the leaves curling inwards. Since then I’ve bought a full spectrum grow light and humidifier. My question is with the supplemented light, should I move the plant away from the window given the circumstances? I ask because i feel like it would be missing some good sun here and there and not sure if a grow light would be sufficient enough through winter. Also, during the spring and summer should I continue to use the grow light in conjunction with natural sunlight? Thank you I’m advance!

That was really helpful! I'm glad I found this video before I went out and bought one as I was really wondering what the difference is between the Nicolai and Reginae. I also have a really sunny livingroom window that faces East, where all my other plants have died in that position, so I think the only thing that will live there will be a Strelitzia. I'll definitely get a Nicolai now and will try to hunt one down at Flower Power on the weekend. Your one looks beautiful, I hope mine will look the same :)

Mealy bugs are a problem. I usually only see a few but they love new leaves and hide in the creases where new unfurled leaves come out. I currently have two outside and need to bring them in. But I am shocked that they have been able to with stand temps as low as 48 degrees F.

I was gifted some red bird of paradise seeds and two have germinated, but I live in the desert & it’s November right now and was was hoping you could give me advice on keeping them alive and growing and what temperature and how soon should I use a grow light until spring time? Help

Lovely video, thank you! I have a question: can you prune the roots of a strelizia? Like taking it out of the pot, cutting/sewing 1/3 of the bottom and put it back with some new soil? I have seen videos about that but not about the strelizia. And mine are my babies, so i dont have the guts. But there is no soil left and the space is limited. I actually have 4 different types of strelizia. None of them are the Nicolai. A 2 meter tall double one I placed in a 40L bucket as a couldn't find a pot big enough. I think it's about 10 years old. Reginae. And i bought 3 types of seeds on the table mountain kirstenbosch botanical garden in Cape Town. It took me 4 years to create little plants. Now one of them is 12 years old and flowers for the second time (you need some patience here in the Netherlands. Our climate is different) However end of spring (as soon as it won't freeze anymore) I put them in the garden (half shadow( and take them back in when it's 10 degrees outside (half autumn). When they are indoors (18-19 degrees Celsius) they think it's spring and flower indoors!! That's way better!! And was the best trick I've read somewhere I actually never had bugs. Perhaps because I put them outside for months. There must be some ladybugs or other natural "predators" Perhaps I don't notice as all they other tropical plants (plumeria/frangipani, hibiscus and cordyline) are an absolute pain in the ass over here to grow inside. Every night there is a big mite party on another leave. Like they're club hopping. I can't wait till i can take them outside again in my tiny tropical oasis (yes, in the freezing Netherlands...) Why is it you always like plants that are not local? Tulips and daffodils grow like weed and i dont even look up when I see them 😂 I hope you (or someone else) can help me grow some "root pruning balls" 🙏🏻

Can the plant survive without direct light? I have a bright room but I’d like to put the plant next to the window, as it’s difficult to put in front of the window.

I’m still unsure which one to get. My mind was set on getting the reginae (I believed it is a narrow long plant). Now after watching this, nicolai sounds like the one. Should I go get both then?

I'm in England, in the spring to summer I was watering religiously every 2 weeks and feeding (half recommended dose) now it's currently late October I haven't watered for 3 weeks, my question is how often should I now water? I generally water until its coming out from bottom and i don't let it sit in water. Cheers great vid btw.

I am not sure why by my Nicolai plant isn’t doing so well at all. I am not sure if I underwater it or overwater it since the leaves are browning and splitting none stop. Also the leaves seem to be sticky. I did move it to my sunroom since it gets sun all day long but it’s also extremely hot on there so I put a humidifier in it as well. Hopefully it get back to normal. Ps I thought you can’t cut the edges of the leaves because that could possibly kill the plant? Idk that’s what I heard.

Hi I just purchased a BOP and I also repotted, however today I noticed that my leaves are starting to curl/cup a bit. Great video! Thanks! I live in the north of Ukraine in an apartment without the opportunity to take the plant out in the summer. Although my windows are southern, but in our region daylight from November to February 6-8 hours. Plants have additional lighting, but still, some do not survive the winter and die. It used to happen that I watered excessively. Now I'm drying up more, but I still have little success. The other day I bought such a bird in coconut substrate, the roots are whole, not rotten. Do you think it can be transplanted now, James? And do you need to soak or shake the coconut substrate? Do I need to mix new soil with 'pebbles', lechuza ponom? Your answer will help me a lot! At my local Nursery there were 2 versions of Nicholi....they had massive giant white BOPs and smaller ones they called "indoor" Nicholi !!...I know the needs of these beauties wrt light and so wondered if it was simply a younger baby Nicholi?!.....I got 1 because they were super cute and I had Reginae already. I have her outside in high light with a good morning exposure. Can you shed some light on the mystery? is there a new indoor version of Nicholi? Love your videos...thanks again!!

Why cant you tell how often you water the plant? Once a week? Twice a week`?

I never had one, on Monday a shop here has them for sale. Since I have NO space left, I wanted to learn about them. Why, oh why do they have to become monster?! I already have Orchids which demand Serano Ham or at least some KFC...otherwise they would eat ME. And I am skinny AF.

Why not use pesticide? Mealy bugs are very easy to kill, and they don't come back like spider mites. I don't think rubbing alcohol is a good idea, as it destroys the protection layer on the leaves and can do damage to the plants.
