Bird photography is one of the very challenging genre of wildlife photography - especially when photographing birds of prey and other shy birds like crows and magpies.
It's early morning and I am on my way to my photo blind to see if I am lucky to get some nice photos of birds. I have to get there before the sun sets, so the alarm goes off at 5AM!
Join me behind the scenes this awesome day of wildlife photography.

••• WHO I AM •••
My name is Morten Hilmer and I am a professional nature and wildlife photographer. In this series of behind the scenes vlogs I want to share my fascination of nature with you and invite you behind the scene when I am out photographing the fascinating wildlife, the stunning landscapes and the wild nature. I work as a ILCP photographer, and nature conservation is very close to my heart.
For me nature photography is all about sharing the unique experiences and to put awareness to nature conservation. Furthermore my goal is to inspire as many as possible to get out and experience the true beauty of nature.
“I have served in the Danish military special unit, the Sirius Patrol, for two years and that has given me the skills and confidence to operate alone in the arctic regions. I have spent two further years in the northern parts of Greenland meeting the local people and working on photography projects. My driving force is a sense of adventure and my fascination for nature, and my curiosity and empathy for other cultures has led me to many remote regions.”
Read more about my time in the Sirius Dogsled Patrol: www.bbc.com/earth/story/201602...
Beside the many publications my photographs has been awarded in the Wildlife photographer of the year and European Wildlife photographer of the year photo competitions.
In spring 2017 I published my book Silence of the North: shop.mortenhilmer.com/product...
See you out there !
All the best
Morten Hilmer

I have now completely finished watching all the video installments on Morten's channel. And all the comments have it nailed down. This isn't about a guy blathering on about his gear and all of the photo aspects. This is about a story teller telling us about his love of nature, and how he himself goes about getting closer to what he loves. The images are the gravy. With some good b-roll, and including US -- the viewer in everything he's thinking, everything he's seeing, his Danish accent all come together to make it enjoyable to people without cameras or interests in photographing nature. It's like 15 minutes you can be somewhere else in your day, along with this friend of yours from Denmark. He's only just started this channel and I'm sure as the weeks progress, we are in for better everything. By far one of the best SUBs I've undertaken all year. I came here for nature photography -- what I got was a true adventure.

I am absolutely amazed and truly humbled after reading your fantastic compliment. This means so much more to me than you might know. It is so encouraging to hear how I reach you and it makes me so happy that you feel the adventure and my love of nature and most important, that you are enjoying to watch it. I really really hope you will like to follow me on this journey :) All the best wishes from Denmark:)

Absolutely spot on with your comments John. The images, whilst superb, are simply a by-product of the story as far as I am concerned. Love this style of vlogging. Wasn’t too interested in wildlife/nature photography before finding Morten’s channel but now I am totally engrossed. Currently working my way through his playlist and am enjoying every one.

Such great advice, Morten, to give the birds ten to fifteen minutes to get settled there and feel safe. I know how hard that is, but you're so right, that to resist taking photos will ultimately result in more better photos. Thanks for this!

this is what i love about photography.. its like hunting. you have to be dedicated, you need to be at the right place at the right time with consistency. plus no hunting licenses (some would argue the harm of the birds) and its like a slot machine effect. its pretty awesome. i love wildlife photography... not because im out to get an award winning photo, but I, ME... I'M the one that got that buck.. or that water foul.. ect. its like hunting in all the right ways.

Ah, the wonderful aroma of coffee in a blind. Never try and separate a man from his coffee. I take lots of bird pictures and really haven't found 'yard-birds"to be that shy, especially around food. Hummingbirds will almost come to your hand for a treat. Crows, buzzards, turkeys, are a whole other story. And bird pictures from my boat are always a challenge - moving birds and a rocking boat. The magpie shots are wonderful! The local hunters have some deer stands (usually elevated 10-15 feet) that I might use to see what kind of birds I can spot. Thanks for the video and I hope you are making a lot of money from You tube as you truly deserve it.

In England, Scotland and Wales the crows are mainly black, but there are hooded in Ireland. I know when on the wing the crows are really aggressive towards buzzards and I’ve never seen them on the ground with one. The creature that turns into a butterfly is a caterpillar in English. Your passion and commitment for your subject is a wonderful thing to see, and I could never stop learning off your fieldcraft. Morten, What a gift in finding your films this evening! My day started with 25 wild turkeys in my yard, a lovely site, and after that I was looking through some old notes and a short trailer I had made for a nature series of my own, as wilderness has always been the great passion of my life since a little boy….and while online tonight looking for photography blinds, I found your beautiful work. This was just exactly what I needed, your feelings for nature, your emotion, your glee in the moment, as well as your love for wildlife photography, all resonated so much with my own feelings, and your experiences in the blind, especially when you heard the wolves, was thrilling and actually made me quite emotional….I almost felt as though I was there! You’ve captured the perfect mixture of passion, art and story telling (exactly what I had in mind), that can help people to reconnect with nature….our only hope, I feel, in these now very dark and desperate times. Keep fighting the good fight, you’ve greatly touched my soul! Cheers, Greg Douglass (NJ-USA)
