Next time pork shoulder is on sale for cheap, get a big one and go to town! You'll be able to make all kinds of sausage, at a cost far less than the supermarket.

Do you have problems with the meat liquids backing back into the mixer? The grinder isn't a sealed unit.....which concerns me and I'm seeing black mold growing in the mixer. I called Kitchen Aid and all they tell me is to put a towel at the back of the mixer to tilt it a bit to keep the meat juices from flowing back ward.....doesn't seem like a solution and dangerous if we get food poisoning.

I apologize, I do not understand how meat liquids get into the mixer? Where exactly is it entering the mixer to cause the mold so I know what to look for?

@@BobbiJo if you look at the inside back of the grinder you will notice the unit is not sealed where it connects to the mixer. When you remove the grinder and look into the hole where the grinder is inserted you might see mold and sludge growing in there. I think it's a bad design and could lead to people getting sick. I grind chicken thighs meat which probably has a high water content compared to pork or beef.
