That issue was not addressed. Most well installs have the electric cable coming up a plastic conduit on outside of the casing and the cable runs over the top of casing and down. The last Bison kit I installed included a 90 degree conduit fitting that we installed a few inches down on the side of the casing. We used a hole saw to make the hole and then reworked the conduit and cable to go thru this hole/fitting so the top of the casing was clear for the hand pump to sit on. I stuffed a big cloth object ( my jacket) down inside the casing about a foot to keep any tools or other items from falling down in the well, if dropped, while working on the electric access hole.

@@1new-man Have installed Bison and Simple pumps. If arrestors are installed I pull up the electric pump and remove them in the top area where the hand pump will extend down. They will be in the way of lowering the hand pump.

It won't work on a point well, the 3" hand pump cylinder has to be down in water, point wells are 1 1/4" or 2" pipe. You need at least a 4" drilled well for this deep well hand pump.

Only from the drain back hole to the top. Below the hole you drilled will stay full of water. My feeling is in cold weather it is a option to replace the cap at all as insects are the main worry of leaving the cap off.

Static level is more important than total depth. You may have water at 100 ft static.

Most domestic wells are 6.25 ID or less. That looked standard 6.25 or just usually referred to as 6 in well casing.

Its not the well depth that really matters its the static water level from ground level. my well is 325 but my water level is 14 feet from ground level. The well is 325 because of local irrigation for farm and new town water tower with in 1 mile,

As Jerry said, the well depth doesn't matter, it's your static water level. You normally want to be significantly below the static water level for dry seasons and dry spells because the water table changes. You have to know your static level anyway so you know how many sections of pipe with the rod in it to purchase. Once you know your static water level, go a few more sections of pipe past your static level for the reasons I stated above. I plan on getting one here in Virginia. We just purchased 5 acres land with a well. My neighbors well is 475', his metal casing is 37' and his pump is sitting at 378'. Neither one of us know the static water level yet. I'm sure it changes with the rainy season, snow melt and dry spells. I'm in the Shenandoah Valley and we have all kinds of shale and stone here. So drilling a new well just to put in a hand pump wouldn't be feasible. The reason I'm looking at Bison is because they have deep well hand pumps. Since i already knew the depth of my neighbors well and I already have a well on my property, the Bison pumps seem like a good choice. At least a smart choice when the power goes out.

Deep well? my well is 600 feet in Arizona do you have any other options besides a pump. trying to pump water out to see if I have any water that is recharge water to see if I have enough to supply my house with water

Those wires are for the electric pump that is already in the well. He is just adding a hand pump that won't need electricity.

As long as you have the drain back hole drilled at a depth that does not freeze , no worries at -100F.

From my understanding, you want to go deeper because the water is better.

If you're static is that close to the surface, then you can use a much cheaper pitcher pump that doesn't need a pump cylinder down the well. Although pitcher pumps are not sanitary, and should not be used on wells for drinking water

@ Luna X -- That 12 ft. is the STATIC DEPTH ( depth from the top of the Well Casing to the WATER LEVEL ) . They didn't mention the actual depth of the Well , but it could be several hundreds of feet .

No, it installs at a lesser depth. But, if you have a problem with the electric pump at a later date you will have to first remove the entire hand pump system before you can begin to access the electric pump. Otherwise, the electric pump works as usual and does not even know the hand pump is there.

Because when the electricity goes out you still can get water from your well.

I'm looking at a property with 2 wells. I'll definitely go with a manual pump for the second well head as a backup 👍

When the electricity goes out and you have a generator interlock switch on your panel, you can run the well pump if your generator is big enough. We are forecasted to have a big earthquake in the next 50 years (9.0) in the Northwest. The pipes from the well to the house might be broken, so could not use the well pump. If the well is still intact you could hand pump if you have a hand pump. Also recommended where we live to have water stored and purification ability for 2 gallons per person per day for at least a month usage.
