I was about to make a very similar comment; the bead rolled monocoque pieces really separate the mosie from a normal garage build and make it look like more a professional factory built car.

I’ve just finished watching the whole series, having seen an interview on 7spot! Fantastic. The patience and dedication both you and your Dad have is incredible. Not to mention the skills! I think it's great that you're pointing out just how much time your work actually takes. Due to clever editing and time-lapses being so common, it's easy to assume that "putting some bends and welding a bit" could be done in a few minutes. I think, if you continue that bead rolled pattern on the center piece, it'll look less like wings, and more like a crown or pizza slices... which ultimately doesn't matter, as it's going to be covered, just an intermediate fun phase.

I know I am a bit late on my watching this episode but it made the wait worth it... I'm an extremely big fan of this build series and have been looking for a build of a similar nature... As a retired auto body technician and fabricator among my many skills and qualifications in the automotive and racing fields. I can appreciate the true amount of work and dedication that a build of this nature requires... In the future you may be watching a build series where I am doing the same sort of build... Different type of car and different platform but still completely designed and built by hand as the best usually are...

Having done sheet metal work in my younger years, sheet metal which has a plastic coating is to allow machining processes while retaining the surface finish - so the end-product doesn't need to be re-finished, you just peel off the plastic and its original surface finish is preserved. For clarity - the company I worked for made BBQs. The stainless BBQs had a brushed finish. They shipped with about 95% of the plastic still in place - only removed for assembly operations where it would become inaccessible. So, it could be for signs, but likely a sign would be painted. The products we made which would be painted were made of galvanized cold-rolled steel which had no plastic protection layer...because that would be pointless.

I always liked the Cox GTM but ended up with a Davrian. I remember the madness of fitting alu panels on bulkheads, door cards and such....the thing was totally asymmetrical! Mine was a 1970 Mk 4 but they were the same for years...a nice strong design but I have the impression they were thrown together by a bunch of hippies, till late when Tim Duffee bought the firm and they got organised. Still, it's character, innit? The Golden Watercress race car was made symmetrical by a bodyshop but it's the only earlier car which is! Bet that cost Charles Barter a few vanloads of cress..... Nice project! By the way, I had to alter the roof of the Mk4 as my helmet touched when I raced it....I made a subtle double-bubble roof panel which looks great and works well. I made a mould and sold one, I wonder if it'd fit a GTM?

Just a suggestion...instead of drilling hundreds of holes, since you are using thin sheet metal; a hand lever action punch might work better. I always keep one in my toolbox. the kit comes with different sizes of punches work very well.

In my early years I had a Triumph Spitfire MK3 that came with higher flow headers and I installed a low restriction muffler and it sounded glorious but of course it wasn't that fast but it sounded better than any of a dozen faster cars I owned in later years. Even my S2000 didn't come close to sounding as good. In fact, for all the noise it made at high rpms it was annoyingly loud for the amount of horse power it put out. I always imagined how much nicer it might have been with a Honda V6.

Hi Oliver and Dad, I have spent the last two days binge watching from episode 1 to 65 of the build video of Mosquito great work from both of you, a little about me I'm a shipwright by trade but have done many other things etc and set up and ran the workshop for MX5 Parts in Portsmouth UK which is mainly a mail-order business for Mazda MX5, Eunos and Miata parts etc which supply worldwide until I retired 11years ago, have owned a few nice cars e.g. 1962 series 2 Lotus Elite, SE5A Reliant Scimitar, Mazda FD3S RX7 and my Mazda Enuos 1.6 S-Spec.and now drive a little Renault Clio. I can't pick the best sounding engine for me just to many lol. Keep up the great work both of you.

Honestly I would recommend not using aluminum for the back because it's a dissimilar metal and will cause accelerated corrosion. It's much better to use steel and weld it in instead of using pop rivets or other crimp in solutions like rivnuts. For the insulation I would use Kaowool which is a sort of ceramic wool which is used in kilns and forging metal so if it will handle that much heat and not melt I would guess it would work well for some installation where it will be welded in. Now, as far as the best sounding car engine that would be a tossup between a Mazda RX7 and a 1970 Dodge Challenger with glass packs.
@OliverPickard
@OliverPickard Жыл бұрын
we've talked about dissimilar metals in the past and although is can be a problem it can also be dome correctly plus its very difficult to weld a water tight cavity with insulation in the middle. wool type insulation Kao or Rock would have worked best if the removable panels were on the inside but its excellent suggestion thank you.
