You can choose whether to save your outpost or the civilian village here. Saving your outpost gives you more units and so makes the mission much easier. While saving the civilian village makes the civilians loyal to you in the next mission, at the expense of making this mission harder. In this playthrough we save the civilians, meaning we pick the harder route for this mission.
