The Patriotic Alliance is synonymous with its charismatic president Gayton MacKenzie, a larger than life man’s man who possesses no diplomacy filters and takes no prisoners. Critics of the fast growing political party write it off as a one-man show. But as you’ll discover in this interview with PA co-founder Charles Cilliers, that superficial judgement is done at your peril. Cilliers, a journalist and prolific book author who wrote MacKenzie’s life story in 2007, is urbane, mature and articulate. Apart from disputing much of the narrative surrounding last week’s drama in the Joburg Metro, he offers insights into reasons for the party’s stance - based, he says, on fierce independence. This interview is certain to change perceptions. Cilliers spoke to Alec Hogg of BizNews.

So if the PA's choice is to work with any party who will include them in any portfolios even if it's ANC or EFF then so be it. But the DA wants to be bullies and do everything their way. True, but the PA, ASA and FF+ all say the same thing and the DA something different after all four come out the same meeting. I tend to believe three people out of the meeting with the same story, rather than the one that is different. I think it happened three times now... To me it really looks like the DA does not want to do anything if they do not have full control. They act like they big, but they are not. They may be the biggest opposition party, but that still does not make them a big party. The rate they have been struggling in local council elections, I don't think they are going to get more that 15-17% of the vote in 2024. All those votes they think they are going to pick up, is going to ASA, the PA, FF+, and IFP (in KZN) Throw Musi and Rise Mzansi in the mix, and we may just end up with a possible four parties , i.e. three of these and the EFF that all get between 10-15%. Then the DA is in serious trouble, because they have already alienated the PA, just about ASA and getting closer to alienating the FF+. They may even drop below 50% in the WC. AT the other end and ANC/EFF in coalition is far from a reality (unlike what the DA is professing as if it is a done seal) and the ANC may just reach out to all the abovementioned parties if they drop significantly below 50% and close a deal with them. The DA and EFF will then be sidelined and the DA will die like the old NP and the EFF drop to well below 10% in 2028.

@@hansielategan969 You make a point that most people are oblivious to. The ANC can/will win the elections with support of the smaller parties. In GP and KZN they'll definitely need the EFF but maybe not nationally. If they bring on board the PA then they will be okay. I can see them being willing to let go of KZN and GP. It's only the provincial ANC leaders that are going to lose. The IFP is likely taking KZN though, on their own or with ASA/DA. An ANC, GOOD, PA coalition in the WC is not out of question as well.

Charles later goes on to say that want to work with people that have the same vision as them. What is that vision and who are the parties that share that vision? It’s difficult as a smaller party to drive your vision. As an impartial bystander after watching this podcast and that with Helen Zille it occurs to me that the political field in South Africa is see as just a game. The myriad of small paries such as the PA et al are like a bunch of children around a party table all wanting a slice of the party cake at the same time. The myriad parties in South Africa, they have a common enemy namely the ANC who has effectively destroyed South Africa, sundered families of all races, killed many directly and indirectly and caused joblesness never before seen in SA. Surely there must be common ground amongst the many parties to pull together to get rid of the ANC evil and care for the people instead of their own little party politics? Its about time that the petty differences as evidenced in this podcast be set aside in a common goal.

Spot on. I think you're describing politics and state systems world-wide. All governments should be driven by altruism and maximizing quality of life. Yet I think as long as we continue to live under the system of capitalism (where the most optimal outcome is PROFIT and not quality of life), governments will continue to conduct themselves as if they are businesses. And business is ruthless, cutthroat, driven by self-interests, power, and so on. Business is about the bottom line. The problem is dealing with someone you can’t trust. Charles tries his best to come as reasonable and willing to compromise, while at the same time insisting he’s working with all parties but wishes to dethrone ANC but also thinks other parties are not strong enough for them to partner with unless the DA joins in, but at the same time, PA and EFF never got along there’s always been bad blood between them. There’s so many self-contradicting statements in that response. Your position is not clear and elusive and that works in your favor as that is what you desire. Your attempt at clarifying failed spectacularly. You’re a very dishonest party, and I wanted to give you a chance and, until now, give you the benefit of the doubt. You can the stick with the partnership you have with the ruling party because, as you say, that’s your biggest bargaining chip. You’ll get served greatly by that, but you can’t insist you’re trying to help rid this country of corruption, and you clearly are the antithesis of good faith negotiation

Dear Alec Hogg, thank you for providing the platform and facilitating these crucial conversations about the future of our beloved country. Who are the real leaders who will find each other and work out the answers to this puzzle and make it work in the jungle of Real South African Politics? Question/observation: Are we stuck between an intransigent DA leadership and a PA leadership who are on all sides of many fences? It seems that the Helen Zille aka the DA "Fedex" are stuck in their strategic dogma. Simply put, the DA is blowing chance after chance because they cannot connect at a leadership level to the reality of how to deal authentically and humanly with its potential partners. Instead of a "moonshot pact" we have the DA again executing its own "footshot". (With apologies, I couldn't resist). This shows a tragic leadership deficit, a blind spot to their own deficiencies. In a previous Alec Hogg interview, Helen Zille spoke emphatically about their values and strategy. It was impressive from that perspective. Strategy is indeed crucial. So is execution though. It occurred to me then that whilst strategy is a DA strength, the weakness appears to be in working with the very leaders one needs to, for real life execution of that strategy. It sounded good, with one flaw: they can't do it on their own! The reality is, it is not "my way or the highway". Where is the Helen Zille who worked from within to build and hold together the Cape Town coalitions? Now she seems to be calling the shots without even attending the crucial meetings. Is this a time to bask in former glory, to extrapolate past successes in different situations? Toughness is needed. Values and principles are vital. What about flexibility of attitude to get things to work? This seeming arrogance has been expressed by many opposition leaders during the current discourse, some ex DA. Lindiwe Mazibuko, Mmusi Maimane, Herman Mashaba, the list goes on, of disenchanted, alienated ex DA leaders, many now smaller party opposition leaders who won't be pushed around. Is this perhaps a fatal flaw from a DA leadership perspective? It has national repercussions-for 2024 and more. One definition of leadership is simply this: influence. Communicating, working to find the other. Stephen Covey defined it so "Seek first to understand, then to be understood"* Why is it that the DA leadership continues to publicly demonstrate its inability to embrace South Africans of diverse cultures at leadership level? I say culture to deliberately avoid the "r" word. Surely real leaders don't only have strategies, calling the shots from their "Fedex" tower? Don't they have to work in the trenches too? Or is this is a snapshot of a future DA authoritarianism? Hint: South Africans of all backgrounds have had generations of authoritarianism, they are gatvol. For so many of us, the DA is the benchmark for the type of effective government that we need. We see it in Cape Town of course, with gratitude. Surely some magnanimity is needed now? In the ironic words of a former apartheid era leader who shall remain nameless: "The alternative is too ghastly to contemplate". At this moment, day by day, the ANC "revolution" clings to and pursues its centrist/national socialist/marxist policies influenced by its old-and old style-leadership, to the destruction of our society, to whit the economy, education, healthcare, foreign policy, transport, infrastructure, energy, mining, "state owned entities" etc etc. Step up -asseblief! RDO * Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen Covey. Dogmatically, such a book should be compulsory learning for every South African parliamentarian.

DA manage about 17 coalitions in other parts of the country. PA & ASA are new start-ups, haven't competed in national elections, but want equal power in coalitions.
