What a cool bike. I went to unhook a V-brake today on an old bike and didn't notice one strand of the cable was frayed and poking out. That sliver of metal slid under my thumbnail...the pain! I will never be quick when unhooking V-brakes again hah. It sure is fun to give these old bikes some love so they function better than they have in decades.

Glad I came across this video. I have the Gold and black 4500 Alpha I believe it's a 2003. Had since new.

I find 7 and 8 speed drive trains have rather forgiving tolerances, and will still work fine even when pretty worn out. As long as the housings aren't damaged, or super worn they will still work fine. Sometimes I pop the ferules off, and trim maybe 1/2" or so from the end of the housing, and put on a new ferule if worn. That 1/2" is usually where the housings get corroded., and really wears out. I tend to just replace galvanized cables with SS. Cables and housings are some of the most over replaced items. Especially with 7-8 speed stuff, friction, and when your not dealing with high end 10-12 speed stuff that is a lot more sensitive to cables, and housings.

With a new chain , always check for cassette rejection of it , skipping and clunking under heavy load on the smaller cogs .Most instances , cassette and chain swaps done as a pair .

I use a small steel cable and lock on my saddle. Better than nothing.

And I take out the reflectors on the spokes too but I read a lot of trails and stuff as well I've had him come loose and go inside the smokes I don't trust reflectors like that😅😅😅

I am off cycling at the moment as I am about to have surgery for a cyst which means a waiting game to ride again .

I am going to build my neighbour's children some new bicycles for the Spring season this week . They will be free "PHILANTHROPY" ones . I will use decent parts like Altus and Acera standard . They will be placed under a "maintenance agreement" for 12 months .

My custom made wheel lacing stands are tortionally stiffer and more solid than the Park tool ones with extra referencing features which are unique to my design . I have had them for 25 years and they have never missed a beat . My stand can accomodate 14mm BMX axles as well as thru axle mtb variations up to 22mn dianeter .

The faded dork disc is a pain to see in my eyes. I think it would be good if you removed it 😊

Quick releases are the most wonderful thing when you are taking your bike to the trails every day in a rough neighborhood. Leaving a bike on a rack is begging for it to be stolen so in the back seat is a much better option.

My stock is very tidy and well organised now as I need to do an audit for the tax office . With helpers , I did a full inventory stocktake and then computer data entry .

So educate us about the hidden mysteries of quick release wheels. About all I know is make damn sure the release is locked before launch.

The term "sealed bearings" has irked me for a long time. It used to mean cartridge bearings but over time came to mean "a rubber seal on cup/cone assembly".

How do you clamp onto a carbon seatpost when putting it in the bike stand. Is there a certain max clamp pressure you need to be aware of? Thanks
