In 1946, Joan Crawford won an Oscar for Mildred Pierce after leaving her home of nearly 20 years, MGM. In this video I explain the evolution of her persona, her relationship to the studio system, and why her Oscar is a great comeback story.

These BKR videos are very refreshing for a film buff like me. I long ago grew fed up with either extreme: the sensationalist scandal-ridden exposes, and the sentimental glorification of old Hollywood. Instead, these videos take a detailed, mature and measured look while still showing affection for the subject. They're not forever pitting actress against actress, or actor against studio. It's a humane, even-handed, cliche-free and grown up look at a complex business and contextualised against the wider backdrop of the times. Love it.

I was named after Katharine Hepburn, but my parents forgot the ‘A’ in her name after a difficult labor and delivery, and a nurse put an ‘E’ in my name and birth certificate. My sister was named after Brooke Shields. I HATED my name growing up, always wanting to be a ‘Christina’ or ‘Jennifer’- by my, oh my, I’m so grateful my parents named me Katherine. Thanks Momma & Pop! I wouldn’t trade it for ANYTHING in the world. If anyone sees this, do you know or run into many women named Katherine? I’d love to know! Thanks dolls! ✨✨✨🌹🌹🌹

I think part of the reason Joan is still talked about today is her ability to transform and change with the times. I’m sure many women who were around her age would have felt that she was a kindred spirit. She was a flapper, a Depression-era worker and a housewife with big aspirations. And I don’t think she was one to rest on her laurels. Say what you want about her, she put in the work, showed up prepared. And the fact that she was brilliantly talented and uniquely beautiful didn’t hurt either.

One of my favorite actresses of all time. Her flapper/Pre-Code movies, Grand Hotel, the Clark Gable romances, the tough working class strivers, the glamour goddess, The Women, Mildred Pierce, What Ever Happened To Baby Jane... I feel sorry for people who think she's a bad actress and discount her career because of Mommie Dearest. She had great range and fought to stay relevant.
@animalfriend6413
@animalfriend6413 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheSongwritingCat I don't understand that somebody who watched some of her movies would call her a bad actress. Imo the problem is that so many people can't make a difference between the actress and the private person. Does she look good as an abusive mother? - NO. Was she a good and beautiful actress? - YES. The one doesn't need to exclude the other because it's seldom black and white when it comes to real life and real people.

@Luke Pearson Joan was a wonderful actress and businesswoman who had an amazing work ethic. She had so many admirable qualities. Not really just rumors if it’s a firsthand account from her own child. It probably has validity. But everyone is human and deserves to be looked at from a multi-faceted perspective. We tend to make heroes or monsters out of people, and it reduces them to caricatures instead of living, breathing human beings. She wasn’t just a glamorous movie star and she wasn’t just some abusive monstrous person. There were many parts to her, just like with anyone.

I think a more recent example of what happened to Joan Crawford was Sandra Bullock's win for The Blind Side. I see parallels between their careers. Like Crawford, Bullock in 2010 had been an audience favorite for 20 years whose roles/performances really appealed to contemporary women. When she was nominated it seemed weird that that was her first nomination and brought to attention how un appreciated she had been.

Joan Crawford has always been my favorite actress of all time. I was glued to the screen every time on of her movies came on TCM. I think she was my first role model. I just wanted to be like Joan. Between her and Vivien Leigh (mostly the Scarlett version) I constructed my version of what I thought the ideal woman would be and how I wanted to be when I grew up. I wanted to be completely independent in every way, I wanted to bury myself in work, I wanted to pull myself out of poverty, and I wanted power. No matter what anyone says, Joan Crawford is still my hero.

This episode is incredibly well-written. You embodied being "kind" to a woman who defined American Womanhood in its formative years and across some of the most challenging circumstances and obstacles society in general was dealt (depression, Second World War, and the technical limits of early cinema, etc.) This is probably the first account of the career of Joan Crawford I find that does not sensationalize --positively or negatively-- and it shows lucid view of context in explaining her career stages, ultimately having understanding of them and delivering understanding to the younger generations, who, case to point, continue to be quite interested indeed in Joan Crawford, myself included. Actually more interested in her life and work than in most stars of her generation or after. Thank you again and again.... this is good...

Please make a video about Julie Andrews' win for Mary Poppins!!! I love her, but that role is so weird to actually win acting awards.
@teenagefirework1
@teenagefirework1 5 жыл бұрын
At the time, Musicals would really get you an Oscar win regardless the seriousness of a film but I also think people felt bad Julie's role for My Fair Lady was taken away from her and given to Audrey Hepburn instead (Note Audrey wasn't even nominated for My Fair Lady even if the film was extremely successful, winning Oscars and her performance was great).

I do love that delicious schadenfreude that Julie Andrews won an Oscar on a film (not to mention one of the most iconic roles in cinematic history) she was only able to make after being rejected for the part she should've had in the first place :)

Watch EXO 'KO KO BOP' MV on KZfaq To Climax! now that's a shitty thing to say! julie said she kept her Oscar in the attic bc she felt she didn't deserved it and bc she felt they gave it to her out of pitty and that's NOT what happened. Mary poppins is one of the most iconic roles ever and yes it may be childish (she's a nanny for goodness sake) but that makes it even more impactiful, she's like the world's governess.

My great aunt use to babysit me as a child, we watched all these old films whenever we were together. Joan Crawford was one of her favorite actresses, and we watched so many of her films. Next to Mildred Pierce, Sadie McKee is my favorite of Joan’s films. I really wish my great aunt and I could have met Joan to tell her how much her films mean to us...and how her films bonded my great aunt and I.

I love these Best Actress videos! I'd love to see one about one of Glenda Jackson's two wins (1970 and 1973), just cuz I'm a huge fan of hers and find her interesting as someone who largely disregarded the importance of the award despite winning it twice

This is now the 6th video of yours i've watched, and i can't get enough. I'm pretty much binge-watching all your videos. You have a great voice and cadence for narration and don't have the self-congratulating need to put yourself on camera, instead focusing on showing us the relevant clips. Your topics are well-researched, and shows you have a clear love for the material, adding nuance, depth and thoughts on contemporary and current interpretation of the history. Great job!

Her performance was good in Mildred Pierce but her performance was better in Possessed 1947 and she should have won the Oscar for that role! Her Deliverance as a skitzophrenic had never been done before by her and she knocked it out of the ballpark with each scene.

I moved to Israel almost five years ago. When I still lived in NY, I watched Mildred Pierce every time it was on television. I was mesmerized by her performance. I never got tired of watching it over and over again. Sometimes I would notice a certain detail or dialogue that I had missed the previous time that I watched it. So it was fresh for me each time. And if somehow the film is shown on television here in Beersheva, Israel I will watch it over and over again likewise.
