So, in the post credits scene of Black Adam we see a drone fly down and project a live hologram of Viola Davis’s Amanda Waller. You’ll remember her from the Suicide Squad films, both the good one and the bad one. As well as Peacemaker. [clip]
She’s essentially threatening Black Adam that he is not to set foot outside his country of Khandaq or there will be consequences. To which Black Adam says… [clip, no one on this planet can stop me]
And then in walks Superman, more specifically, Henry Cavill’s Superman. We can hear the classic Richard Donner Superman theme. [clip, example.]
Now before we get into Superman and explaining the next phase of the DCEU, we have to talk about the outsizeed role Aanda Waller has now, in this universe. Everyone agreed that Viola Davois was perfect casting, and one of the shining stars of the Suicidd Squad-so it’s great she’s been given a more active role in this universe. Originally, it seemed like she was only in charge of the Suicide squad, the governemnt’s answer to the Justice League.
But now it’s apparent that she is more of a Nick Fury character, assembling heroes into her own team. Task Force X might be the dispensable, black ops team. But the Justice society is the public team, filled with do-gooding heroes like Dr Fate and Iron-I mean Hawkman. Waller also commands a massive task force X black ops facility where superhuimans are kept in cold storage. [show broll of fortress inquistorius in obi wan]. And that’s where we got our super cool cameo form Peacemaker’s Harcourt.
What’s ibntersteding about this is that waller doesn;t seem to have any control over the Justice League. He and bruce wayne have met, and have reached a mutual understanding to stay out of each others way [suicide squad post credits scene]. But the end of justice league made it obvious that bruce wayne was founding this organization in his family’s home, and that he runs this show [a big table, with chairs].
And by the way, I love how the DCEU has just sort of said, screw it, there are lots of other heroes in this universe, and we’re not going to explain their origins.” They’ve basically ruched ahead to where the MCU is now, where new powered people can pop up and we accept it [Titania broll]. Waller has formed her own team of heroes, because she can;t control do-gooders like classic Superman.
And speaking of classic Superman, Cavil is now sporting Supes signature spit-curl as well a new suit that is a deep royal blue. And behind his “S” [clip, it’s not an “S”]
We can see the gold color is no longer desaturated, it really pops. We think this is a visual representation that this Superman's origin story is now complete. And he has officially come into his own as the THE Superman we know and love.
Doug: Origin story? He’s played Superman like three times before this.
That’s right, but, in each of those films Clark was still learning who he was. Let me take just a minute to explain the arc of Henry Cabvill’s superman, then we can talk about Black Adam-and this new superman’s place in the DCEU going forward.
See, in the Snyder movies, Superman was still figuri0ng out who he was meant to be. We saw something similar done in the MCU with the Spider-Man “Home Trilogy.”
That trilogy was one big origin story. Three films showcasing Peter Parker becoming the Spider-Man we know and love. Which I really appreciate. Becoming an iconic superhero such as Spider-Man or Superman takes time. [clip]
Cavill’s first film, Man of Steel, focused on Clark discovering where he came from. Learning about his powers and what responsibility should come with those powers. [clip, with great power comes great responsibility.]
Man of Steel also showed us how pivotal Ma and Pa Kent were to Clark becoming the man he is. [clip]
The next film, Batman v. Superman, was about Clark determining what role he as Superman was supposed to play in society. He alone was strong enough to rule the entire planet with an iron fist.
