Thank you again for the very instructive videos! I didn't see when you caulked the neck area, did you do that before sewing the bird? Or do you caulk the neck through the two holes you made (so caulk is only needed in the base part of the neck?
@ArtofTaxidermy
@ArtofTaxidermy 3 жыл бұрын
I squeezed the caulking under the neck skin from the two areas you saw I injected.

Love your work !! and your tips and tricks! Especially birds of pray. I'm wondering why my wing feather some times get these rinkels when I'm blow drying?(pet dryer) And when mounting wet birds, do I need to keep feathers wet right up before blow drying? I'm not that fast mounter..:-) Thanks. E
@ArtofTaxidermy
@ArtofTaxidermy 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Espen. About the wrinkles .. try cold air, or keep your pet dryer further away from feathers so you create a wide volume blow. Or try some air compressor. For wet method , it will be moist for a long time. You can keep it moist by putting in a bag and fridge it. But not for way too long.

With the needle you are using, are you actually poking the skin into the foam body?
@ArtofTaxidermy
@ArtofTaxidermy 2 жыл бұрын
pretty much.... pushing the skin around, pressing down the skin where it needs to sit lower, adjusting the feather shafts, etc... you take my needle away I will be hooped.

I have a bird that was done a couple years ago, it’s been improperly stored and had stuff rested against it, is their anyway to rewet the bird and reposition/caulk the feathers so they look more lively again?
@ArtofTaxidermy
@ArtofTaxidermy 2 жыл бұрын
Sorry to say that you cant soak it.. it will turn into a feather soup... .Doing the proper taxidermy work is one thing.. caring for them properly is totally a different story.

@@ArtofTaxidermy I have 1 to do and can use any and all tips, but I can't work on it for a while due to 1 eye having a retinal detachment, and it needing healing from surgery. Plus I am wearing an eye patch now. It could be 3 months before I can actually do the mount. Birds aren't my thing and doing it with 1 eye won't work. So if you have a video by then, it will help me alot. Might be 6 months, have to see what the doc says. I also have a huge coyote to do, same issue, plus weight of wet hide on the form. Customers just have to wait. Had the goose since last feb, so over a year already. Skin is prepped and frozen, feet done, bill painted... then this eye thing happens.

If I understand this correctly you are actually cutting an opening in the skin and injecting the caulk .. Cutting the holes after you have it sewn up and the skin arranged ?
@ArtofTaxidermy
@ArtofTaxidermy 2 жыл бұрын
Yes... I poke a whole just big enough for the caulking gun to go through,, apply the caulk, then pull out and leave it like that..

Do you think when you use dry borax that all the borax gets pulled off the skin and sticks to the caulk? Would that be another reason why you soak your birds in you solution?
@ArtofTaxidermy
@ArtofTaxidermy 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jim, the reason I’m using dry borax in fleshing process is only to make it easier to work with the slime and the extra grease on the skin. It has no preserving effect on this stage.
