I didn't notice that the pork neck was not smoked, I made mine with the bacon and smoked pork neck. This was the best black eyed peas I've ever eaten, everyone loved them. :) They were smokey, because all three pork products were smoked, next time I'll try it with fresh pork necks. (but not this time, they're on the stove cooking again right now)

I come back here every new year and make this recipe. I’ve made it with ham hocks and neck bone. This year I’m trying it with andouille sausage. I hope it turns out just as good. Happy New Years to everyone

My friend's grandma was from the south, and used to make black eyed peas every New Year's....I miss it. =(

They taste kind of like Baby Lima beans. Sort of creamy. Delicious when made as shown. Good source of fiber.

Born and raised in New Orleans.if you are cooking any type of Camilla beans/black eyed peas.put them in a strainer first and remove the gravel.your teeth will thank me.

Does anybody know if i need to use a dutch oven? if i just used a pot, would it not work?

khuaplox Any sturdy (heavy) large saucepan/ pot will too, but I recommend stainless steel or cast-iron. (I wouldn’t recommend a copper pot, though.)

may try this with crowder or purple hull peas...black eyed peas texture, taste and smell are disgusting to me...maybe because I grew up eating a lot of peas and beans of nearly variety, except black eyed peas...but I am a superstitious old fool and I eat black eyed peas on new years day...like taking medicine...the year, I did not eat them on new years day, was a terrible year for me and my family...I have a recipe for new years day that hides the smell and taste, I can live with the texture...
