RIP To the 19 US forces, one Malaysian force, and one Pakistani force who were killed in the Battle of Mogadishu

Imagine these vets can meet the Malaysian vets who were with them. It's actually surreal for me to hear the accounts of the gunner and commander of the Condor APC that got hit and then hear the accounts of the US soldiers who were in the very vehicle that got hit. The driver who died, Lance Corporal Mat Aznan Awang, then received Malaysia's highest honor and posthumously promoted to rank of Corporal. His daughter is now serving in the same unit he did.

Malaysian forces lost 1 man (Pvt Mat Aznan Awang), 9 injured and 4 vehicles destroyed. All 4 vehicles were immobilised and were destroyed by US Little Birds to prevent them falling into the hands of militia. Pvt Mat Aznan Awang would later be awarded SP, or Seri Pahlawan Gagah Perkasa, which is the highest gallantry award in Malaysia. He was also promoted to the rank of Corporal pothumously. His remains were brought back to his village in Kampung Parit Panjang, Baling, Kedah and was buried in full military honours. Pvt Rizal survived his ordeal. He was awarded the PGB, or Panglima Gagah Berani, which is the second highest gallantry award.

My first squad leader when i arrived in 4-31 was wounded there. Nice to see the rest of this story told and the 10thMTN get the credit it deserves. Too bad hollywood left this part out.

I was a 15T and a 15S (Blackhawk crew chief and Kiowa crew chief) in the Army from 2002-2008. I served in Iraq in 03 and Afghanistan in 06. I was in the unit that was involved in this incident for a time as well. This is hard to watch but I’m hoping that it’s therapeutic to some extent as well. Even though I wasn’t in this fight, it brings me back to some of the most memorable and horrifying moments that I remember from my time in service and even though I didn’t know these men, I feel a kinship with them and I weep for them and their families. Not only the ones that were injured or killed but also the ones who came home. Because what a lot of people fail to understand is that coming home without any major injuries makes you start questioning yourself. Why did some of my friends get hurt or killed and I’m okay? Did I not fight hard enough? Did I not take risks that i should have taken? Some of the men I lost were fathers. I didn’t have children then, so why not me? These questions are not easily addressed or answered and it takes a lot of time to understand that there’s no logic or reason to any of this. But while you’re attempting to learn that, you’re in a lot of pain. Our families are the ones that suffer the most during those times. They put up with us self medicating and being angry and refusing to acknowledge that we aren’t really upset with them and we know that we shouldn’t be treating them poorly but we’re doing it anyway because we don’t know what else to do. Ultimately, those of us that come out the other side of that fight are the ones whose wives and children are strong enough to stand and support us and not give up on us. They’re heroes and casualties in every sense of both of those words. I pray every single day for all of my brothers and sisters who still are trying to wade through this and make sense of it. If you’re reading this, it’s okay. Stop blaming yourself. You did your best and you did well. The fact is that nothing in combat is sensible or rational or logical and there is always going to be misery as a result of it. Don’t allow yourself or your family to fall victim to you trying to make sense of something that can’t be made sense of. Just be grateful that you are here now and that you have tomorrow to start over and then start over. Think of the people you lost but think about the good times. Smile about them and then do something positive in their memory because they cannot. Pray that, moving forward, humanity will find a better way to resolve conflicts than this and that our kids will have it a little better than we did. Take it one day at a time and be willing to admit that some of those days will be bad. Spend those days focusing on yourself and doing your best not to be destructive. Forgive yourself when you are destructive and apologize to anyone that you hurt and then forget about it and start over again. You’re loved and you’re important and you matter. Good luck. I’m rooting for you.

The 10th Mtn finally gets credit for their role in Mog. I'm glad their story was told for the watchers of this documentary. I knew quite a bit from the book "Black Hawk Down" but this brings to light things about the 10th Mtn's role into a much clearer light for me. Thanks to all involved, both in Mog and the makers of this Doc.

My Australian friend fought there - The Aussies never had problems with any warlords armies. They just killed every problem the came across! The Warlords stayed clear of the Aussies.

The bottom line for this entire incident is that it could’ve been avoided but Les Aspin and Bill Clinton denied the ground commander’s request for Bradley Fighting Vehicles and Abrams Tanks in May, 1993 out of sheer political consideration.

According to the film Black hawk down is not the same as what is painted on the history of our Army which is the Malaysian Army.. And even history has been recorded and acknowledged by high-ranking U.S. officials that the Malaysian Army was assisting the United States military in the mission to rescue the United States Army Rangers who were stranded and captured by the Somalis. Salute to the Malaysian Army..

The truth is the mission to capture farahaidid failed and US soldiers were surrounded and got pinned down. No soldiers from UN volunteered to rescue these US soldiers because it is a suicide mission. But, the comando unit from Malaysia volunteered to rescue the stranded US soldiers. These comandoes come in a UN humvee. These comandoes rescued US soldiers. Comandoes from Malaysia fought bravely. Few comandoes from Malaysia died rescuing US soldiers. Hv respect on Comandoes from Malaysia.

These men have me in tears of honor. They're the best guys you would ever know. If you're facing death, hope beyond hope that they're next to you, because it couldn't get any better for you.

Whenever I hear Tom Brokaw's voice it takes me back to third grade hearing him on the news talking about the invasion of Iraq. His voice and the tune they would play when Tom was about to give a report are permanently etched in my brain. Crazy how 20 some years later I can still remember those times sitting with my back to the tv while eating dinner with my folks not understanding what was going on. Crazy how time flies.

A SSG in one of the platoons in my company, while i was stationed in Hawaii back in 2002, told me he was a Private in the 2-14th Inf 10th Mtn Div as QRF for the Rangers. Black Hawk Down just came out and I asked how did he get his CIB if he hasn't gone to Afghanistan yet, so he told me a little story, but i had no idea it was this bad. Sad to know that Hollywood forgot to do their research to tell the full story, not only what would make a good movie. Also, there was a training op that is dedicated to the two Delta snipers that died trying to save the crew. The Shughart and Gordon Op is a no win scenario that tests leaders and the unit on how to handle themselves when the odds are stacked against you.

There are no words in my vocabulary to express the pride for the soldiers that experienced what I'd witnessed in this video.

I watched that movie 20 times at least over the years. Brutal to watch, I can't imagine how much worse it was to live it. Brave Brave men doing everything they could to help their fellow man, and their brothers in arms. Inspiring. Thank you for your service and your courage.

As a medic my first PSG in the 82nd ABN DIV in mid 2001 was with the 10th Mountain in and was part of the rescue unit. It makes a lot of since now why he was so hard on us. He knew what it was like to be in combat. I always just thought he was being an asshole being the young PV2 that I was. Now having served in both Afghanistan and Iraq I understand where he came from. I'm now a SNCO and drive my troops hard also.

In the days following. The wounded came to Germany. As a medic. I briefly cared for two of the soldiers. Never forgot about the night they came in. Actually the wounded arrived over two nights. As a young soldier it made an impact that I remember to this day.

This incident was 30 years ago, the age that did not have TiKtok and Snapchat that degenerate our young Americans. The age that we respected and honored our country, flag, and troops. The age that we dedicated ourselves to a sense of honor, to a life of courage, the a commitment to something greater than ourselves. The age we did not any slogan "Make America Great Again" because we were the greatest nation on earth! We owe these service members so much. Thank you and God bless you all.

Non American here... happened to be in Las Vegas for a conference when this happened 30 years ago, so not a young person. On TV there was a lot of hooha about no UN forces were there willing to help when US needs them. Didn't follow it in detail, but got the news later that the ordeal was completed. Chanced upon Black Hawk Down years after the movie was released (not a film fan, especially of US made war movies). In the movie there was a scene of Pakistani army, so I thought, oh, they did get UN help after all. Intrigued I searched and learned that Malaysia also helped. I could have missed it earlier, but I did not get that impression at all while in the US. Reading the comments here explains it. The only praises for the Malaysians only came from what looked to be Malaysian viewers. The great majority only saw the US as what matters. A few even ridiculed whatever non-US. Non-US souls are seen as meaningless. Yes, US has the better hardware (not a military expert so can't say who, in any, is the best in everything), but in a battle/life you take what you have in the moment. But the sense of hopelessness is that the US is so in itself that it does not recognise even friends. "What? The US needs tiny Malaysia to help to save US soldiers? With inferior armoury?" Instead of, "oh, we do have friends after all. Thank you Malaysia." None of the latter at all in the comments that I have seen. Zero. Sad. Pathetic. And so I do wish US Imperialism to go down and for US to learn to live within its means instead relying on abuse of the petrodollar to maintain its fake exceptionalism. Its show of militarism everywhere to maintain its 'prosperity'. I was there during "Black Hawk Down". I was on the USS Comstock (LSD-45), which was part of the ARG. I went to shore on a LCAC to run supplies ashore. All hell broke loose!

i watch the movie black hawk down without knowing that my countrymen risk their lives to save american personnels. only now 20 years later through the movie malbatt misi bakara the truth is told. i can only say that i am damn proud to be a malaysian!

Those men should've had a lot more troops, Apache attack helicopters, Specter Gun ships flying overhead, Even fighter jets if they needed them. And heavy armor on the ground like Tanks and other heavily armored vehicles, not just Hummers. They did the best they possibly could against thousands of armed militia that were high on Khat(Like Cocaine.). I salute all of them. But the Pentagon should never have put them in an unwinnable situation. It could have actually been a lot worse. I remember I was like 17 years old and was working at Pizza hut as a shift supervisor and another employee came in and slapped the daily Newspaper down on the desk and yelled "Look at this Bullshit!!" I looked and saw an American soldier who looked partly burnt and was clearly dead being dragged through the streets of Somalia. We didn't even know US troops were in Somalia. It was and is very sad.

General Milley has turned out to be 🗑️. Otherwise thanks for giving insight into what Hollywood left out. Thanks for the survivors who helped set the record straight, and fighting on in the days of the event. Screw the officials who denied the request for heavy armored vehicles and sending them into a situation in which the “leadership” underestimated.

I met Donovan L. 'Bull' Briley at OCS, he was a class ahead of me. You'll never meet a more dedicated, professional soldier. We lost a great warrior that day.

This is certainly a story that can write its own script for Black Hawk Down Part 2.

I’m 28 and a vet I have stories my dad told me about getting there when the marines did. It’s nice to see other perspectives from a situation he was far away enough to hear everything happening and not knowing what’s going on.

The biggest shock to me while watching this documentary was the part that informed us that the request for armor was denied by the Secretary of Defense, Les Aspin. Looking into this after the conclusion of the documentary I was somewhat consoled to read ``The deaths of U.S. soldiers in Somalia because of inadequate military support led to his [Aspin's] resignation.'' He got off very lightly in my opinion.

Unreal amounts of courage and bravery from these soldiers.

I invaded Iraq as an Infantryman with A Co 2-14 as a part of Task Force Viking. Then another Baghdad tour from ‘04 - ‘05. We were often reminded of our 2-14 predecessors in Mogadishu. I thought of these Soldiers often and worked hard to live up to their example. May God bless the veterans involved in this hellish operation.

we had to do the Mogadishu mile every year i was in 2-14 to honor these guys. also 2-14 battalion HQ has a dedicated area for pfc martin with his helmet, boots, and uniform if i remember right.

I was in the 10th Mountain Division from 2001 - 2004. One of the NCO ‘s in my Company was in 2-14th in Somalia at that time. All of us new guys always looked up to him. We were able to see the Black Hawk Down movie before it was released in the theaters on base and boy did that get us all pumped up for when it was our turn to go fight in Afghanistan. CLIMB TO GLORY ! ! !

I have met BG (Ret) David and he is an awesome man. Extremely humble man who truly cares about the well being of the people that serve under him. He is a true hero and has my utmost respect.

Sec of Defense denies the request for armor. M1 tanks would have been a huge difference maker in this. DOD also denied request for C130 gunship to be available which could have saved many lives. Another case of military on the ground being let down by their superiors. These soldiers deserved better

This is a bit difficult to watch. I was attached to 13th MEU(SOC) and we were off the coast days after the battle conducting ops for about 6 months. I have a very good friend who was a pilot with the 160th, have talked to many soldiers there and met and chatted with CWO4 Durant. This takes me back to just how much suffering and tyranny the Somalis had to live through and how furious we all were at the situation. Loading sandbags into 5tons as our only protection and trying work with skeptical UN forces all while knowing what had just happened with ROE that made our jobs even more difficult. We had a "humanitarian" mission but we all wanted some payback. Hindsight is what is but at the time it was such a frustrating scenario. I had been to alot of horrible countries in my career in the Corps but my time Somalia really made me appreciate America and all that we have even more than I had before. Those Americans who died and fought there get my highest respect. True warriors fighting for their brothers on their right and left.

I remember this fiasco. I was living in Fayetteville, NC. SF DELTA and Green Berets that I knew went over to Samalia and into Mogadishu to feed the starving population. All hell broke loose and over 100 US Soldiers were killed and injured in the incident. I remember when the Soldiers returned home, it was not good, a lot of anger from these men. It haunts them to this day, RAGE

Les Aspin should have been dismissed for that decision. Shameful to the core.

The fact that Gen. Garison requested AC-130 Spectre and Bradley IFVs or APCs and denied by Washington was one of the reasons for the failure of the raid, also since it's probably impossible to conduct the raid in the night, because of the principals were meeting in the afternoon Oct 3rd and probably be over by sun down, was one of the reasons the raid failed. Lastly the US used the same mission template like the previous raid, by using heavily armed Rangers to create perimeter around the raiding building, the Deltas would physically conduct the raid into the target building, everything was done by helo insertion and then finally exfil by ground vehicles, the Somalis learned from this and prepared a counter tactic against the US strategy, they just need to know where and when, the question of how the Americans would conduct the raid is already known for most part.

RIP. We need to stop fighting the wars and battles of other countries that can't or refuse to stop fighting amongst themselves. I believe fully and whole heartedly that our founding fathers faught for our freedoms we enjoy today, let these other countries and their people fight for their freedom. We had our civil war and our revolutionary War. And we were pulled into WWII at no fault of our own. I think America needs to and should sit out everyone else's wars from here on out. I'm seeing that in Alaska that 2 of our apache helicopters went down and 3 men died from this in a training accident. Bring all America's fighting men and women home now and let the rest of the world handle their own internal problems.

Real sad that the Hollywood film did not show the true story of this battle far too many think the film is 100% what did take place. Thank you.

For me, the movie's really great and it's one of my all time favourite war movies, but looking at the documentary now and realising the full extent of the battle, I feel like the movie fail to do justice to the brutality and severity of the real battle that took place and to the soldiers who fought so valiantly and heriocly, the courage and dedication they showed to go back there for Round 2 to rescue their fellow brothers in arms. And lastly but not the least, to the Malaysian UN soldiers who were not shown/depicted in the movie. After all, BHD is a TV show-worthy battle cropped and compressed down into a 2hr movie. Therefore, it is bound to have some complications and missed out or fail to depict some scenes. I really wish if they make a TV show out of it, showing full detail and scene by scene representation of every event and tidbits that took place on that fateful day.

I'm using my wife's tablet. I spent time in that craphole in the early days of the deployment. I saw all of those places they talked about. I always tell people that the city they shot the movie in was nicer looking then Mogadishu. They had a soccer tournament between all the countries supporting the cluster F, in that stadium. As I slide down the banister of life, I will always think of Somali as a splinter in my a**.

Good to hear the account of the 10th Mnt TF. Would love to see the interview of those in the 101st who were shot down (RPG) through the tail boom or fuel cell that occurs on the day before Oct 2nd. One of the Occupants was an instructor of mine many moons ago.
