#WakandaForever #marvel #Review
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was a hard movie to watch. Not saying that because it was bad-it wasn;t perfect, but I’ll get into that in a minute. For a movie about magic plants and people living underwater and mutants-it has a real emotional heart at its core. Because everyone in the audience is mourning the loss of Chadwick boseman-just like the characters on screen are mourning T’Challa. It’s the kind of personal connection to a movie that you don’t usually get, apart from documentaries.
In a franchise that was not the Marvel Cinematic Universe, they probably would have delayed this movie for a few years But, that’s not reaLly an option with Marvel, because this film exists in part, to set up more movies and TV shows. That’s actually this movie’s biggest drawback that I'll talk about in a second.
Writer Director Ryan Coogler stopped into this movie with a broken heart, mourning his friend-and I think they found the perfect way to write T’Challa out of the franchise. For one, it was brilliant to give T’Challa a mysterious disease that he kept hidden from everyone-because this is a reflection of Chadwick Boseman’s life, and makes the onscreen death more tragic.
I mean think about it, there are hundreds of ways they could have handled this that would have just felt off. T’Challa could have been attacked and killed by Namor’s people in the first scene. Or he could have been assassinated by some splinter group loyal to Killmonger. Or hell, they could have had the character go into space only to return as a different actor in the future.
Instead they used the character’s death to motivate the character, and not plot. Shuri is the focus of this film. She begins the move with a prayer, and she ends it by sparing Namor’s life. She is angry at T'Challa;s death. Angry at Killmonger for destroying the herb, angry at herself for failing to save him-and probably, angry at her brother for keeping his illness a secret.
That rag drives Shuri’s heart through the whole story, as she has to eventually answer the question: what kind of ruler is she going to be?
And Ryan Coogler also, once again, gives us one of the best-if not the best-MCU villain in namor. Namor in the comics has never been a household name. Even though Aquaman debuted later, Namor doesn;t have that name recognition. No comic readers know that he is a badass-sometimes a good guy, sometimes a bad guy-but always an a-hole who’s trying to bone Mr Fantatsic;s wife.
Aquaman comics even borrowed Namor’s edginess into the 90s. Reviving him into the king of the bro-cean that Josn Mamoa embodies. So namor was ripe for reinvention on the big screen, and this was perfect. Killmonger was reimaged as a villain who carried the scars of slavery and poverty-a perfect counterpoint to wakanda’s isolated civilization.
Namor is another reflection of wakanda. What if the heart shaped herb was found by people who were already oppressed? People who wanted nothing to do with the colonizers. In the comics, namor is always mad about humanity spoiling the seas. But in this movie, the reaction is to something less ambiguous-he is protecting his people form genocide.
He’s a Moses figure, leading his people away form slavery and genocide-or imagine if superman was able to lead survibirs of kpyon into a afe location.
Okay, yeah, like Kandor. So talocan and wanda are flip side of each other. In the comics wakanda and atlantis were both always secret societies, but this movie’s brilliance is the reason those societies each stayed secret. Talacon felt like a real place, filled with real people-a million times better realized than the Atlantis we got in Aquaman.

I think everyone is overthinking the introduction of Tchalla's son. For me, i dont think its not because Marvel is setting him for the future (because thats going to be a disservice to Shuri who just became BP), but to close off her plotline about her "feeling alone" because all of her family is dead. In the funeral of Queen Ramonda, she said her heart was buried along with her, so with introducing her nephew, she can now have a renewed sense of hope and source of familial love.

Great comment and observation, unfortunately not everyone can appreciate the difficulty of pulling this movie off and honoring a real life tragic death of Chadwick Boseman. That post credit scene for me had to be easily top 3 ever of the Marvel cinematic universe. Great way to keep the Black Panther character alive and relevant in the MCU for years to come.

Dude with the glasses completely misread the prince T’challa scene. It’s about beauty of having kids and she literally thought her entire family was dead. Her entire family died within like 6-7 years. Her realizing she still has family and a connection to T’challa and that his spirit will be passed on through Tuson/T’challa was so beautiful. It was the best part of the movie for me. Wild that someone didn’t like it as much he seemed to

The beauty and magic of seeing the next generation is also matched by the hope for the future. Shuri was feeling alone and hopeless, and then she finds out that she actually does have a hopeful future.

The reveal at the end of prince T’Challa was more than homage to Chadwick. It was Shuri realizing not all her family is gone. She thought she was the last of her family and I thought it was heartwarming to see her realize she wasn’t alone.

I think some people are missing some of the biggest themes. The Riri character’s inclusion is a continuation of both T’challa and Killmonger’s legacies and is central to the story. Shuri is continuing their legacy of extending the protection of Wakanda to the 6th tribe. She is viewing Riri as a part of her people who she needs to protect. She also sees herself in her: a genius intellect, young, gifted, and black. She becomes a big sister to her and mentors her the way her big brother did. The reason Wakanda and Talocan can’t agree is that Wakanda won’t allow Riri to be harmed. This makes her a key piece of the story.

He Got his A** Kicked By the Dora milaje. Val would have been Debriefed on that. Plus the First Black Panther Movie Was More like a Phase 1 MCU Film to Build the World of Wakanda More....Now we Know the Main Player's there after Civil War,Infinity War Etc. So Adding to the MCU With Val/Riri Williams is fine. Val Only has to Show up for a few Scene's In a Few Projects and by the Time the Thunder Bolt's Movie. She will have a true Fleshed out Character Arc . The MCU Is a ever Expanding Franchise . I also Think Having Riri Gives Shuri a Non Wakanda Friend For the Future. Someone she can count on. The main opinion I have on on Okoye and M’Baku is that they both have story arcs that span multiple movies. 1. M’Baku went from someone who was an outsider who wanted the throne to someone who respected T’Challa, to someone who was a friend and ally, to someone who could take care of Shuri, complete arc. 2. Okoye made mistakes in BP 1 and did not get any consequences for it. She was forgiven and moved on. Her losing her status was a good story for her. Now we can see her redeem herself as a midnight angel. She can become her own person not just a loyal fighter.

Watching Queen and Shuri trying to hold on as the only 2 left behind to lead the kingdom and when Shuri screamed the battle cry in her own BP suit were so emotional for me. Letitia's performance deserves the praise. Angela Bassett, gosh, you can feel her emotional struggle while trying to do her role as a Queen protecting her country and also her only family left. Ryan C. had a HUGE job ahead of him. The only thing I have seen like this was the head actor of Spartacus dying from cancer and having to be replaced. Ryan had to 1) make a memorial to Chad Wick which he nailled 100% 2) keep the MCU moving forward, which he did OK, but similar to Avengers 2, the moving the universe forward parts are felt ( the movie was too long to me, not in a boring way, but in a logistics way that it didnt NEED to be this long) and 3) tell a completed sequel story. Knowing a little about the comic book that this is sort of based on, I see why they went in a lot of the directions they went. One thing I 10000% hope more marvel movies do, is have the final battle look more like two actors fighting , rather than 2 cgi creations fighting. Aneka is not pronounced "A-nee-ka", it's "A-neh-ka", Nakia is pronounced "Na-keey-a 😝 1. Okoye's story was purposely underdeveloped here for good reason because she has her own show coming up which will explore her misguided loyalty to the throne as a General in BP1 which led to her dismissal by Queen Ramonda in Wakanda Forever. Coogler's choice here is brilliant. 2. Ayo and Aneka's romantic relationship should absolutely have been more prominent and it seems it was Disney's top brass choice not to show prominence of it versus Ryan Coogler who we know would never shy away from showing any relationship dynamics. 3. The inclusion of Riri, Val and Ross were effective plot devices and there has to be a connectivity to the outside world because the world is coming for Wakanda. 4. Recasting T'Challa would have been a disaster and so glad they went with having T'Challa having a son with Nakia and having him named Toussaint is honour of the Haitian revolutionary leader as well as T'Challa is a stroke of genius. 4. Matt completely doesn't get the multi-arch importance and purpose of Wakanda Forever and to be brutally honest it's because this isn't his culture nor does he care to grasp it, he has such a white, westernized perspective which comes off as patronizing and bland. 5. Thank you Greg Alba (the reel rejects) for really grasping why the movie was weaved and crafted the way it was.

Number 4 of your list of points is the MAIN FREAKIN point on why most of us colored people CRIED during the trailer, and most white reactors didn't cry as much, because all of us colored people, it seemed that Chadwick's death felt very SYMBOLIC of us as colored people and the grief and pain weve all had to live through being citizens of America. As a native American, I cried during the trailer, and movie as well, because although the movie isn't outright about oppression, there is this quiet symbolic feeling to it that FEELS like we lost a symbol of hope for us, I DONT KNOW, it's so subtle of a feeling but is loud in it's feeling.....it's a feeling that reverberated through the M.C.U.'s multicultural fan base that emotionally connected with is that some European people can't sympathize with. I can't quite hit the nail on the head with this explanation, but I feel that those of you who read my comment who are the multicultural fan base understand what I'm grasping at.

I liked the tone of this movie. This felt like a classic Marvel movie from Phase 1 where there was some actual weight behind the threat and there was an actual storyline. I also like that there wasn't all whole lot of "fan service" being played out in the film. Don't get me wrong I like a good cameo as much as the next geek, but it should serve some purpose - like a post credits scene with Val giving the Thunderbolts a call to head to Wakanda.

I agree There’s a lot of important reasons riri was in the movie.. THE MOST IMPORTANT… if the CIA built the vibruniam detector then namor would want to kill the whole cia or America this kept that technology contained to only riri and made it easier and cleaner to contain the threat aka riri and that way he want targeting USA so it kept talokan as a secret nation which played a big part … Also after the first movie it ended with then wanting to make more connections and interact with Black America which this show cases so it fits with what happen at the end of the first movie and you want them to flesh out every character like the midnight angels and iron heart but that’s the reason there getting spin offs to fill in the gaps casue if they told there stories in full ryan would be here saying there was to many arcs and blah blah blah and that they were unnecessary like that’s the point of spin offs we got what we needed for the film and the spin offs will fill the gaps and that’s ok

Ironheart could've easily been introduced in a new Spider-Man movie with their MIT connections but Spidey is ironed out. They even made Mysterio Iron Man's villian 🙄 I'm over basic origin stories like in She-Hulk. Riri would not have made sense debuting in a Ant-Man or GOTG movie. greg’s comments on Okoye and Riri are on point. I agree that the addition of Ironheart serves an important narrative purpose. Shuri is protecting riri from the talokans, not just because of her nobleness or sympathy, but because she sees herself in Riri. She is gifted and innocent, and has been enjoying much of her life thanks to that talent. However, she is on the verge of being thrown (or in Shuri’s case, already thrown) into a darker world where her talents are not a gift but a curse. If Shuri could save riri, perhaps she could also save the innocent younger sister that was 2018’s Shuri.
@chillcago
@chillcago Жыл бұрын
Another one... Riri was necessary for more than comic relief and a show setup. Her sense of humor and nature is very much like Shuri from the 2018 film. Here we have Shuri struggling to find herself amongst her grief and standing right along with her is a reminder of who she was before she let grief take control. Riri gave Shuri someone and something to fight for... Not just Fighting for Riri but fighting for the innocence that Riri represents. You could even call back to the "Asgard is a people" vibe from Ragnarok in Shuri realizing that Riri was the future she wanted to save.

I love the way the story felt so organic and personal. It wasn’t forced and felt so natural. It wasn’t perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but it worked exceptionally well, melding the two cultures of Wakanda and introducing us to Talokan. They may be technologically different, but they share the same DNA. How they dealt with Chadwick Boseman’s and T’Challa’s death was beautiful. I cried so many times, and I was reminded of how difficult it can be when you lose a loved one. Grief is one of the hardest to convey and easiest to fuck up on film. Yet, Ryan Coogler did an excellent job guiding us through Shuri’s struggle with grief throughout the film. The running time was a bit on the long side, and some side characters could’ve been removed from the story, and it would’ve still worked. Still, I thoroughly enjoyed every bit of this movie, and I will be watching it again soon. I give it a solid 7.5 out of 10. Excellent job!

This was difficult for me as Wakanda Forever encompassed so many themes and stories within a story that really speak to those with African ancestry and not one person on this panel can relate to that. While many watching will miss these nuggets and downgrade the movie, those themes will speak strongly to those who can relate. This is why representation in Hollywood story telling is important. More than just a particular demographic go to the theaters. Equally important, is representation when offering panel critiques so that other voices are heard when recounting these stories. Just wanted to offer this thought as the MCU is becoming more diverse.

Had she not been in the movie, the entire film would've been seen as much more dour than it already was. While I still maintain that the various governments of the world's lust for Vibranium is the true villain of the movie, the Alegre de Fountaine cameo could've easily been trimmed because the only appearance you'd need is her at the war table talking about destabilization, hinting at both a concept tackled in the first movie as well as something that both Queen Ramonda & Namor had mentioned during this movie.

I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED this film. Excellent acting, memorable scenes and beautiful scenery. It had real stakes, I mean Riri Williams was an essential part of this movie, she was the "mcguffin" basically, she was the reason for the conflict between Wakanda and Talacon, but she also had personality, you give a damn about her. In my opinion this was one of the most epic movies in the MCU, outside of the AVENGERS movies. If Ryan Coogler doesn't get to direct SECRET WARS, that would be a damn shame. Imo. My rating 9.9/10

I loved this movie. I’ve seen it three times already (twice Thursday and once Friday), and I feel like I could write a thesis paper on its depth. The first movie told a story of a world where Black people were able to avoid slavery and thrive, but begged the question “why didn’t you help us [Black Americans] Wakanda?”. Wakanda Forever told a story that relates to the frequent bad-blood between minority groups and how often poor communities fight over resources, and what it would be like if we all saw ourselves as the same community. Coogler being from CA probably saw this all of the time growing up. At the same time, he’s also telling a story of “what if we stopped and took the time to appreciate this Black man’s life?” In 2020 (and many years before / after), the world seems to devalue Black lives as ‘replaceable’. This is why I’m so thankful that they took the time to value Chadwick / T’Challa and show how much he’s loved… so much so that they wrapped an entire movie around it. I don’t expect everyone to get this, but this movie speaks so deeply to so many of us. ❤

The way Riri mirrored Iron Man was pretty good imo. They both escaped from people who wanted them to build something in a suit made from what they could find. Ho Yinsen sacrifices himself for Tony & Queen Ramonda sacrifices herself for Riri. They both fly to high and end up falling down, then fly too high again with an upgraded suit in an attempt to stop the villain.

I think it’s a bit tone death to say that you wouldn’t care if we never see T’Challa again. It’s about representation. We barely have any front running black male leads that’s why it’s important. The one we have still seem like side characters.

Just saw this movie and thought it was great! I think one important take from this movie is that some things can just 'slip through'. In a universe where there is advance technology, magic, time travel, great universe-creating powers; it is easy to feel powerful, omnipotent perhaps. And yet, this one life could not be saved. Some things can be lost forever, and I think this is great for MCU. I guess we have been very comfortable with a comic book movie where anything is possible, more variants, more universe, that a characters death has somewhat lost it's meaning.

I was a few minutes into the the movie and thought.. "this is already better than Thor Love and Thunder". It might have seemed repetitive to touch on grief in so many phase 4 projects but it makes total sense after the devastation that Thanos caused. Phase 4 was not great but it started with a great project in Wandavision and closes out with another examination of grief with Wakanda Forever. Not everything worked in this movie for me but it was certainly full of powerful performances. The moment I physically felt like the movie was going on for a while I knew something was off and yet it also felt rushed at the end. Being part of a broader universe is what wasted some time that should've been serving the main story more. That final battle needed a bit more time to feel like a struggle. Shuri and Namor struggled through their fight but I kinda wanted to feel that for the other characters. Or at least feel like that battle also had stakes. Almost all the wakanda forces got killed on that ship and yet conviniently no one important felt like they were in danger

I thought that Okoye being dismissed was going to show that the queen was letting her emotions rule her and this was not worthy to rule after T’Challa, but then she hits us with that monologue about how Okoye had failed the nation and been the one to insist on taking the princess on a field mission against the queen’s better judgement. It was a nice precursor to the Kilmonger debate later about T’Challa being level headed but too noble, and T’Chaka being too driven to look good like he had a blameless legacy. Then having M’Baku be the voice of reason later showed how far Shuri had been consumed by revenge. Despite its flaws, this movie had many really well done pieces performed by top notch actors.

This movie was incredible! The new take on Namor was phenomenal! Absolutely phenomenal. I knew Shuri would become the new black panther, leticia was good but she just doesn’t have the fan adoration like Chadwick. No one cheered when she was revealed as the black panther in her ok new suit. Seeing Namor finally on screen with his ankle wings and flying in and out of the ocean just like the comics, PERFECT. Angela Bassett gave best performance of her career! Danai and Lupita were both exceptional, and I LOVED the unexpected appearance of Julia L-D as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine!! The visuals were outstanding in this movie, the emotion was raw, the love letter to Chadwick hit me hard. 10/10

Honestly this movie was soooo honest to god beautiful. I cried 3 times and o honestly have never cried in movies. 1. The Riri story was significant; she was the reason for the conflict, the story won’t move forward without her, Namor is fighting wakanda because of her. The Val story is important, because she represents the CIA/US/WORLD that is trying to take advantage of wakanda’s moments of weakness. Ross was a blast from the past character, but also the double agent who needed to be there to help wakanda. 2. The story’s main themes are so poignant, strong, and impactful and you can really feel it. Like the guy said, it leaves you on the edge of your seat. Talokan is a powerful foe. They are a match to wakanda and if you don’t choose your sides right they might become your enemies (which is what happened). I loves how we actually see the two cultures of wakanda (afrofuturistic) and Talokan (underwater mesoamerican) juxtapose on the themes of cautious modernization, generation trauma and familial grief. It was truly beautiful. 3. Honestly I feel like Riri’s introduction as iron heart could have waited, her friendship and storyline as a young scientist and protege to Shuti was a good start. I also kinda agree that we got a little more of a storyline with Okoye and Aneka, but I know it will come in the show so I’m not concerned. The best part of the film however was truly Shuri, I cannot say how happy and amazed I am to see a woman finally have that main character journey. The only silver lining of Chadwick’s death (if there is one RIP) is that it pushed Shuri’s story, not as an afterthought of a male hero, but as a necessary one alongside the hero. Her and Queen Ramonda, are the true successors of the throne, but are underestimated because they are woman. The Queen’s struggles of protecting her country, while, Shruri’s struggles uth grief and guilt are so tough to digest. On an overall note this was a movie worthy of the highest accolade and a beautiful tribute to Chadwick. Ryan, I respect your opinion but it’s here I would like to say that this movie is a little more about just marvel and superheroes and you need to read the underlying tones of race, gender and emotion to fully comprehend it. Thanks if you read this far lol!

This movie to me was on par with the first but on different lanes. This was more relatable in light of what happened. Plus it was done in a tasteful way, considering CB was the face of BP. Imagine if it was as upbeat as the first film? Shuri being happy go lucky, Nakia being provocative and adventurous. Also there is time to develop Okoye's story in future, unfortunately due to CB death, they had to pivot. Also his son is a way for them to develop the King T'challa story line in future, rather than closing that door completely with not recasting him. This was brilliant.

The biggest thing that took me out for a moment was Val’s comment that she had the beads bugged. While that would be very in character, I immediately had questions of when, and HOW would she (or whoever her team is) even know how to do that? It just struck me as very convenient. And it’s probably just there to set up getting Ross out of the CIA and into Wakanda more or less permanently.

The purpose of her bugging the beads, I believe, is to show that the CIA now knows that there is another superpower other than Wakanda and that this is most likely responsible for Ramonda's demise. Future films will almost certainly show them probing around. Knowing she is the CIA director, the WHEN and HOW questions are simple to answer. I'd expect her to know every single piece of evidence on the "crime scene" before she arrives, and I'd expect her to have guys within the organisation who can tamper with evidence at her command while remaining discreet, and I'd expect her to have those sci-fi microphone transmitters that are thinner than adhesive tapes and invisible to the untrained eye when applied to the beads.

MUCH APPRECIATED ! I think some people fell so hard in love with Chadwick, that any decision would be a cardinal sin for them. For me honestly that was a wonderful movie, they did the best they could, gave justice to Chadwick/T’Challa and were comic accurate with Shuri, plus bad ass introduction with Namor. Went to cinema my third time yesterday, and I ain’t complaining cause there’s just so much to discover with every new look at it !

with all due respect, I highly disagree with your opinion Ryan. This film was exceptional. It did so many things ESPECIALLY for culture and for BIPOC. It tackled the idea of grief with perfection. The “side plots” in my opinion were absolutely necessary, with Val, dealing with the ending of the first Black Panther; opening up to the world of course it will have its consequences and having Val become the new director of the CIA makes so much sense for the future. As for Riri Williams, it introduced her in the perfect way and it has us very excited to see her in the future of the MCU. It honestly bothers me how most of the criticism comes for non BIPOC. But overall I loved this movie & it is definitely the best out of Phase 4, hands down.

Couldn’t agree more. A major criticism is that it felt like set up for content down the line which is unfortunate cause even if the story is good and makes sense, it will still get negatively critiqued since we know so much of what’s coming next. Riri had more development and was more enjoyable than a lot of side characters from previous marvel movies. This was a great follow up to the first movie. We’re seeing the repercussions of T’challa revealing the real wakanda to the rest the world, amazing villain with a believable motive, and a great character arc for shuri. It’s definitely in the top two best movies in phase 4 for me. Right up there with no way home.

Chadwick Boseman left a huge void that, unfortunately, is impossible to fill. His gravitas and character was the central force in the first Black Panther. The fact that Black Panther was also couched between Avengers Civil War and Infinity War (during the era when Marvel was at the height of their cohesive storytelling). This entire film feels like we are watching supporting characters carry an entire movie.

This makes no sense. Some of the most memorable moments from the first film involved "supporting characters" not tchalla. The "hey auntie meme", nothing to do with him, the colonizer trope, shuri. The "what are those" moment shuri...mbaku threatening ross...okoye throwing her wig... Maybe you need to rewatch the film. T'Challa will be sorely missed but that first film was collective effort that they all carried.

The problem is that we know too much. We know what projects will be released later on down the line so every character they’ll introduce will now be “set up” or a “commercial” rather than just a cool character, cameo that moved the plot forward. Riri Williams created the device that allowed other countries to search for vibranium. Why is the world now searching for more vibranium? T,challa blew the whistle on that so now namor is holding wakanda and riri responsible for putting his people in danger. Makes a lot of sense to me. But it just so happens that we know she’s getting her own show so now it looks bad and doesn’t seem necessary. Her character in this movie was similar to that of a Helen Choi from age ultron and war machine wrapped up in one.

The stuff with Val and Ross was important for the long-term MCU. It's showing that the US government may not be trustworthy. We've seen this in FATWS, Thunderbolts will lean into it and of course Secret Invasion. Honestly, people complain that post-endgame isn't narratively tied together, and then they complain when efforts are made to tie it together.
