In this video we're taking a look at how you can give the footage in your videos a soft glow effect kind of like what a black pro-mist filter does, but by using a few DaVinci Resolve editing techniques. We're also talking about which of the options is actually the better one.

Bro, you are reading my mind. Just yesterday I was on the fence of ordering Black mist filter but decided to do some research so this review came in very handy! The only real downside of using the filter is that the look is baked in, you can't remove it afterward. And the glow trick is pretty useful because you can always remove it if you don't like it.

Love this! It's a great topic to discuss. I prefer getting as much done in-camera as well. You're definitely right about meeting expectations with clients!

Yeah, getting it right in camera just saves so much time. On the topic of clients, I've had to edit footage before where the DP had a 1/4 mist filter on and I got asked if I could "do anything about the look" I was like, "Yeah, I can go out there and shoot it all over again, but that's about the best I can offer" 😂

Just like you, I also like to create as much of the final look as possible while shooting. It saves time when editing and gives you a much more coherent look over multiple scenes.

Absolutely! If you have to fix it in post it probably means something needed fixing way earlier in the process 😁

you'll get a more consistent look by applying the gaussian technique pre-grade (just like a filter is baked pre grade) rather than at the end. The grade would only amplify the effects. Also, switch try luminosity rather than just screen. i prefer luminosity and I just reduce opacity or use the key feature.

Will give this a shot if I end up using that method at some point 😁

This is superb tips! At least for non professional film maker like me. I have a question, instead of Screen, wouldn't Linear Dodge closer to the misty effect?
@georgekamenov_
@georgekamenov_ Жыл бұрын
I feel like it kind of depends. There are a few blending modes that might end up working well. In some cases linear dodge could be better, yeah.

Why not try the mist effect in the vmur panel. It is especially designed to reproduce a mistfilter without the glow. As someone who is also meddling with vfx, i must say that it is not complicated to find better ways to do this in post. The concept is called frequency separation. The mist effect in resolve does nice extremely nicely plus we still get to choose if we want to have the glow or not.

i mean to great results you should combine glow and gaussian or something like that. the effects will not look as good on its own
@georgekamenov_
@georgekamenov_ Жыл бұрын
Technically you can yeah, but I pretty much think that if either of the effects don't look good on a clip on their own, combining them definitely won't help much. But you can definitely give it a shot. Like I said, I personally always prefer the real thing 😁

No need to make a layer mixer because the node itself has blend modes

Pretty sure every youtuber puts a pro-mist filter on now and they all look like clay. It will most definitely go out of fashion soon. Also, you can get a lot closer to your filter by messing with your contrast more.

p.s. not hating on your channel, I have the bell clicked, but I do despise the current trend in every talking-head filmmaker having this weird playdough color-grade. Surely Im not the only one who notices it
@georgekamenov_
@georgekamenov_ Жыл бұрын
Maybe you're right. It could go out of fashion but I still genuinely prefer the way a 1/8 filter makes the image look compared to the super digitally sharp 4k that most cameras spit out. That said, I do agree that the stronger filters like the 1/4 and 1/2 and so on are a bit much, though that's kind of why nowadays there's a variety of other diffusion filters that do slightly different things. Like with most things in the creative world, it's a personal preference thing, and that's completely normal and okay 😁

I'm pretty sure smooth glowing images have been the preferred style forever, literally, because they are more beautiful. Of course, certain situations demand a more gritty and realistic look, but there will always be a demand for the look that black mist filters produce.
