Usually, even the same sound mix version, it sounds mcuh better on Blu-ray than on other formats (DVD, SACD). Now that I think about it, I'm not sure if it's really like that or just the feeling I have, or the one I want to have. Hahahaha Just kidding. The same mix sounds better on Blu-ray

@@lcifer24 The DVD release of this was lossy. It might have had other issues. It's been a while since I heard it or read reviews. Very low opinions, generally. SACD can perform differently on system, than PCM. So, it's entirely possible that blu-rays perform best, in many cases, on your system.

Yes, my X800 drops the rear channels for 4.0 material, such as this. My OPPOs do fine, which is why I use them for Quad.

That's odd. Wouldn't it just be a "dead" center channel and play all the others?

I think the "rears" are typically (always?) assigned to the SL/SR. It can sound ok on a 5.1/7.1 system. However, I built a single-purpose Quad system for a reason!

@@lifeinsurround I guess I’m mostly just hoping someone who has the disc can say whether the audio encoding is 5.1 or 7.1. It’s probably 5.1, which is unfortunate, but one can always hope. Or I guess it might be 4.1 but I suspect modern encoders don’t really do that. Your player will tell you. Or your decoder. A 7.1 encoding with center, side left and side right just blank would be the smart way to do this

I think Rhino Quadio is 4.0. Some Sony BD players drop the rears, which is the tell.

To answer my own question, now that I have the disc, the default on my 7.1 speakers is indeed to use the sides instead of the rears. However, I was happy to find that thx select 2 music mode fixes this and I get the intended quad playback. This listening mode is getting to be a rarity on AV receivers so may not be too helpful for many for too long, but maybe other receivers have a similar mode. I still say encoding it as 7.1 but with center, ls and rs left blank is the way to do this right and get correct playback on the most different types of systems

It's the quad 4.0 mix from the 70's (not a new mix and/or master) which is very cool to have. I generally find if there's a quad mix it's generally more discreet and better than later 5.1 mixes. Good examples are this and dsotm, Doors singles greatest hits blueray. Actually, I haven't heard the Alan Parsons dsotm but I generally agree with others who say quads are better. Not sure if there's an inexpensive way to get the AP dsotm on physical media but would be grateful to anyone who knows. The original quad master tapes probably haven't been played as much and that's why they sound so much better. We are probably getting almost new master tape fidelity with these quad releases that were rarely touched much less remastered which is a good thing imo.
