I’ve watched a lot of reactions to this verse that Black Thought was spitting and it’s amazing to see the difference in reactions with the young heads vs the more old school people. Us older hip hop heads listen for content while the young ones listen for cadence. So many bars flew over most young listeners heads that it is sad to watch. Henrietta Lacks verse (ALONE) is a history lesson. This freestyle is by far already legendary status in my book.

@@tatutervo856 Henrietta Lacks was a back woman that had cervical cancer in the 50's. A dr. took her cancer cells and used them to create an immortal line of cells that will reproduce forever under the right conditions and are still being studied today. The cells still exist and are reproducing. It''s the basis for a lot of modern cancer treatments. Get it now? He's saying blacks are like henrietta lacks. Up in prison cells forever. Sick metaphor.

It's not just the unworldly breath control. It's metaphors like "we like Henrietta Lacks up in the cells" and "not another got more soul/Seoul, unless they're Korean" that makes this one of the best freestyles in all of Hip-Hop history.

He uses a technique known as Circular Breathing. Ironically, I read about him using it in an old article a week or so before discovering this freestyle. Mostly used by people who play wind instruments...and those who casually SET FIRE to microphones and minds.

Duuuuude, that Korean line...! And the Henrietta Lacks line is a simile AND a metaphor...just astounding! But, "Earth, Wind and Fire baa de ahh..."! I...was...just...DONE! I'm sure we've all run through the usual suspects and debated on who's the "GOAT", but for me...my head has finally caught up with what my heart knew years ago when I heard "What They Do". He's Jimi Hendrix with a guitar in his hands...Superman with an immunity to Kryptonite. He's Neo..."The One".

This is the professor, he's teaching you black history. rewind an look up the historical references. you will be amazed. I am reading seven of the books he's referenced right now. There seem to be 20 more to my knowledge so far. This man is the spark for the flame. The bars are higher level that's what the youth hear that's what catches their ear. But the words he speaks have multiple meanings and even greater significance than just bars. Rewind, listen, listen again write it down an look it up. Then you will see how far his game is above the watered down rap their flooding the masses with now. The trick is he says it in a way the old and young lions can digest. True Master level teaching.

Dudes, APEX predators don't come from movies, they are top of the food chain animals, the top hunters in their environments such as the Lion in Africa, the Jaguar in South America, Wolves, the Great White Shark, or Killer Whales in the ocean or Man. Top of the food chain.

Remember when every hip hop lyricist was trying to blow the top off the standard. These days Rappers ain't nice just got some kinda beat with the cheapest lyrics bare minimums. Black Thought from The Roots the name says it all. He said I acknowledge the, original people's, not Oliver. He's got so many bars that are on another dimension over their heads. This too me is just another sad video of the reality of our youth failing to acknowledge the history heritage and comprehension that was displayed with finesse.

Yeah I’ve had to read up on a lot of lyrics which is one of the things I love about Black Thought. He’s got bars, but they’re dense with meaning and info and history. He’s a teacher as much as a rapper. Reminds me ZDLR in that way. Gotta look stuff up after you listen or you’ll miss a lot!!

The Roots were underground hip hop but most underground hip hop didn't acknowledge the mainstream as hip hop. Money talks talent walks is the criteria. Nowadays someone could blow your top off in a freestyle off the dome and still wouldn't get his credit for each line because it's not catered to the sub par standard that is mumble rap.

Big ups to y'all for reacting to this legendary Funk Flex freestyle joint by Black Thought. He is one of the greatest of all time. He is a certified legend. He is part of one of the greatest groups of all time The Roots. Big ups to you for effing with a real lyricist in Black Thought. I appreciate immensely that ya'll reacted to this. Black spat so many heavy bars and so much knowledge. His wordplay game is on point too. He is an alien with the skills. No lie. I rebumped Black Thought's Funk Freestyle so many times a day when I first heard it in December 2017. Thought is one of the goats of rap. He exemplifies real rap and real substance. He epitomizes timeless rap and timeless music. He does not be rapping about nonsense. The Roots is one of the illest groups of all time. Thought has been rapping since the early 90s. He rapped with Em and Mos Def (Now Yasiin Bey) in a B.E.T. Cypher too. That freestyle is in my top 3. Locksmith's 2019 freestyle.and Daylyt's L.A. Leakers freestyle are in my top 3 too. React to Murda Mook's Funk Flex Freestyle, Locksmith's 2019 Shade 45 Freestyle, Daylyt's LA Leakers Freestyle, Locksmith's 2015 Shade 45 Freestyle, Papoose's Funk Flex Freestyle, Canibus's Greatest Freestyle song, Big L and Jay-Z's Freestyle from 1995, Motherless Child Freestyle by Big L, and Panda Freestyle by Futuristic when you get the chance. These aforementioned people are ill spitters too. @Quincie Cunningham

For you young brothers listening, an Apex predator refers to the animal kingdom. It's an animal that has no natural or known predators because it's at the top of the food chain within it's natural environment. For instance, the Great White Shark is an Apex predator because it's the king of the sea. The Lion is an Apex predator amongst all animals. The human being is the Supreme Apex predator because we tend to conquer everything we touch. Glad you brothers are listening to real hip hop.
