Black Thought & Questlove of The Roots sat down with Ebro in the Morning to have a great conversation about The Roots legacy, their role on The Tonight Show, and more.
Based on their new show 'Hip Hop: The Songs That Shook America', we had a conversation on the rise of religious rap including the impact of Kanye West's single "Jesus Walks," hip hop's flow into the mainstream with Run DMC's collaboration with Aerosmith, and their single "Rock Box," Jay-Z's legacy, including a debate on what his biggest single today is, and more.

Legends!! Had to be around 98 maybe 99, met the Roots after a dope show(smoking grooves tour I think) in Salt Lake City of all places(Im a military brat). The girls I was with came back up to our room @ the hotel and said "The Roots are downstairs in the lobby". My young drunk ass shoots down there & sees the whole entourage chilling playing scrabble @ like 1a.m. I make a whole ass of myself spitting "illadelph half life" lyrics slurring like a bum. They showed luv, but they're looking @ this tall, drunk & high dread like "damn! they got brothers out here too?" Until this latina(my homegirl) pulls me away to save myself from further embarrassment... That was the first, of my 10 times seeing The Roots... Salute to the Living Legends!!

So in 86 when Walk This Way dropped I thought they just got some dude that looked like The Rolling Stones to be the band in the video. Then like what 87-88 Aerosmith drops their new videos and I’m oh they’re a real band. A few years later I find out that Walk this way was a cover. Then even later I find out Aerosmith is in Sargent Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band. Mind blown cause I loved that crazy movie.
