Right now, they’re in Europe, but Atlanta-based rockers with a distinctly Southern musical accent, Blackberry Smoke, smoked Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium for two nights in February before jumping the pond.
Their latest album, You Hear Georgia, was produced by Dave Cobb in Nashville, and hit the top of the Billboard Americana/Folk chart when it was released in mid-2021. PG’s John Bohlinger caught up with guitarists Charlie Starr and Paul Jackson before their sold-out show at the Ryman to run down their ever-expanding universe of gear.

Hey Premiere Guitar! You guys edited in the wrong picture at the 10:50 to 10:54 minute area. The guitar you showed a picture of has a Varitone and is not Charlie's 335 in this video. Just a heads up.

Fantastic rig rundown guys. Charlie is awesome. Nice to hear him mention how great Warehouse Speakers are. I put one one in my 65 Princeton Reverb Reissue and it made a great amp even better. I even liked it better than a Celestion Gold I tried. I Couldn’t be happier with Warehouse and their prices are very reasonable.

Bolingbrook is always happy, enthusiastic and out of the way; He let’s the artist present their gear, and is pretty good at coaxing them to demo it.

Damn, Charlie is the frickin coolest. This probably the best rig rundown I've ever seen. No douchey roadies smacking chewing gum, no obnoxious background soundchecking, and Bolinger wasn't constantly interrupting the artist. Best of all, Charlie isn't awkward, and knows what he's using and why he's using it. He's a great player with a great ear, and a super cool cat.

what incredibly nice men these are. Spontaneous, cheerful and kind. Not arrogant. They take the time for internet interviews and rig rundowns. A great band with great, ordinary guys. I love them .And that goes for you too John .

I am an absolutely massive fan of Blackberry Smoke. They are a GREAT band and Charlie Starr is really awesome. They're carrying the Skynyrd torch for sure. I feel a really strong kindred spirit with Charlie and think we have the exact same influences. I've been recording Gary Rossington solos on my channel in the last couple of days as a tribute and I'm sure Blackberry Smoke will do a great tribute as well. We're southern boys for sure!

Rip Gary, yes bbs is a southern rock, but mostly they are a mix of crows and Atlanta jam more than southern power chords like LS did, in my humble opinion

@@shable1436 There's actually quite a bit more complexity to Skynyrd than they get credit for. I put them in the AC/DC sort of category that there are so many bad imitators of them that people start to think AC/DC isn't all that great either. I totally get what you're saying though and agree.

I grew up about 25 miles south of Lanett Alabama. In Smith's Station Alabama. If Charlie reads this, im glad someone from our area made it!! And yes Mr. Starr Sir you made it. Cause you make music that touches people in thier Souls!!! Thank you Sir !!!

Awesome Rig Rundown! Thank you! But, the guitar shown in the minute 10:48 (ES-345 gold hardware and bigsby) is a different guitar to the one Charlie is showing.

I just discovered Charlie and Blackberry Smoke. My first impression was they had a vibe that just struck me. It felt like I was listening to the Dead. Then I saw a video of Charlie wearing a jacket with Jerry’s “Tiger” guitar patch on it. Funny how this works universe works. I feel as if I was lead to Blackberry Smoke for a reason. True musicians are healing to listen to.

I'm so glad to finally get a close look at that black Esquire. I've done tons of research trying to find out about that guitar and even found it listed a few years ago on Reverb in a shop in Ohio and reached out to the shop that had sold them to ask them about it and they didn't really know too much about it. It's an unreal looking guitar!

Yes. Good one. Charlie is my favorite modern guitar player. So much vibe. Reminds me of Keef at times but he seems well versed and creative in any style. And cool he found that 335 in Louisville thats where I am

It’s funny…I came to this video for background on Charlie’s #1. Was watching a Satellites video from 1985 and I was thinking boy that LP Rick Richards is playing sure looks a lot like Charlie Starr’s black LP. And sure enough it is the same guitar. Amazing. I love that kind of guitar history.

Been listening to Blackberry Smoke for years and years, but I finally got the see them live a few months ago. If you're a fan, you really need to see them live if you get the opportunity. Charlie and the whole band are great!

60's P90's were hot because the amp wattage were getting higher and needed an extra signal kick to get grit from the amp. I just made that up, but feel free to repeat it.

“You can get use to anything” so true, in more ways than one. I didnt know sh*t about gear until I road my tele to death and brought to a tech after more than a decade of gigs but the pots went out. He was shocked at its state lol. Now I know better and am constantly making little adjustments along the way but usually when you are a gigging player and on a budget you just make it work and hope nothing implodes until it does
