Antelope moon, golden dates, desert flowers. There are hundreds of words which convey the beauty of African women. Copious amounts of time have been dedicated to this subject, in particular the amazing hair creations. Works of art, based on ancient knowledge, adorn the heads of women from the busy Malian metropolis of Bamako on the river Niger to the Sahara, the world's largest desert, on which the Tuareg nomads roam.
Black/Current is a space to provide both educational and entertaining content primarily by or about Black people. That’s Black Brits, Black Americans, Black Africans, Black Canadians, Black Australians and so forth. There is a really loud desire for diverse voices and stories and we want to be a part of that conversation.

I am of African descent from the Caribbean and as a youngster most of the girls with whom I grew up had a checker board type motif. In recent years when see discussions on ancient Egypt and see many statues of people with similar hair styles represented but people are discussing whether those statues represent Africans. And I say: Who else will be represented this way? It is completely African.

lovely documentary. the only thing i will say u got wrong was the conversations in hair salons. we gossip and talk about our personal problems. they kept quiet for the cameras. either than that everything else was spot on

So neat seeing other cultures braiding history! My ancestors in Celtic Austria (near the bce salt mines) were also recorded by Mesopotamia & Greeks as having long, braided hair close to the scalp or dread locks. ❤

I see the Dominicans as they tend to LISTEN when you tell them don't braid too tight. I stopped going to the African braiding shops bc they don't care if you have edges.
