In some ways, that Daytona situation reminds me of a messed up situation that occurred in F1 at Monza in 2019. Due to the uniquely high speeds seen at Monza, drivers usually trying and use the slipstream of the car ahead (drafting) to gain not just top speed, but lap time. The flip side is that nobody wants to be the lead car. In Q3 at Monza in 2019, and I should know because I was there, after a crash involving Kimi Raikkonen that brought out the red flag, the cars left didn't want to be first across the line as the final laps got underway. As the seconds ticked by, it became apparent that if they weren't careful, nobody would set a time. They did get a move on eventually, but with the exception of the McLaren of Carlos Sainz, it was too late. To a mixture of humour and bewilderment, to spectators, teams, drivers and journalists, nobody could improve their time set earlier in Q3. While the majority Italian crowd were pleased that a Ferrari driver was on pole position, Charles Leclerc, they also felt a bit flat with the anticlimactic and bizarre way the session ended

I still believe to this day that the 17 failing to qualify for Dega is what gave birth to the charter system in the cup series. Also the only group qualifying system to ever work on a superspeedway is done by ARCA. 5 or 6 cars at a time and they get 5 minutes, then the next group goes.

Agreed, much like how Riggs and Wimmer DNQing at Atlanta in 2004 gave us the top-35 rule. Personally I think we should have stuck with the two provisionals per race that we had from 1976-1994. But that's just me.

Its great that Nascar is trying new things now (I enjoyed Bristol Dirt for instance) but I just want a three race championship round more than anything!! Motorsports doesnt really work on a single racee championship IMO.

Just on time, the three drivers out would have been Larson, Allgaier and Gordon. But only being in the top 36 gave you a save starting spot - behind the "if" was only (!) decided by the owner points. This gave the spots to 5 drivers in the chase and one to Larson (who was "best of the rest"). The seventh was for Tony Stewart no matter what (championship provisional), however he was next in line for the owner points anyway. Now, NASCAR really dodged the bullet here. Imagine the scenario of 7 chase drivers down there plus either Stewart or Terry Labonte… In this case, an 18 year old title could have eliminated somebody from the current championship.

This shiznit pissed me off to no end. Daytona in July had pissed me off to absolutely no end. The 40 mph around the track screwed Joe Nemechek's chances. He got a ride with RAB Racing, had sponsorship from Toyota and had a car that could have easily made it based on single car speed. But instead, the drivers did all the BS, and Joe's lap was basically a single car run, then guys at the last second grouped up right and bumped the 29 out of the top 36. And don't even get me started on Fall Talladega. Joe was in, but NASCAR pitched a fit about something involving the oil tank, something that would have had no impact on the performance of the car, and disallowed his time. I don't remember watching that race much because I was so pissed off. The only time I was excited about group qualifying was the 2015 truck race at Daytona because Norm Benning timed in like 6th fastest or something in round 1

The 2007 Fall Talladega race had a stranger qualifying session with single car quals than these in 2014. The group quals created issues in California in 2018/19 when the cars in the final round failed to produce a time. F1 has made group qualifying work for years. Sure some tracks will produce predictable results and others will net some crazy lineups. Nascar is the same.

Hey, could you discuss lengthening the championship round to three races? What is your opinion on having a single winner take all race? In my opinion that just doesnt work for motorsports at all. I can live with the playoff format but not with as single championship race at one track and track type. To me it cheapens the championship! So many things can go wrong, especially outside of your team's control that no single race should chose a champion in my mind. Three would be great. They will still get their "game 7 moments" with a three race championship round, and no one track will chose the winner. Anyways, would love to hear your thoughts and see the community's thoughts and reactions.

Where was the race with group qualifying where the train of cars puttered around and everyone but Austin Dillon got the checkered before starting their fast lap? The other one I like to refer to for this was World Touring (WTCC) at Salzburgring in 2013. Another slipstreaming track, nobody wants to be the lead car, and the train idled around until it was too late to start a lap before the checkered flag dropped.

I personally not a really big fan of "Group Qualifying"-type format, not just on NASCAR but also on most motorsport disciplines because the lap maybe a bit compromised by another cars. I personally prefer the "Single-car"-type qualifying format because it's just the driver, machine, track and the clock. Nothing else matters, no interferences from other cars.
