*Building primitive traps is an important survival skill for intermediate and long term scenarios. They are also just plain fun to construct. Of all the traps I have learned to construct the Mojave Scissor Trap is among my favorites. Please remember that trapping with primitive traps is illegal outside of a true survival scenario so please study these for your knowledge only and make sure to disassemble any traps you construct. We had a book while I was in Special Forces. It was called the "Green Beret Gourmet". It was written as humor, but they were actual recipes. I remember the one about "Paddy rat delight". Gut, clean, wrap in a large banana leaf with an herbs or spices and bake while buried in a coal pit. You wouldn't want to know some of it's contents...

It seems like there could be multiple inlets in a circle around the trigger and bait stick since they could be independently attached to the spring mechanism. The loops could be tied together in the center and they dont have to be loops, just a constraint (even square) to hold the V portion and contain the animal once trapped. I can also see this trap scaled up for larger game using log counter weights... I like this trap.

Terrific instructional video. Just subscribed. Looking at learning how to build and actually practice building and setting traps like this. One question. When you anchor down the scissor with your cordage. Instead of tying it off, could you drill a hole through the stick and tie it off that way? Just thinking.

Very nice demo! I've seen a couple of videos catching rats & skunks. If scaled properly, do you think I could get away with using the awl on my knife to make a couple of holes at the top of the scissors and feed the cordage through? My gut says that it would depend upon the wood.

whenever i use this i cant ever seem to get the bait stick to hold up the toggle stick. Im thinking its from to much tension. does it need to be a very strong spring

I always masons twine for primitive traps bc I’m paranoid that the tar smell of bank line will ward off the prey. Have you had any problems with that? I don’t know how you’d tell really as I know it’s more about numbers of traps set than anything else. Just something I’ve always been paranoid about.

That thought has crossed my mind as well. I have not found that to be the case though. Like you said though, it really is hard to know for sure. Numbers really are the key to success for these traps. 10:1 is the general success ratio. Thanks for tuning in and commenting.

Does the “bank line” hold knots well?

It is fantastic for knots. It is the very best in my opinion. Since it is tarred, it tends to bind on itself and hold really well. It is also top choice for a bow drill cord.

I hope it is working well for you Jake! At the end in the added clip, I did have on the Western Rise Anorak. In the earlier clips I was wearing the Fjallraven Anorak 10. They are both very nice jackets. For the money, the Western Rise is hard to beat. I have it listed on my Amazon Storefront. The Fjallraven Anorak 10 is in a league of it's own. I got a GREAT deal on it and couldn't turn it down. I had been eying them for 2 years almost. It is among my favorite garments I own easily. I appreciate you tuning in my friend.

All these survival traps seem to require miles of cordage and way too much time. You can't beat the simple snare. No cordage, go to deadfalls, but they are time consuming too. You will need all your time to locate edible plants.

You could use apple, carrot, lettuce or any natural food source that they feed on in your local area. A little peanut butter is always an attention getter for small game if you carry it in a kit.

I hate anyone using traps it's cruel and unusual punishment for the animals how you you acted if someone set a trap to catch you in it that slowly kills you . It's wrong. Only in life or Death situation's maybe .but just to do it because you can or just for the fur hell no I f I seen someone doing that I would sneak up to them and use a baseball bat on them

This is demonstrated only as a last resort survival measure. If you were in such a situation and were starving or if your loved one or child were starving, I can imagine you and anyone else would be glad to have the knowledge and to use it. I don't think sneaking up behind someone with a baseball bat puts anyone on the moral high ground,

Gary, so if you find yourself in a 'life or death' situation, it is only a "maybe" that you would choose to eat and survive? It kind of narrows down the choices of 'life' or 'death'....you're choosing your own demise.
