Blacksmithing is dangerous. I've been burned, had my fingers squished, got stuck by metal splinters and been bludgeoned by stray pieces of metal... Wear your PPE and be safe out there. (Kids... do not try this without parental supervision.)

Annealing is defined as making a metal softer it doesn't matter what material... For copper if it's quenched (Cooled rapidly in oil, water, etc) will anneal it. For steel or other ferrous materials quenching will change the iron structure in the material and will harden it. It's all about the time to cool and specifics of the material. Not all materials are the same, the process to anneal may not be identical. So... science.
