Hot mill gloves something you suggest many times are well worth having as you have said before, I'm still loving the silver pen, something I learned from you. Yes we learned many things from you and safety Thanks for your teachings Something I taught myself buy worn out tong for really cheap and remove the rivet and keep the better half as a patern for your build making the weight and length as you desire.

Nobody I associate with knows _anything_ about blacksmithing. So I have to be very specific if I ask for something, if I asked for hammers and tongs I would receive a claw hammer and bbq tongs. So I i simplified it this year. *BAR STOCK.* I gave them a list of carbon steels and other metals and told them any bars or rods of those types would be appreciated.

I've been using my ISOtunes Pro 2 for almost 2 years now and I'm sad to say that they're starting to fall apart in just the same way the a friend of mine's did. He is on his... 4th pair now, in about two years, having tried various models that've failed in various ways. The audio quality is great and the noise reduction is pretty decent, but it might be worth looking at other brands, too. ISOtunes customer service is great, tho!

I watch a news program called "The Five." Today was a Thanksgiving Special where they answered only fan mail. Former U.S. Congressman Harold Ford Jr. is an intermittent co-host. Today when the question was asked about study habits. 4 of the 5 said they needed quiet to concentrate to study or do things when focus was needed. I'm the same. Mr. Ford was the only one who said he preferred listening to music while studying, specifically law, in his case no pun intended. He said of himself maybe I'm just weird. The thing I find interesting is how he described it similarly to what you said about listening to music. Without the music in his earphones/earbuds he gets distracted into thinking of other things to do/get done and it's harder to focus on what's in front of him. I think you're both weird.. jj 😄😄 Hope you had a Happy Thanksgiving 🦃 as well. ✝️🕊️

I just bought a Vevo single burner propane forge you had featured in a video. I can't find that video again, so I have to ask: The instructions on the refractory cement says to mix it with water in a ratio of 10:3. My question is: which is the 10 and which is the 3? And how long does it have to sit after I apply it? Thanks for all the great information you provide us beginners in forging. We're really enjoying your videos.

I have both the Vevor anvil and forge. A note on the anvil, don't let the blue paint fool you. It's there to cover up the Bondo filler used. Not that I have any serious issues with the pocks on the horn, just know like John said that they may not be the best quality but they are very functional. I love my anvil and forge.
@Skinflaps_Meatslapper
@Skinflaps_Meatslapper 6 ай бұрын
Yeah they're all swiss cheese under that paint and body filler. Any time you see paint on a hammering surface, it's hiding something. If you're feeling really industrious, you can grind the horn down to solid steel and it won't take a whole lot of steel off in the process. The casting method produces those voids on the surface but it's pretty solid underneath. Mine came with a nice little crack on the edge of the anvil, I marked the end of the crack and it hasn't spread or given me problems yet.
@RyanBarnes
@RyanBarnes 6 ай бұрын
@@Skinflaps_Meatslapper might have to do that! I've done a decent job cleaning the horn getting rid of most of the casting lines and such. Was thinking too if I find any bad holes I could just do a little welding job and grind it clean.
@Skinflaps_Meatslapper
@Skinflaps_Meatslapper 6 ай бұрын
@@RyanBarnes I considered filling the holes with weld, I just didn't want to risk affecting the heat treatment of the surrounding area. The surface is hardened a bit and it continues down for a while as it's a smaller anvil and quenches faster, so I occasionally checked hardness as I went. Maybe with the right filler you could maintain the same hardness or better, but with the kind of voids these anvils have even a mild steel fill is better than no fill at all.

Love Ken', ,buy all my plans there. BUT, I have been unable to properly cut the V into the V-Bit & Bolt Jaw Tongs. I know it's Operator Error, but I can't figure out where I'm going wrong. I left the 2nd blank set soak in the forge for quite a while before trying to chisel the "V" and still couldn't get the deep "V" as Ken's how-to video shows. Any help greatly appreciated!

Hello and thanks for the video. I do blacksmithing as a hobby and sometimes use it as a way to get Christmas gifts, this year I’m tackling a long time grudge of mine with the project, can openers, they are flimsy horrible gadgets that never work as intended, and i know a lot of friends and family that think similarly, so this year Christmas gifts are going to be forged can openers, but here is the catch, I have not been able to find a good blueprint or instructions to work it out. I have a “working” prototype that works similar to scissors, its got a circumference with a sharp point in the middle and a moving arm with another point that cuts the can, while it is a viable option it works for just one size of cans, and I don’t like it. Do you have any idea how to tackle this problem?
@Skinflaps_Meatslapper
@Skinflaps_Meatslapper 6 ай бұрын
Why not incorporate the working elements of a P38/P51 into a larger handheld version? They were super simple stamped pieces but their biggest drawback for everyday use is their compact size. Something with a larger handle and blade might function a lot better, and it wouldn't be difficult to replicate the cutty bits (though you might want to use carbon steel for that). Another idea would be to make a simple u-spring (like a spring handle swage) that you hold on the open end where the dies would be. The bottom side of the spring has the tooth to grab the rim of the lid while the top side of the spring has the blade, placed roughly halfway between the bend and the handle. Put the tooth under the rim against the side of the can and the cutter on top of the lid, then squeeze to puncture a hole, then repeat until you've made your way around. Simpler and easier operation compared the rocking motion needed with a P38/P51 style opener. You could even replace the bottom tooth that holds the can with a complete circle instead, so you could drop the can into it rather than making sure a tooth grabs the rim of the lid. It would still function with smaller cans, but it wouldn't be "hands off", so to speak. The u-spring could also be replaced with a pivoting joint, but you'd have to manually open it each time unless you added some kind of additional spring to it, which could also be forged but the complexity of the project would go up as well.
