Would you mind if I ask you a question. Just picked up a piece of steel today from an old paper press. A big machine. Want to use it as an anvil as that is so far the best I got. It is only around 5 KG and was a piece that attaches on to a large cross beam on the press. The top side of my future anvil has a slot in it to hold some kind of axle or other moving part, so very hard. The bit that I plan to use is the bottom of that "future anvil". Will I need to harden it temper it? Hope you don't mind. Cheers.
@torbjornahman7 жыл бұрын
Impossible to know really, since you don't know the alloy. It probably is hardened already. My biggest concern is it might be too hard and brittle for an anvil. Stuff like that probably isn't made for pounding on. Just be careful and use it! If it chips around edges you might want to temper it back.
@workwithnature7 жыл бұрын
Cool thanks for getting back to me on it. Will watch out and try hitting the sides with the hammer. If it does what color would you go for a purple or brown. New to this.
@torbjornahman7 жыл бұрын
Probably have to do some sort of tests, but I would have to say at least blue, around 280-300 C. Better safe than sorry...

Really great to find your videos and I admire your passion for iron works. I'd like to recommend you to make "Homi", Korean hand rake. It's such a versatile tool that you can do not only raking but shoveling, picking, flattening, cutting etc. It looks very simple but it's not an easy task to make its curve of head. I hope to see TA Homi soon. Thanks for your wonderful videos.

Perhaps your most interesting forging. It looks positively organic. With its claws up it has a lot of the Australian Funnel Web spider about it. Certainly your weeds must be trembling in their roots. A most splendid and entertaining piece of smithing. John Warner, Murrumbateman, Australia

Recently started blacksmithing, you make the skill look easy. I Admire your anvil, trying to find an older Kohlswa is very difficult here in Northern CA. Your videos are indeed a pleasure to watch as there is a good mix of layout footage including occasional visual descriptions, forging, a peaceful break and a wrap up of the finished work. Your video format works for me anyway, well done.
