I have just started out as a hobby blacksmith and this showed me it’s not all about hitting the steel hard with a big hammer, the finesse you used is a true inspiration to me. Thank you. You now have a new subscriber.

I forged yesterday one of these, from a square bar (8mm thick) with twists in it. Nice job, clean. I got tingles during this video. Blacsmith asmr.
@workingwithiron5 жыл бұрын
I have seen that done, i was going to do it from square but thought id give it a go in round first, does the pin move well enough on a twist? i suppose it would add a bit of friction to help it stay in place. If only the blower wasnt as loud it would be perfect asmr!
@grey_hound13085 жыл бұрын
@@workingwithiron There is a little bit of friction, but the pin moves without a problem. I would love to see your video on this type of brooch. The blower was not loud, at least for me. I got used to it by now. :D

Everything is heat defined with bends. I did this a bit cold but i knew how it would act so i could work with it. one tip is, get the taper as graceful and smooth as you possibly can before even bending up. Im gonna add this to the list of explanation videos as i cannot type it, i have to show it as my vocabulary is nowhere near good enough to explain what i do in text.

Very smooth work and thank you. I am new to blacksmithing, and watching you work has slowed me down and let me work with greater precision. I was just beating everything to death. I am sort of a vicarious apprentice. Thanks again Nathan
@workingwithiron5 жыл бұрын
No. Thank You, you have just made it worth my time. thats the thing, Its not all about beating it to death as i see a lot of other smiths do, there is a time and place for that but not constantly. i want to do a few vids on general techniques and tips that i see nobody talking about in this craft but it is how i keep my work the way it is. I think it would help a lot of folk out.

A pair of needle nose pinchers would be perfect for @4:19. They look pretty much like the ones you're using with one key difference, the tips are bent inwards by a smidge. Excellent for forming fence ornaments, i found.

Looks like it would be good for a wool blanket to be used as a warm cloak over the shoulders. Only that it would create holes.

Yes! Exactly that! It does create holes but in loosely woven fabric it closes up easily enough.

Brilliant forging my friend! Well demonstrated as well. I've been thinking of making some of these myself. Is that a beeswax finish? I use linseed oil for tools, but I'm looking for something a little "cleaner" for personal items such as this.
@workingwithiron5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Nick! It is a wax finish, a company called Briwax, or you could get some renaissance wax, its a hard durable finish and a lot cleaner than Oil. Just put on at a black heat, leave it for a day then buff with a cloth, works a treat!

Why use the fuller on the pin connection ring?
@workingwithiron5 жыл бұрын
It helps with the bending as it wont convex or concave which saves trying to correct the loop when its wrapped around. and adds decoration.

I'm not a smith myself, what is the wax for? Is it for durability?
@workingwithiron2 жыл бұрын
The wax creates a protective layer to prevent rusting. Applying hot soaks the wax in a lot deeper as the surface is quite porous so helps it get in all the nooks and crannies. Hope that helps 👍

I have absolutely no idea how those things work. I assume you're not stabbing a hole in the blanket with the spike, but I can't see past that.
@workingwithiron5 жыл бұрын
The spike goes through the blanket, it only works with loosely woven materials to not create a hole permanantly, then the brooch is spun and locks itself in. i have no blanket so couldnt show it on film unfortunately
