Blacksmithing - Forging a Viking Carving Axe

In this video i try to forge a carving axe for the first time.
The axe is inspired by the arjeplog axe, but as usual when i make something it turns out not as i planned :P Its made out of wrought iron, and the piece was actually pretty bad so there are a few delaminations here and there, nothing on the blade that would disturb the actual function however.
hope you enjoyed the video, see you in the next one!

A rolled over 9 shape is not traditional, it's modern. A figure eight ( 8 ) shape with the fold being made central and the best bit of steel money can buy inserted as the bit IS traditional. Only places I find Germanic traditional axes being made still are in England, it seems. I'd love to find somewhere closer to home but they just don't exist, everyone does the modern 9 fold rather than the 8 fold with a bit insert.

@@bashkillszombies I work as a professional bladesmith and are specialized im making historical accurate axes. The only way is to do that is to examine historical finds. I have extensive knoledge of viking era axes and medival axes and other tools. I can tell you one thing the asymetrical fold is the most comon way to make axes from migration era to high medival era. The bowtie or symetrical is a much more modern way to make axes starting around the 1700:s. I have studyed alot of viking and medival axes and 90% are made with asymetrical fold the rest is punched. Don't know where you get the figure 9 and 8 theorys but that Is compleatly wrong there are tons of archiological finds tha sais so.

What is the purpose of using the pointed side if the hammer as opposed to the blunt side when moving the metal? Thanks in advance for any info. Im new to forging.
3 жыл бұрын
It helps drawing out the material faster. It also helps if its a tight spot you need to forge where the face of the hammer cant reach /nils

@DERWALDRUFT

The question maybe sounds self explaining but is the unsymetrical welding easyer because of the smaller area that has to be weldet for the eye? Made two axes using the sym weld - that was tough.
2 жыл бұрын
There are pros and cons to both. The asymetrical fold gives you the oppurtunity to do more complicated things on the one side without having to recreate it on the other side
2 жыл бұрын
Which one is harder? To me they are equal. The asymetrical need alot of precisipn in thr actual weld
@DERWALDRUFT
@DERWALDRUFT 2 жыл бұрын
@ what is better - maybe that is a matter of personal preferences. The unsy weld maybe avoids Cold shuts and delaminations a little bit more. Otherwise, keep it up!
2 жыл бұрын
Well as I said it depends what kind of axe you are making. If you were to make a forest hatchet, I would recommend the symetrical fold. But if you were to make one like this Id go with the asymetrical fold, since tou get more liberty in shaping one side of the axe before the weld
@johngregerson5984
@johngregerson5984 Жыл бұрын
Are there advantages to doing the asymmetrical wrap instead of the symmetrical?
Жыл бұрын
Yes. You get more freedom in pre forming the blade. With the symmetrical fold you want both sides to be the same. But with the asymmetrical you can do what ever you want with one of the sides
