Stephen Norrington’s 1998 smash-hit, Blade, was an important movie for Marvel. It was the first blockbuster adaptation of one of the comic publisher’s characters and showed that what worked on the page could very well work on the big-screen too, presuming you have the right creative team involved. It helped make Wesley Snipes one of the biggest action stars of his day, and soon a sequel was put into development. With Norrington bailing to make The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (a decision he would regret), the director’s chair was left vacant. New Line levelled up when they signed Guillermo del Toro, who was still relatively early in his career, to direct the sequel. Using it as a bit of a training ground before tackling Hellboy, del Toro elevated the sequel by emphasizing the horror aspects while not shying away from the carnage.
In this fun sequel, Wesley Snipes gives a much looser performance as Blade, which also brings Kris Kristofferson’s Whistler back from the dead to be a mentor/sidekick once again. Some of del Toro’s favourite actors, including Ron Perlman and Luke Goss, have roles. The premise is fantastic, as Blade has to team with an elite unit of vampires to eliminate a more significant threat.
The film was a box office success that was a bit overshadowed by the fact that 2002 also saw the release of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man, but it remains a perennial favourite of many Marvel movie fans. We dig into its making in this episode of Marvel Movies Revisited, which is written, narrated and edited by Kier Gomes.

People may not agree with me, but I dream of Del Toro directing a stand alone Fantastic Four movie, he's been related to many made and unmade superhero productions, and he's definitely a sci-fi and vfx proven expert with a great amount of imagination to create the most appealing, terrifying and surreal worlds, as well as consistent and humane stories. He's the perfect combination for a dysfunctional team of scientist and spacetime explorers.

Both movies are awesome but Blade 1 just pulls ahead by an inch for me. The opening scene in Blade is just bad assed and one of the best character intros in cinema history. Blade is still my favorite super hero, while skeptical, curious to see what Mahershala Ali brings to the role when the MCU version comes out.

@Dirk Platinum I disagree. I think it’s very much a del Toro film and if you aren’t into them it’s not for you. I do like 1 a lot though. Blade 1 was great for 1998 and Blade 2 for 2002; they both are very dialed in for the time. I can’t stand Trinity.

Wesley Snipes will always be Blade. He was a pretty good actor throughout, but Blade was his role and it's glaringly obvious no one can replace him. Just like Arnold as Terminator. You simply can't replace that. EDIT: The first Blade movie will always be the best Marvel Movie ever made. Low budget. Dark. Gritty. Just like the first TMNT

One of Luke Goss's memorable performances came in this movie . Stephen Dorff as Deacon Frost was great but Luke Goss as the tragic vampire prince turned Reaper villain Jared Nomak was a shade better . Blade 2 in that respect was better than blade 1 . Prince Nuada in Hellboy 2 was the other Luke Goss's memorable role . But blade 1 has the most memorable line describing any Marvel hero "The power of an Immortal . The soul of a human . The heart of a hero" .

I really liked this movie when I saw it in the theatre. Bought the soundtrack and eventually the DVD. One criticism if you’re review is that there was another e scene after Nysa’s death. Blade tracks down the vampire he releases after being lead to whistler. He stabs him in a peep show booth. I really like the addition of this little scene. Because Nysa’s death was a bummer. This was more of a crowd pleasing “that’s our Blade” sort of note to end on.

The fun fact about “The Prodigy” was cool to hear. The Prodigy has been my fave band since 97. Blade is one of my all time favorites movies. Recently in rewatching the film I revisited the soundtracks dance track like “confusion”. In my mind I kept saying to myself the only thing that was missing was The Prodigy score in the film. I kept hearing it in my mind. Also given the era and time musically. Its no wonder why this movie has such a large place in my heart. Now imagine the a rave scene or even a cameo with ft Maxim Reality, Keith Flint, Liam and Wesley as Blade. #Everything!!!!!!!

I can imagine what the new "Blade" movie will be like. First, you'll have to have watched several streaming TV series. Then, you'll have to rewatch several other MCU movies, especially some minor character who is on-screen for a few seconds, because they'll be major characters in the narrative. Then, there will be post-credit scenes to set up the next in the series. But first, you'll have to.... and the cycle repeats. How naive it seems now to have a "stand-alone movie".

The 2nd and 3rd are good for what they are (Jessica Biel and Ryan Reynolds setting the screen ablaze with their hotness in Trinity👀) but the original feels like a vampire movie with action thrown in and the latter two are the reverse. I don’t hate Blade 2. But at the same time I don’t consider to be that good. I felt most of the fight scenes were too reliant on cgi. Other than that I found this instalment fun and entertaining. I love the twist near the end where Scud was revealed to be a traitor and Blade’s awareness of it.

Blade two was far better than 1, the love the director had was just so powerful that it showed through.

I love both movies but to me, Blade 2 is even more awesome because has better characters, a lot more action and the absolutely badass final fight between Blade and Nomak imho.

Last week I saw Blade 3, now I’ve seen all 3 of them. The first and the second movie are the best in my opinion. Blade 3 wasn’t all that great, but the first one is the best in my opinion

I hope to see a new actor who can embody the Blade character with authenticity and fresh blood. Like Batman (Bale). Just needs the right ingredients: timing + budget + script + director + lack of studio interference + casting + …. Magic 8 ball?

I swear Del Toro's imagination of creatures and worlds are just as much magical and cool like GRR Martin"s or Tolkien's. Maybe even better (for me) he only missed with a few movies for me, but i love all the others ( i still want that Hellboy 3 from him, sadly will never happen) I saw blade 2 first when i was 18, and i loved it top to bottom, but now at 38 i can love the movie even better with all my experience in life, and see things in the movie that my 18 year old me wouldnt. My english is not perfect, sry ;)
