Spider-Man : The Sam Raimi Classic That Started It All

While 2000’s X-Men was arguably the movie that made Marvel characters finally come to life on the big screen (after taking a backseat to DC for years), it was 2002’s Spider-Man, directed by Sam Raimi, that proved just how good a movie like this could be…and how profitable. Hollywood had been trying to launch a Spider-Man film for years, with James Cameron coming close to doing a massive version with Leonardo DiCaprio. In the end, Sony made an unconventional choice - Sam Raimi.
At this point, he was best known for his horror movies, including The Evil Dead trilogy and Darkman, but he had started to branch out by this point. He made the Kevin Costner romance For the Love of the Game and a well-received thriller called A Simple Plan. And, given that he had shown such a flair for action with Darkman, he proved to be a great choice. An even more off-kilter pick was Tobey Maguire, then best known for playing sensitive teens in The Cider House Rules, Wonder Boys, and The Ice Storm, to play Peter Parker. Again, the less obvious choice was the right one.
While fans had some minor complaints (organic web-shooters?), overall, they loved this franchise launch, which also featured other iconic performances, such as Willem Dafoe as Green Goblin, Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane, and James Franco as Harry Osborn. Twenty Years later, Dafoe and Maguire have found their way back into the MCU, so let’s look back at the film that started it all!

@@Mayor_Of_Eureka17 "quality impactful flicks" like what? Batman and Top Gun are only 2 movies from this year that were brilliant, but even those don't reach the heart of Spiderman. You'll bring up NWH but if you watch it without nostalgia you can clearly see the flaws all over the movie.

This movie also had a lot of post 9/11 emotional reactions, being set in New York. I think that's one thing that watching it in 2002 is different from now. The freshness of the attacks and the desire for heroes. As young people were signing up for the military, a lot of the ethical questions were super relevant. It really reflected the pain and the idealism of that time.

This still my favorite Spider-Man movie. Part of it is how much it feels like a modern version of the Stan Lee/Steve Ditko/John Romita comics condensed into a movie. And Willem Dafoe was amazing in it (as well as No Way Home). He & JK Simmons were the standouts.

I have been a Spider-Man fan for my whole life. Watched Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends as a child (also re-runs of the live-action series from the 70's), then started reading the comics, watched the 90's animated series as a teenager; so when this film came out, I was naturally very excited to see Spidey debut on the silver screen, finally, after so many years (at that time the character was turning 40). Even back then I had some minor gripes with this film (the organic web-shooters, Spidey's wise-cracking humor either largely missing or poorly delivered), but still I was very much happy and grateful for this very first Spider-Man film. Willem Dafoe was simply brilliant as Norman Osborn/Green Goblin, JK Simmons as JJJ too (they still are, as proven in Spider-Man: No Way Home). The CGI has pretty much aged not too well, which seems to be the case with a lot of these early 00's films, but thankfully this is not like a Star Wars prequel film in that regard.

So glad this one and not the Cameron/Decaprio Spider-Man happened. But, it would be interesting if all these movies that stray so far from source material had been made but with tweaks so it was an original character. I bet more than half would've at least been cult classics. Saw this when it came out opening weekend even I think. It was the 1st time since Reeve's Superman back in the 70s that I was awed feeling I was actually seeing what the "real" superhero would look like in action (the swinging especially). Nicholas Hammond will always be MY Spider-Man, but boy is this the most powerful one experience-wise. Didn't like their take on Osborn beingthe stereotypical "split personality = violent", but they picked a perfect actor to play GG. He even looks naturally like the Ditko and Romita drawing (though shame he was helmeted, but makes sense). And so happy with the respect they showed this character and his fans in the MCU's No Way Home. I hope DC does the same level or better with Keaton.

@mortal667

actually norman killed his lab tech cause that guy said that the serum was not ready and they would need to "take it back to formula" this movie was amazing, not only because of the underdog character discovering power and the bad things that come with it, but also because it felt real and not a goddamn cgi overload, which sadly mcu has slowly but surely turned into. it might seem corny at many times, but that just adds to the nostalgia of going back to our memories which even though they might be cheesy, bring smiles to our faces.

Wow 20 years since this movie came out. Along with Blade, X Men this movie really changed the way comic book movies were presented in more of a serious light. Also although Tobey Maguire was not as age appropriate Tom Holland would be as Peter Parker. This is the only time where both Uncle Ben & Aunt May are age appropriate. As with Andrew Garfield & Tom Holland series these characters would slowly become younger.

You didnt mention Nicholas Hammond - Yes am aware was initially tv, but there were 2 cinematic releases. Here in UK I was excited to see Spiderman at the cinema when I was a kid! yes It was cringy, poor special effects etc, not taken seriously at the time, but that was the 1970/s for you! It really irritates me that people think Spiderman in movies only started in the 2000's! It didn't, It started in the 1970's with NIcholas Hammond! He should be worthy of at least a mention. I though it would have been really cool and missed oppurtunity in no way home, if he had a cameo as an old man appears, claiming also to be peter parker! - Nicholas Hammond is still alive after all! Would have been a true nod us older generation would have appreciated.
