Deckard (Harrison Ford) makes Rachael (Sean Young) cry when he proves she is a replicant.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
In this futuristic science fiction drama, two firms are both on the working overtime to see who can be first to perfect a new and groundbreaking invention -- a technology that can perfectly recreate human tissue, allowing people to be replicated at will. One of the companies is a small, cutting-edge concern, while the other is a major multinational conglomerate, and in a world where such companies control the legal and judicial system (hey, are you sure this is science fiction?), beating them to the punch can have deadly consequences. The larger firm sends a team of thugs to destroy the smaller company's offices, just as inventor Ludo (Michael St. Gerard) is using himself as a guinea pig for his final tests on the replication system; things go haywire during the assault, and soon Ludo finds himself chasing his own manmade evil twin. Replikator also stars Ned Beatty, Brigitte Bako, and Ilona Staller, the latter better known as Cicciolina, the Italian adult film star who was elected to that nation's Parliament.

According to some interviews made to Sean Young, those were real tears of sorrow. She used a memory of a recently deceased relative to get into character for that scene. Sean considers this to be her best acting bit from the film...

Great scene. Deckard is as cold as they come. It took Rachel to make him realize he's no more human than she is. Humanity still has a lot to learn.

He's cold because he has to be. It's his job. Do you think exterminators cry and weep for every termite or rat they kill? He's not a bad man or inhuman, he just needs to make a living in a cold and harsh society like everyone else. And in the original theatrical version Deckard's narration specifies that he originally quit being a Blade Runner because he'd "had a bellyful of killing" so it's likely that even before this he was beginning to have his doubts about the nature of his job and the morality of retiring replicants.

By the end he rediscovers his humanity and tries to save a person he was supposed to kill. It doesn't matter if he's trying to make a living, it's still wrong.

I was around during those days. Went to see this movie during its first run in the theaters. I remember my own reaction very well. That scene where she first appears. None of us had ever seen or heard of Sean Young before. As soon as the camera closed in on her face I remember saying "What a goddess" to my buddies in the theater.

That's the point. After a few years of existence, replicants learn to have full emotions of their own. THat's why they were programmed to die after four years. They gave her memories so that she could learn emotions faster and so that they could control her. But I agree, it's sad

Replicants are supposed to have emotions in the movie, just not the same sensitivity as humans, maybe a bit slower and less sympathetic ... thats why the Voigt Kampff test ask questions like how they would do in embarrassing situations or sympathetic situations, to see if they respond the same way as normal humans ..the empathy response test .. When Roy Batty saved Deckard, his persecutor's life, it shows that even replicants can have very real emotions of compassion towards other people's life .. I would not use the word "learned" on how they develope emotions, I think its more like "enlightenment" .. humanistic compassionate emotional response to other people's miseries is an enlightenment of sort .. you don't learn it like a skill, you become enlightened about it naturalistically by subconsciously feeling it through emotional experiences ..

no ... the sequel is a let down, the visuals are superficially grand but very emotionally hollow, atmospherically not as evocative .. and the story is like a sequel to The Matrix .. I'm not really interested in Blade Runner becoming a franchise about the rebelliance movement because it makes it lose it unique-ness as a stand alone movie about what it means to be human vs manufactured intelligence, don't turn it into another Star Wars/Matrix style franchise please...

@@baalgar5530 2049 is a great film. Audiences, fans and critics love it. It won 2 Oscars for Cinematography and Visual Effects, which were both stunning. The only negative side was the box office. Like it predecessor, didn't do too well at the box office but has now become a classic over the years and 2049 was named as one of the best movies of 2017.

I've just realised that the scene is not just about Rachel. Deckard is hearthless and Rachel is so emotional. Who's the human and who's the replicant there?

Deckard is not that heartless in this scene .. You must remember that there were some frictions during their meeting at Tyrell's building earlier on .. she asked him if he's ever retired a human by mistake, and Deckard gave her a look of being insulted that she should question his professionalism as a blade runner ... (although Rachel asked that question not to insult Deckard but because she was already suspecting that she might be a replicant and was worried that Deckard may kill her thinking the same thing) .. And Deckard has never met a replicant that is as gentle as Rachel because he's used to hunting down only violent replicants in his career ... thats why he was acting like a d*** towards her ... But as soon as he notice that Rachel is not the typical strong violent type of replicant he's used to seeing, you can see that he was immediately regretful of being so straight forward with her and tried to soften his tone towards her ...

I disagree; put yourself in Deckard's shoes. He has to kill his emotions by treating replicants with disdain, because he has to hunt and KILL them. His actions and attitude help to disassociate himself from them and dehumanize them, to save his own sanity. This is a very human thing to be able to do; we all have the potential to be heartless monsters. In this case also however, at this point he has not seen much evidence that they are capable of feelings and humanity - androids, and nothing more. However his encounters with Rachel and final encounter with Roy change that. So what is it to be human?

+Adam Dow key word "supposed" ...Capt Bryant did say that after a few years they will develope feelings which makes them indistinguishable from human being but humans did not expect them to become so emotional earlier than expected, and even more so than humans themselves like .. Tyrell said "MORE HUMAN THAN HUMAN", I think Tyrell succeeded ..

I think Sean Young was wonderful in this movie. The scenes with her and Harrison brought a lot of emotion and I thought their chemistry worked great. There are those who've said they didn't, but maybe they're forgetting that it's supposed to a be a little awkward for them, seeing as how they don't know what to exactly feel for the other? Most viewers see them as attractive people, so why wouldn't they see that in each other, while being cautious given the circumstances of who and what they really may be. My heart breaks a little for Sean when see finally realizes the truth of what she is. Great Film...

I'm not sure why Sean Young was so supernaturally good in this movie. Was it her? Was it Ridley Scott? For f***'s sake, she was handed a scene where she finds out her life is a lie, but not just that, she's a ROBOT that thinks it's human and finds out it's a robot, and she has no lines whatsoever where she says what she's feeling. And all of the main characters reactions are based purely off of her face. And she absolutely NAILED it. She nailed it SO much that you not only don't realize how far-fetched this scene is, you totally feel crushed for her, but yet she still comes off completely like an android, AND it makes you actually hate Deckard because he didn't react ENOUGH to how crushed she was. He couldn't match what she put across...AND HE GOT TO TALK THE WHOLE TIME. ...and she has multiple scenes like this. Where did this come from? How did she do it?!

If you look at her actions, and life later, it seems like she had the perspective to understand the emotions of self doubt, putting on a good face, insecurity and being naive/inexperienced. It made her awesome for this role.

This scene remains Sean Young's best acting of her career to date ... it says a lot about Ridley Scott's ability too to bring many actors' ability to their peak best not just for Sean Young but also for Rutger Hauer, Harrison Ford (at least among his best acting roles), and a bunch of other people who played Tyrell, Gaff, Pris and so on ...

Rachael is my favorite character in this film. She's damn near the only person (you could put quotes around that word or not) in Blade Runner that is legitimately good. The beautiful irony that she is perhaps the most human character here.

I think the great thing about blade runner there is no true good guy or bad guy there all (ironically) human in the end of the day. But yeah Rachel (Sean young) is definitely the most innocent of the characters.

The whole movie is a series of breath takingly filmed scenes from start till finish ... I really love the sequence where Deckard chase down Zhora ending up with her lying on the pavements with the tear rolling down her cheeks too, and also the scene where Roy finally met Tyrell, their conversation was epic ... and of course when Roy chases down Deckard through the run-down towering apartment ... even the in-between scenes of Deckard eating sushi or flying through the smoky buildings are beautiful to watch ...

This in my opinion really shows the potential for sci-fi. Using imaginative futures we can explore states of perception and emotion that we cannot imagine now. Blade Runner asks: how would it feel to learn that all your memories are fake? The result is a soul-crushing yet oddly beautiful moment, one of my favourite scenes ever. Villeneuve's sequel, a film I'd highly recommend, flips the equation in an interesting way. Spoiler alert, but at a certain point it asks the question: "how would it feel to learn that the memories you thought were fake were actually real?" While a completely different emotional response, it makes for another fascinating experience. I think the new film doesn't get enough credit for how much it continues yet challenges the themes and moods of the original. In fact, it helped me understand the original in ways that I never did before.

Yeah .. also rewatch the meeting between Roy and his creator Tyrell, the whole dialogue and atmosphere is epic ! And see if you can catch the singular tear rolling down Zhora as she lays dead on the pavements ... and see how Leon tried to use the same method to kill Deckard as Roy did with Tyrell by poking through they eyes ... and catch the same replicant obsession with photographs also evident with Capt Bryant who actually had a lamp shade made of huge old photos of himself on his office desk, which implies even Cpt Bryant is likely a replicant ! And so on ... till this day I'm still discovering new meaningful mind-blowing symbolicisms stuffed into this mind blowing movie, how can a short 2 hr movie hold so much rich details intentionally placed strategically by one director ? This is a genius at his best ...

This movie is true masterpiece in showing the true danger of instilling humanity into machines. They simply suffer by being self aware through out their existence. Rachel's confusion sadness, the commando running and murdering just to end it. Its actually a deep and sad movie at the same time. They scan their emotions to make sure they are machines, but in reality they are just as human and traumatized beings.

yeah ... I think Sean Young is the most underrated actor in Blade Runner, everytime she appears in the movie I can see how naturalistic her portrayal of a very delicate replicant is, nothing forced or awkward about her acting, she really disappeared into the role of Rachel...

You can barely hear she's lost for breath the moment the truth hits... Her tear rolling from that sad stare... Her silence as she shows how she's struggling to process those emotions as a replicant... All the while looking mesmerizing and fragile... Sean gave pure acting gold in that scene!

this is one of those sad scenes that really brings you down, but in a way that makes you want to keep watching it because of how good it is. this is more than just an "ah, that sucks. i feel sorry for her" kind of scene. you really wish she didnt have to feel that way about her life.

I love the way she reacts. It's like she doesn't really know what she's feeling. She more or less freezes up and tears well up in her eyes. It's a good way of showing how imperfect her humanity is. She doesn't understand how to go about crying, it just happens.

Nah, I don't agree I think. She is emptional, but proud. He has just humiliated her and she now knows how naive she had always been. I know everyone praises the stunning visuals and music in this film but just the simple sounds of Deckard taking a drink, putting his glass down, the ruffle of papers and the clicking of Rachael's heels is extremely satisfying.

Having seen the original many years ago, I still have it right there in my Top 10 Sci-Fi films. This one is actually very close to the top due to the story line and the execution of it. Yes, Sean and Rutger really helped gel the overall plot as seen through these characters. I still love this film!

aww ... lets not forget Harrison Ford , he played his part to perfection too despite how unsympathetic the character is written to be, he was never arrogant but always struggling internally with retiring replicants, thats why he was shown to have left his job at the beginning of the movie in the first place ..

Deckard's choice of the memories that he mentions to her are so cruel. The first one is the one that just shames her. The second one is a traumatic one.

But now here is Rachel, so he is trying to diminish her to something less than a human. Like a teen boy rejecting his feelings.

So, the whole movie hinges on this scene. This the point that Deckard sees the replicants as human showing human emotions. Sean Young is so great in this scene. She is gutted that he shows her that her life as she knows it is a lie.

Ever watch a movie and fell head over heels for a character? That's how I felt for Rachel. Such a tragic and vulnerable character with her whole world crumbling around her, all the while opening up for her. [2049 spoiler] It's tragic she became like that spider from her memory. Taken by her very offspring.

Sean Young was magnificent in this scene. I haven't seen the movie, but this one clip draws me into the story so much. The way she portrays a standoffish nonchalant replicant, with a mixture of defensiveness then vulnerability and finally heartbreaking realization or acceptance--it's so sad and beautiful. Her performance here is so powerful and touching. Ford's character lines sound so douchey, it's disappointing.

The immense power of this scene has not diminished one jot in all these years. There will never be another film like this, we have watched Harrison Ford's finest hour. Intentionally or not Ford was denied any guidance from the director regarding his character so he had to actually act like Deckard and not the fall-back Ford that we see most of the time....I think? this is his only movie where he does not use his trademark 'wagging finger and gritted teeth' gesture.

I was there. With my high school friend. We were 16. Couldn’t understand it but I loved the cinematography. Only later in college watching it a couple more times did I get it.
