I LOVED how they portrayed both persons: Joi, being the most shy one, "feeling" all those things for the first time, really "feeling" the moment. The girl doing her job, but already used doing this. The "delay" between the eye contact, the "I'm not sure, but I want" versus "Let's do this" it's subtle, but with a very deep meaning Some kind of "jealousy" of Joi. The conflict of interests, she wanting to do this, but with feeling jealous. The girl opening the eye while kissing, while Joi is just enjoying really passionate. Awesome

I love the direction of this scene. The visual effects wizardry behind it is unlike anything I’ve ever seen before, but even beyond that, I adore how romantic and intimate it feels without ever coming close to feeling exploitative, IMO at least. The camera doesn’t linger on nudity or the physical sex itself, nor is it interested in titilation for the audience. Instead, Villeneuve chooses to linger on the simpler intimacies that are significant to K and Joi (and even Mariette, to an extent) - a touch, a caress, the removing of a coat, a kiss...the very things that they’ve never been able to experience and now finally can share. Paradoxically, it makes this scene far more romantic and meaningful for the audience member making the effort to empathize with both K and Joi. I also love that it’s Joi who’s the initiator of this, and K is the initially hesitant party. There’s a moment in his eyes where you can see the switch flip and he starts to realize, “Y’know, I think I actually like this...” And for Joi, for all of the “Everything you want to see/hear” stuff she’s advertised as, her action here feels like it goes above and beyond that level of programming. “I want to be real for you,” she says. It’s never made explicit how much of her companionship with K was genuine versus programming, and it can be debated endlessly, but for me, this was as much for her as it was K. And after all, what is love for another person but our own internal programming that lets us desire to see and make them happy? Who’s to say that what K and Joi has wasn’t real? It sure seemed like it was for them, and after this scene, I think they both can finally say that it also felt real.

It angers me how perfect this scene is. The outstanding soundtrack. The mind-blowing visual effects. The scene direction. The indifference to nudity and sex shots, and focus on intimacy. Lastly, the emptiness that we feel deep down from how much we experience K's connection to Joi, but realize she was designed to behave like that.
@islab2458
@islab2458 2 жыл бұрын
There’s definitely a case to be made about Joi’s agency being largely her own. Not to mention how little it matters: if free will exists for none of us, if we’re All simply behaving as “programmed” by nature/nurture, are the connections we make with others somehow less meaningful? Especially to them? Even if K is more “real” than Joi, what about His connection to Her? THAT is very real regardless of how “real” hers was to him. Regardless, I would say Joi is as human as any of us. Or at least, that facets of her program have the potential to be given the right person/circumstances to help her develop. I think K’s Joi was definitely as human as humans themselves.

@@islab2458 I think that's an interesting perspective, but remember the scene where he interacts with a Joi billboard after her death and it calls him "Joe", a name he had previously thought was something just between them. @anonymous4244
@anonymous4244 2 жыл бұрын
@@islab2458 main difference is though is that no human is “made” for another human. Yes we’re shaped by our experiences and our nature but they are so varied and change constantly that it makes us more distinct. JOI however is designed to be whatever her buyer wants her to be. And that buyer is always just one person. It’s true slavery, one where by design both joi and her owner are at peace, since a human slave is never inherently designed to satisfy their owner. Joe’s deepest wishes are reflected in her. And ironically her rebellion is merely another reflection of joe, merely another result of how she was designed. Even in her rebellion she is still a true slave. That’s why “You look like a good Joe” line is so lonely and that scene is so perfect. It hits this point home after all is said and done.

I think one under-appreciated aspect of this scene is how it is one more thing to mess with K's mind. This scene comes after he goes to the orphanage and discovers the horse from the memory he assumed was an implant... and then he goes to the memory center to find out that this implanted memory is of something that really happened... so his head's messed up as he no longer knows who/what he really is... and then he fails that baseline test. The scene has so much detail in it, the way we only see Joi's face when she's looking eye to eye with K, and her eyes being the pair who are reactive to the action unfolding while Mariette stares straight on, to how the 2 pair of hands stroke K in very different manners, Mariette being more of a grab and Joi more of a gentle holding of K's face. This is so beautifully unsynchronized.

@@juliom3775 It's probably difficult for her to maintain the sync, she may make it look fluid and natural but it's something challenging requiring much effort, hence why she told the girl to be quiet to allow her to sync in the beginning, so she doesn't do it when she doesn't have to. We know that in the movie Joi can definitely still materialise just fine when K is not looking, even when he is unconscious, even a giant version on a billboard ffs, so there's no limitation with the system.

Yeah this is what I love about this movie. This scene was the first love scene I’ve seen that gave me goosebumps! Seeing both “girls” melded together in this WILD connection between 3 vary different beings. K has been through so much and you feel happy for him & Joi & proxy lol. A good moment in what has up to this moment been chaos and stress… …and then you see Joi’s billboard and FUCK, you realize that it’s just another tool to keep K. To keep him where he ultimately doesn’t want to be anymore but unable to separate himself from what he’s been programmed to receive. I was so moved by the interaction between the 3 of them that I wasn’t ready for the flip and it made me blubber like a baby when I saw that advertisement. It’s an amalgamation of how I feel about most humans EVERYWHERE around the world. Spending most of their lives chained to a trick of their design. 😪

What's so tragic about this love story is that Joi is 100% a program giving him exactly what he wants, a real love. It wasn't a real love on her part, but she reflected to him exactly what he wanted and needed. He's a replicant, but his needs are human nonetheless. It's a beautiful. complex, and tragic storyline for a replicant be in love with an echo of himself, Joi. This was my favorite aspect of the whole movie.

The attention to detail in Joi’s behaviour makes her love for him look very, very convincing. Maybe it’s all programming, but maybe it has advanced to much, such that she becomes very very close to a real human. The same way our instincts drive us to be human sometimes without noticing, maybe her advancement makes her behave humanly without knowing it I want to hold to that version

Very interesting visual metaphor happening here, but I'm not seeing it talked about much. The context of the film is K learning he was born, and that he as a result has a soul. Before he was a shell, now there is a "ghost in the machine", as it were. This is visually represented by Joi and Marriette occupying the same space -- an ethereal being inside an artificial one.
@islab2458
@islab2458 2 жыл бұрын
Except he Wasn’t born. His “soul” is as metaphorical as a human’s and so every bit as real in the sense that it isn’t real at all in terms of it being a measurable, tangible thing, but something created by the choices we make throughout our lives. K garnered a “soul” when he made the choice to fight for a cause even after learning he was no one special at all. Also not a great take about Joi and Mariette: They’re both completely artificial, neither are “ethereal.” One is simply corporeal while the other isn’t. This would work metaphorically IF it actually represented K having a soul - but he doesn’t. So it doesn’t. I think the only depths you could reach here in terms of metaphor is that it’s just more reinforcement how little being “real” matters in this film. What K has with Joi is real though neither of them are human. What K has with Mariette isn’t “real” in terms of emotional connection, but her body is much more “real” than Joi’s. As others here have said, the sync being imperfect also shows how real Joi is because she’s imperfect in making such a connection that way as well, surpassing her own design. I think it’s showing just how human All of them are for working together to make a real connection happen, filling in the gaps for each other and making up for what each might be unable to fully give. None of them are “real,” but the connection they create together is more profound and real than the vast majority of humans will ever get to experience.

Intentionally or not, this scene is also about how imagination plays such a big role in our experience of sex. We imagine the person we are with as perfect, or more romantic, or a different version of them, or we imagine someone else altogether. So much of sex is about what's going on in our minds, and enjoying it is often a case of getting out of our heads and trying to be in the moment.

That is when we see she has developed some kind of passionate feelings towards K. She expresses she's only happy when she's with him. Even K tells her she doesn't have to say that. But she wants to. So it's more than her programming. That scene adds to this one and makes it more tragic
@diegosalazar550
@diegosalazar550 3 жыл бұрын
I think that the argument that joi is human could also be made. She seems to have done things beyond her programming that show evidence of her wanting to be real, just like K wants to be human. She mirrors him in the quest to be something more, something special. She wants to be real for him and took her own decision to invite the other girl in order to do something for K, even though he didn't necessarily want to in the beginning. She was able to make the decision on her own and convince him of it, as well as the decision of deleting her from the console and putting her in the emanator; since that way at least if she died, she'd die like a real girl. In this scene you can tell that joi expresses more emotions than the real girl when seducing K, just look at her expression before she kisses him. I think that she's just as human as K because she's making her own decisions, beyond programming. This mirrors K as well since newer replicant models were made to be more obedient but he was able to lie, make his own decisions, make his own choices; which in the end is what made him human, just like joi. My argument against the "Hello handsome" scene would be that K's joi developed a personality and love for him with time, which made her human. But the joi in the advertisement has not been able to break the barrier of her programming because she has not been able to make her own choices: she's a blank hologram, artificial, and you can see this in her colour. There's no emanator for her, there's no one giving her gifts, there's no one keeping her company, there's no one taking her on trips. Even though her calling him joe makes you think that K's joi still had influence from her programming, I think that this argument is not strong enough. In the first blade runner's "Tears of Rain" scene we could conclude that making your own choices is what makes you human, since the replicant became human when saving Decker, so he died a human. Just as K died a human by saving Decker and taking him to meet his daughter, joi died a human after making a series of decisions that in the end led to her dying for K just to keep his memories a secret, all of that before telling him she loves him. I'd be open to read anything else about this since this intrigues me and I do admit I've been left with a big wish for her to be human since she mirrors K in her wish to be a real girl. Also, feeling love is a release of chemicals in the brain of course; but I'd argument that since love is an abstract concept there's no limit to the ways that someone can feel it, even if that someone is a machine without brain chemicals, she is able to love him more than a real human could, which in turn makes her more human than human. P.S. Look at how when the real girl moves K's face to her, joi is watching her hand, deeply wishing she could do the same. Something that the real girl takes for granted, joi has an incredibly deep wish to achieve. This scene is not just meant as a gift for K, this is meant as a gift to herself as well; she wants to be real so she simulates it.

I cannot disagree with you, just to back and support a bit more the counterargument of the big hologram of Joi, that hologram wasn't only deprived from it's own will, but symbolically, it's eyes were completely empty, no pupils or color, just darkness, which i assume it tried to depict the AI's lack of 'humanity' and personality that K's Joi once developed beyond programming.
@diegosalazar550
@diegosalazar550 3 жыл бұрын
@@juliom3775 True, I think we are all programmed to a certain degree. Even humans, we have a genetic code. But we develop our own personality and memories on our own, just like Joi has programming and develops her own memories and personality (Even “Breaking” it by making her own decisions). K must’ve had a part in this, because K’s Joi had the opportunity of freedom that the big hologram did not.

@@diegosalazar550 bro. This is the best take on this story. Apart from Joi-K relationship , the fact that dude decided to lie and do his own thing both the times and also choosing to be human by dying for the right cause inspite of not being human makes this one of the greatest stories ever told. I too believe that Joi became humane and that her love is real. But I like this film for questioning us and give us the option to be optimistic or nihilistic. I went for optimistic route that his experiences are real, his girlfriend is real, his actions had impact and he died for a great cause than his and he died as someone is better than a human.

I knew when K downloaded Joi into the portable matrix that she was gonna be destroyed at some point, yet when it actually happened it still felt like a kick to the gut. I can honestly see this coming true in the future where technology is highly developed, because as human beings, we will always have that sense or feeling of needing to belong or a place to call home. Which is found among other people like family or friends, thus the need to feel loved or desired comes into existence. I can imagine a product like Joi, where one can customize their visual person, which ever race, gender, or features one desires. The fact that thousands or millions of people currently feel lonely, is proof that this product would thrive even today. Crazy how people wonder whether there is life outside our planet and if we're simply alone in this universe, but don't realize that we have each other as 8 billion people on this planet.
