Blade Runner's Original Roy Batty Trench Coat!

Now here's a piece of costuming that should be recognizable to any science fiction film fan. The original trench coat worn by Rutger Hauer as Roy Batty in Blade Runner was recently uncovered and is now part of Propstore's upcoming UK live auction, but not before Adam gets to examine and discuss its details with Propstore's Stephen Lane. They take a look this leather jacket's unique construction, from the asymetrical design to the original color of the large piping trim.

yeah! i bought some to add to my fairly inaccurate replica. they are often called western or steampunk clasps by various retailers. i remember years ago there was a thread where people tracked them down based on press photos

All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain" - One of the best lines in a movie ever. Blade Runner is such a masterpiece. While the moments may be lost, at least Roy's coat isn't. What a fantastic piece of art and history.

Its the amazing improvisation you get when you trust your actors to just, go for it. That line has been consecrated to the halls of human memory for all time, something he came up with on the spot, on the day... just elevated that movie from amazing to, iconic for all time. RIP Rutger Hauer... though to be fair Rutger, you're not dead. A shade of you lives within the minds and hearts of humanity and ever will.

Rutger Hauer was sublime in Blade Runner. It was like he wasn't acting. He WAS a replicant returning from space to confront his creator. He should have won an Oscar for supporting role. At least nominated.

In fact, Hauer changed his most iconic line in the entire movie without Scott knowing about it, it might even have been improvised on the spot. And it became one of the most iconic movie lines in the entire history of cinema. RIP Rutger Hauer. My mom met him once.

I actually like the contrast for the Batty coat. The character was very young in terms of time, but the weathering shows how much he went through in his short existence.

Wasn't roy at the end of his life-span when the movie took place? The replicants never got older than 4 years, so physical appearance wasn't really telling of age

Clothes maketh the Replicant. One of the most amazing movies ever. The story. The sets. The props. The costumes. The soundtrack, oh that soundtrack that just doesn't peer into your soul, but yanks the door right open and brazenly steps right on in and makes itself home. The actors were all on point. Every. Single. Time. The editing. The camera work. Lighting. The mythology. The writing. Stuntwork. Choreography .Everything. Every time I watch it, I always get goosebumps. How can't anyone be moved by this movie. This story. It's lightning in a bottle. A true masterpiece of celluloid.

Blade Runner is one of the best movies ever made. And Rutger Hauer and his "All these moments in time will be lost, like tears in rain" was beautiful and he added that himself. He was the perfect choice to play Roy Batty.

Remarkable. Blade Runner is my favorite film (I have about 99 2nd place finishers) and as Adam said, Rutger Hauer's performance is integral to the film. Just being in the same room with that coat and learning the story must have been amazing.

Thank you so much for showcasing this. IMO the fact that the tubing was originally orange but was painted over to black helps sell the weathering work, and I love how it could give an extra layer of headcanon history to the coat. Maybe it was a particularly handsome coat at the time Roy got it, but by the time he came to earth, he had been through so much that none of the colours were left.

You'll be happy to know that there are a few replica makers that you can acquire that coat from online. If I was adept at leather work, it would be the first thing I'd try and craft, honestly.

The dark leather look went on to influence a lot of films. I always wondered what happened to the costumes in Dark City for the Strangers. Those were some really interesting costumes.

Thanks so much for showing the coat. Yes, the coat added so much to the character. I am so pleased it has been found and that your camera man took such care to show us this treasure. People look at me funny sometimes when I tell them my favorite movie is Bladerunner. They have not seen it. I try not to oversell the movie to them but tell them they must see it. It was so moving to me. The best.

Blade Runner really was the beginning of cyberpunk. The noir future hellscape of blade runner caused William Gibson to re-edit neuromancer so he wouldn't get killed by a lawsuit after he took in a viewing one afternoon just prior to finishing his book. Blade runner influenced not just noir but the future of all futures to come. WIthout it, Ghost in the Shell might not be what it was and countless countless movies and genres are still influenced to this day. It is a must watch film. Of any Period.

Reading all the comments regarding Roy’s lines left me with a melancholic nostalgia as that moment came flooding back…those few lines spoke so deeply of the human condition to experience pains and pleasures but to ultimately loose them all to the inescapable count down of our biological or mechanical expiration dates.

I posted a comment with the answer for the clasps, but I can't see it now. Guess it got removed because of the link to a store I had in it. Anyway, the clasps are one of the many types of Turn Lock Clasps. If you do a search for that name, you should be able to find them. They are made in different colors, including black.

Blade Runner was so influential on many levels, fashion being one of them. In my opinion the greatest Syfy movie ever made. The movie was a stunning overload on the senses.

First saw Bladerunner as a kid in 1983 early one sat morn when my parents were still sleeping. They had rented it on VHS. Even at 9 years old it blew my mind and inspired me to become the filmmaker I am today.

It's my favorite by a long shot. (surpassed 150 viewings of the original release, about 40-50 of director's cut.) I used to watch it on repeat for like a year, after working long hours in the big city as an appliance repairman. Ridley just had that eye for props. He received a lot of flak for Deckard's apartment. They went so over the top with the budget for that room that it became one of the main reasons the production was nearly halted. Alien is another, where I think the prop work and general art design is just above and beyond. True science-fiction masterpieces, thanks to this gentleman. What did you think of 2049? I'm so thankful I got to see that in theaters, at the IMAX, on LSD. That was one of the best days of my life. (I was too young and missed Bladerunner in the theaters.)

In mixed company I'm not sure if I'd admit to how many times I've watched the original. ☺ While I found 2049 good and it furthered the story line it just wasn't on the level as the first. The dark, wet, messy overcrowded environment added to it.

Probably my all time favourite film, I even like the original theatrical cut with the voiceover. Everyone reading this should go watch "On The Edge Of Blade Runner (720p 50fps HD remastered)", it's an encode of recording I did of a UK Channel 4 documentary which was only ever broadcast once back in 2000.

This brings me back! There was an old show called "Movie Magic" I used to love, showed all the prop works and effects magic. The last seasons kind of just showed CGI-stuff, but those early seasons were gold. All models and practical effects. Seeing all the old props reminds me of all that fantasic craftsmanship and experience behind old movies. (Well, there's still a lot of craftsmanship and experience needed, but I'm not in to computer stuff)

Oh my God! This design is so great! it's just canon, simple and complex, brutal and elegant, so dystopian, retrofuturistic, classic cyberpunk vibe. This collar...hundreds of drawings from my youth: agents, replicants, influenced - Blade Runner, Dune, Syndicate, etc. Thank you very much, Adam.

Rutger Hauer's Roy is one of the greatest film characters of all time imo. I'm sure i am not alone in saying he is my favorite character in that movie... also one of my fav movies, and i mean the Final Cut. lol.

Those clasps I've seen a bunch of times on Ren faire pouches and handmade leather journals and such and I myself have used them cuz they're really handy. Not sure what they would have been on originally though unless they bought them new. Maybe a handbag?

I want to inform you that yes the back of the coat had a VERY brief spot in Blade Runner when Roy was asking Leon about his "precious photos" scene..... As they were both walking away, the back of Roy's coat was in the shot as they were going to the Eye Shop....Hate to call ya out, but I still love you, your work and Blade Runner 🥰👍

I've got one better. I met Rutger Hauer and watched Blade Runner (sitting right next to him), one of the Director's Cuts (without Harrison Ford's voice-over) in Vancouver in 1992. So beat that! And he was as you'd expect. Super cool, easy to talk to, pleasant and very nice.

I wish I had the money to buy a BR prop :( I don’t think they made just one of each btw. Visuals were so important and so much can go wrong during shooting, it would be naive to think they just made one of it.

Found my way here after playing 2077... It was unexpected how it hit me. Now I can see how someone can appreciate these set pieces, and clothing. Deck shuffle that got me lost into the world or somewhere in between here and there.

I love that these auctions do have props at all price levels. And what might be relatively worthless to the major of people might be a prized prop for another person.

Mesmerizing. I think the rubber tubing of the era was only available in orange (in the UK at least) and was always meant to be black, but has just peeled with age.

It's certainly possible, though what makes me lean the other way is that you can see in BTS photos that his pants originally had matching orange/red bottom cuffs and side stripes that appear to have been crudely darkened.

The clasp is a latch for things like bags. you can buy them in several sizes at at Tandy or Sprngfield leather.

The piping on the costumes (in this and prometheus / alien covenant) is from the 1965 Mario Bava film 'Planet of the Vampires'. Ridley talked about in some promo material for Prometheus.
