To be fair, when you are competing against rocks, any steel would be "glorious" in comparison.

Along with Leo's and El Señor vuestro Dios's comments, I'd note that Japanese swordmaking is pretty much designed for working with poor-quality iron, so it makes a lot of sense to use that in a stone world, particularly if it's where Japan used to be. Beyond that, yeah, they were playing to the home team.

@@LollipopKnight2 a katana is not made from regular iron they also have to be made in a specific way to harden the spine of the blade so it does not chip or crack the it and the metal of the blade has been changed to a much stronger lighter metal even though it was pretty lightweight in the first place, sorry for the over the top comment and semi lecture/teaching of how to make katana.

@@gutsmasterson2488 yeah, but even a novice with a spear can do decently against an average swordsman. The sword's practical use is as a self defense weapon not on the battlefield. Maybe I just have a bias against spears, but I do feel that generally spears have an advantage over swords unless in a confined environment

Leroy Tan the katana were for shock factor too. The spears were sloppily made and could break easily without skills like Hyouga’s.

If the spear is so feeble that you can just cut it easily in one contact, then yeah sword is superior.

To make swords requires understanding of metal and to make them this fast means Senku needed to speed up the usual process to make swords so most likely these aren't entirely traditionally forged Katanas

@@Excalibur01 he explains it in the anime himself. Traditional katana’s were made with 10 or more folds. But science has found out the blade doesn’t get better after 4 folds. So Senku cut time on that.

With how it was refined I wouldn't be surprised if senku turned the iron into steel

I don’t think he has enough steel to make armour but my theory is that senku fortify the steel katana just enough for the others to fight back, also trained them the katana basic swordsmanship but depending on the person learning

I did enjoy that following scene when the Fist of the North Star bandits died from suffocation.

They got wood poles. With steel weapons they got no shit, their tools cannot even clash with them

CasinoR wrong, they have flint spears and axes. I dare you to strike a katana against a rock and not expect it to break. Also spears beat sword nearly any day of the week. The only reason why they won was because they cut through the wooden portion and Tsukasa’s army was too inept with their weapons.
