I really like that you share so much different writing advice, from so many different authors, but reiterate that there is no one right way. Though if I were writing and didn't know how it was going to end until about 100 pages before the end I feel like I'd just lose the thread of what I was doing 🤣

I don't always know the ending until I get there, or close to it. And I generally don't plan too much, I have a little plan and build on it from there!

That’s how I like to progress as well, I couldn’t outline an entire book and still stay interested in it I don’t think!

I took no. 5 differently from you. I'm sure you're right too, but the way I took it was that ideally the style of writing fits the story. When I write, I always have in mind a viewpoint character. (So I personally don't do omniscient POV.) What I want the reader to hear as they read is not my voice as the author but the voice of that character as they tell the story.

Absolutely, that's definitely a good reading of that tip. Sounds like a great approach to writing. I strongly agree with hearing characters and not the author.

Well, there's plenty of love in his books, but it's really more of a noticeable love for science I think! 😃 A lot of what he said clicked with me too.

I often start with an image or a line of strong dialogue with shorter fiction. Longer fiction I’m still figuring out which works best, outlining and pantsing with different projects, I find writing longer stuff exciting when I’m writing it, but often dread going back to edit/rewrite, maybe sticking the landing😂Thanks for the videos, I like to comiserate about writing process🙂

Me too, you could say it’s the foundation of this channel really! 😂 I’m right there with you when it comes to long fiction, can’t figure out a launching point either and editing something so long is daunting. Short fiction is where it’s at for me! At least for now…

I agree at this point in my life, short fiction seems dominate my time and interest, but when feel like I hit a roadblock, I do other forms of writing or something else creative, like carving or woodworking. Still trying to figure out novel writing. 🤔

@@KierenWestwoodWriting I just started a few years ago and the greatest thing about youtube there is a wealth of knowledge to tap into, and with Amazon you can have supplies delivered to your door. It feels great to make something immediately versus with the fermentation process of writing😂

Didn't Hemingway famously write 46 different ending for 'For Whom the Bell Tolls'? I find endings REALLY DIFFICULT! Love that he doesn't write each book the same way. Makes sense, but until you hear it out loud...

46 endings! 😱 I can't imagine that, my laptop would be out the window! I found his comments refreshingly honest and encouraging. Surrounded by a lot of prescriptive writing advice (which I try to avoid being a source of myself) it's nice to hear that someone else's relationship with writing is also irregular and a bit chaotic!

I really enjoyed your video, Kieren - Points 1 & 5 really shone. I am currently working on 3 different stories, each of them a different genre, and reading audience. What I have noticed is that each story requires a different approach in plotting, outlining and research - even the mindset I am in changes which piece to work on. "Landing the Plane" - there is a great video idea there for finishing a wip, writing to the end of the story. Hope you are going well, hows work?

Thanks mate! I found his advice quite refreshing and honest. Great to hear you're exploring different types of story simultaneously, sounds like a lot of fun to me 😀 I'm going ok! How about you? Currently working on an extended story made of 100 word microfictions, 42 of them written and counting!

@@KierenWestwoodWriting going well here - Australia is coming out of lockdown, it's all hands on deck and it will be interesting to see how that goes between now and the EOY period. Hopefully, I'll still get some writing down. ✌🏻
