3+ years on a CS map with 103K miles, driven hard daily but also dual purpose with a few tracks days. Definitely will be doing the hub before I go full GT4. Thanks for all you do for the platform; just goes to show it really needs to be done for absolute piece of mind!

No problem, glad you enjoy the content. Yeah, definitely a thing that unfortunately should be done. You may get lucky like me twice and just go a bit out of time but it sucks when the valves crash and it costs the big bucks. I think my biggest reason for not doing it was just not knowing of a good shop around that wanted to tackle the feat. Also I feel like if I did it before the spin I would have be a lot more likely to do the repair myself.

Great content! I was shopping around for quotes in the bay area to get this done and Performance Dynamics was the one I was planning to go to as well with their SSR Maximum keyed 4pin. This makes me feel more confident going to them since I barely trust shops doing work on my car. Planning to get this done soon and get exhaust camshaft ticking noise fixed while they're in there.

I had my crankhub done at performancedynamic. I have a 17 comp with a stage 1 tune no mods but decided to do it for preventative purposes. I had the same “tick” sound as well and it was the valvetronic servomotor which is going to run the cost up a bit but trust me for a piece of mind it’s totally worth it. My advice is also get a crank seal guard kit as well and also do spark plugs because it’ll cross in the labor. But performance dynamic is great and I also went with SSR 4 pin! Good luck to you and enjoy you will not regret doing the preventative maintenance.

Yeah, I would’ve attempted this one myself, but due to the fact that my motor was already out of time I was kind of nervous about screwing it up. So I wanted to have a shop that was proficient do it just because I would’ve been into it I think about $1500 for the tools gaskets and what not. Doing it on jackstands also doesn’t sound fun, but I hope yours goes well and you’re able to bust out more in the future. 👍🏻👍🏻

Hi Blake, Thank you for sharing your experience about the crank up. I had question about your first crank hub spin. Did you replace OEM or aftermarket for you 1st time crank hub spin? I was little confused when you mentioned at BMW dealer and you asked them to install your aftermarket crank hub. Because I am going to replace aftermarket 4 pin crank hub, and I'm wondering if 4 pin crank hub still having the same issue with OEM crank hub or not. Sorry for long paragraph, and I really apricate your item!!!
@BlakesGarage

Sorry I thought I made that clear. No, the dealership just replaced the stock crank hub. I had a Gintani and asked if they would install it but they said no. So I sold that and kept the engine tune stock for the next 30k. At the time no local shop wanted to even attempt the fix especially because my car was “broken”.

I think they didn’t do a recall because it’s probably not as common as we think it is, it’s just something that’s talked about a lot because of how catastrophic it can be. And a lot of cars that have it happen are tuned and that gives BMW much more reason to not recall it lol but it does suck
@BlakesGarage
@BlakesGarage 3 ай бұрын
IDK, I think it's because people just took it upon themselves to do the fix before failure. So there were way less recorded failures. Think about how many people did rod bearings every 35k miles on the S65 good to be precautionary but still ridiculous if your paying a shop and acting like its just normal maintenance.

@BlakesGarage
@BlakesGarage 3 ай бұрын
Yeah, the first time it happened Bmw just fixed it with stock parts and flagged my car. so then at that point, I decided not to tune the car again and just run it stock because I didn’t want to spend like $4500 at the time to have a shop do it. No one at this point wanted to take responsibility and doing the modification at that time locally that I knew of just too much of a liability every shop said.

I’ve been Mhd stage 1 for 19k miles, currently at 39k miles on the stock hub of my m4. Honestly, I think the issue how someone is driving the car. The m4 gts makes around 500 hp on the same hub. A friend of mine has 110k miles on the stock hub on bm3 stage 2. Personally I would like to get mine done but I can’t find a local shop around the DC area that doesn’t want to charge 6-7k, which is not a fair price whatsoever.

@BlakesGarage
@BlakesGarage 3 ай бұрын
You sure it was never done? Were you the first owner? If not wouldn’t surprise me if someone did it. As far as E85 probably not due to the fact that it’s hard to get at racetracks. Plus, the torque is super spiky. I’d probably have to get another tune with a more linear throttle. I don’t know if you ever watched my E85 autocross video but it was quite fun.

Also I’m sharing that is not always a catastrophic failure and it can just put the engine slightly out of time but still run fine until repaired.

This sucks man. I'm Stage 2 bootmod3 on stock crankhub, stock everything, but haven't messed with E85 because it seems like it almost certainly spins when going on E. And my car is 105k miles. No issues thus far.
@BlakesGarage
@BlakesGarage 3 ай бұрын
Yeah, the second time I did it I was on stock crank hub again because Bmw just replaced it with the original crank hub. I did not do a fix. I don’t know if I stated that well enough. But it’s fun for the second time on a pretty basic stage one tune. So yeah it’s just one of those things. You’re definitely risking it and it can happen at any time unfortunately. I did not need to see this today 😢. I’ve been on stage one for about 1k mi now, I’ve owned the car stock for 20k mi prior now at 23k and have never been on edge until I started digging into crankhub after the tune. This shit really has me on edge, bunch of people saying it’s BS, other bunch saying you should do it or you’re going to need a new engine, then you have this guy that’s driving on a spin hub. I’m just highly confused on what is just shop scare marketing and what’s an actual concern. Also, if a shop does it and the shit does spin, are they liable or will they tell you to kick rocks? Nobody, not even a shop would want to be held liable for a $35k engine. This shit got me freaked out man.
@BlakesGarage
@BlakesGarage 3 ай бұрын
Yeah, due to the fact that I knew it only spun slightly I wasn’t worried about driving it as the engine was in limp mode and make 0 boost. But Stage 1 is definitely territory for a spun hub. I think the CS map is about as high as you wanna go before really worrying about it. I only drove this car on the new tune for maybe 600 miles and it spun. I’d say it was a bit more spicy than a stage 1 but very similar down low.
@Steezelouiz
@Steezelouiz 2 ай бұрын
I really believe it depends on how much you abuse your car, track use is much harder on the hub on with stock tune then occasionally pulls on the highways with a stage 1 tune. Driving on the track you are constantly upshifting and downshifting which extremely stresses the friction ring of the hub. A stage 1 tune makes a little more power than a gts. Get the crank hub capture, lock the flywheel with a screw driver and crank down on the crank bolt with a torque wrench and make sure that sucker is tight, then through the capture on. This can all be from under the car without removing anything up top.
