Pilot/Engineer/FAA A&P 30+ years. I can not stress the importance of spending a few hundred bucks on having a knowable, experienced and licensed person complete a pre-purchase inspection. I've seen countless buyers impulse buy only to face thousands in mandatory repairs and AWD compliance. "Buying an airplane is cheap as compared to PROPERLY & LEGALY maintaining it." Great hangar tour. Be safe everyone.

Just did an extensive two day pre-buy inspection on a 172B that I bought. Stayed with the AME every step of the way so I could see what was going on and to gain an understanding of the plane I was about to buy. Now I know what needs to be done, and I feel confident that I'm flying something safe. Walked away from a bunch of potential purchases because a pre-buy wasn't an option - seller wouldn't allow it because the plane was 'in annual'.

I know a guy that bought a twin from Florida, seller provided a full inspection report that turned out to be bogus. The plane is being parted out, as it is beyond financial feasibility to repair. The engines, dash components, and landing gear are good, but the airframe is a mess. Get your own inspector!

When Ford went to an aluminum body on the F-150 they went to great lengths to keep the body from touching any steel. They have plastic in-between dissimilar metals and plastic bushings and oversized holes on bolts and rivets.

I have done dozens of pre-buy inspections (mostly on helicopters but some Fixed-wings also). The one thing that I always did is NEVER trust the paperwork, sign offs declarations. If it was done correctly, it is possible to find out sign-offs that were not done. A detailed inspection and study of all mandatory SBs, ADs, and approvals of mods, STCs to see if they were approved for the model and other details. I remember when I took the IA exams. The examiner would give me an aircraft, model, serial number, registration number, engine model and serial number, prop S/N and P/N with a P/N & S/N carburetor and starter P/N & S/N. Then I was asked if I could remove a the generator P/N & S/N and replace it with a more powerful Generator (say take off a 150 amp and install a 200 amp). In the TCDS the upgrade was listed and approved, BUT the serial number of the propeller was not certified for the aircraft serial number group, so you would be installing and approved replacement of the generator on an illegal airplane due to the non-approved propeller installation putting it out of compliance with the airframe TCDS.

Wow! you brought back some memories at Creswell. I grew up just over the hill from the airport and made my first long cross country from Concord, CA to see my parents. That was for my Commercial License. Over the years I have been into Creswell airport at least 20 times. Did they ever remove the tree at the south end of the runway? With only 2000 feet of runway I brushed the top of that tree several times. When I started flying in there their was only a 10 foot wide strip of asphalt. A Cherokee 6 just bearly fit. Thanks Juan for the memory flash.

A client of mine bought a taildragger from a “reputable dealer” then contacted me for some dual after the fact. No pre-purchase inspection. The sale included an “annual.” His insurance company required him to have 15 hours with a CFI before he solos it. During the past year, we’ve only had 5 hours and many issues with the airplane. Personally, I think it was a pencil whipped annual. ALWAYS have your own guy do a prebuy, get involved with owner assisted annuals, the workings of a borescope and the judicious use of ACF50. Your airplane and wallet will love you for it.

Started out in 1974 on DC3's and ended up on hvy jets. You can sink a TON...as in a TON of cash in a " Freshly Painted or nice looking" aircraft. Great Video. Pre inspection IN THE CONTRACT TO BUY ...IN WRITING is a Must.

Buying an experimental (EAB) can save you a ton of $$ on maintenance cost in parts alone. Bought my RV-8 in 2017. Had a pre-buy done, but over the next 2 years experienced regular downtime due to problematic auxiliaries...mags, servos, stick grip, transponder, ELT, solenoids, battery, hoses, carburetor. If I ever buy another used aircraft I'll take a look at the logs and if any auxiliaries have more than 1000 hrs on them, I'll just replace them all in one go. Cheap to do if an experimental. It would save a lot of time and money. Fires up within one revolution now, every time. No squawks in the past year and I fly most every day weather permitting.

People right now are throwing $ at anything on the market. Inflated prices and FOMO. I looked at a couple and decided to wait it out. Demanding sellers who don’t even want to answer basics or wait while a prebuy is scheduled, just want a check in-full. They might get it but once these prices come back down I imagine there will be quite a few new airplane owners feeling regret.

I just bought one that has not flown since annual in 2018 and has sat in a hangar. It goes to the shop this week on a ferry permit. I don’t think anything can be wrong with a 50 year old Arrow II. It has a brand new engine with 90 hours since new. No ADSB. And a ADF that takes up most of the co-pilots side. I am sure it will be out of the shop in a day or 2. It does have an inop AC with a belt zip tied on the cowling. I hope it drops about 100-120 pounds.

I sense where you re coming from. The definition "influencer" has negative connotations attached, notably of corruption. Perhaps "influencer" may become rehabilitated if positive outcomes flow down the stream of time. There are few healthier things than more young folk becoming attracted to the people and culture of aviation. At its heart is a degree of self-motivation, personal resource and self-discipline. Those attributes may well spill over into other enterprise even if the person does not endure in aviation. I would rather see young folk experience this "developed interest" rather than find their feet in the more extreme military and paramilitary subcultures and come out of that damaged in body and mind.
