Ok this is gonna be a long comment but I love being able to tell folks about Rhiannon and the story behind Stevie writing this song --- After finding herself in an airport waiting for a flight before going on tour, she ended up purchasing a book to read. The main character in the book was named Rhiannon and she said she felt a connection to the name and wrote the song based on what came to mind as a result of that connection. At that point, she had no idea about a fairly famous Rhiannon, a goddess and sorceress in Welsh folklore but the crazy part about the song was that it just so happened to have lined up perfectly with the legend of Rhiannon from the Mabinogion, a medieval era book of Welsh folklore, the Rhiannon who I mentioned was the Goddess and sorceress. Stevie had no idea about the goddess when she wrote the song, so when it coincidentally lined up perfectly, people began suspecting that she was a witch, the reincarnation of Rhiannon herself, or in some way connected to her without knowing it. The fact that she rather liked wearing all black didn't help her case either, and so began the rumour of Stevie being a witch and somehow in league with Rhiannon herself. She has stated numerous times that she isn't a witch at all and simply thinks that blonde hair looks good when paired with black clothing. It was indeed a coincidence but still a crazy one nonetheless. In the feed of this comment is the story of Rhiannon the Goddess just so you can see how the song lines up with the story. I might have to break it into a couple parts cause it's fairly long but I wanted to include it so you can see how the song lines up with the folklore of Rhiannon the goddess and sorceress!

Rhiannon, Queen of Faeries Pt. 1 ------------------------------------------------------- Of the stories from Wales, perhaps none is more well known than that of Rhiannon the Queen of Fairies, and Pwyll (PW+eeth) of Dyfed. The first part of the story begins after Pwyll's adventure in the Welsh underworld, Annwvyn. Word reached him of a legendary hill called Gorsedd Arberth (Gore+sayth Ar+BAIR+th). Should one reach the top and sit upon it, he would be granted with death or with a miracle. It was a fifty fifty chance. So Pwyll, Prince of Dyfed (that is the Western kingdom in Wales), responded to this by saying that, while he isn't terribly fond of the risk of dying, he was also intrigued by the prospect of a Miracle. So he resolved to climb the hill anyway. Accompanied by a few of his men, they reached the top and sat for a while. Not long after, a beautiful woman dressed in shining gold appeared before them, riding upon a large, pure white horse. She seemingly moved in slow motion. Once more intrigued, he sent out some of his men to follow her, but they returned without any luck. On the second day, he did this once more but with his men now on horseback themselves. However, again, they returned with no luck in finding her. On the third day, Pwyll decided to take matters into his own hands and mounted his own horse, determined to find her. At first, it seemed like she would forever remain out of reach, however, in one last attempt, he called out to her. "O, maiden, for the sake of him whom thou best lovest, stay for me," said he. Upon hearing this, she halted and allowed him to approach her. She then explained to Pwyll that her parents had engaged her to a man who she did not love. She begged Pwyll to marry her in one year's time. Pwyll agreed to this and one year later, the ceremony was held. During the ceremony, a man appeared and asked Pwyll for a favour. Pwyll replied by saying he would gladly do whatever the man needed. He asked Pwyll for Rhiannon, thus revealing himself as the man Rhiannon had been forced into an arranged engagement with, Gwawl. As he had sworn his soul to do as he was asked, he had no choice but to agree. Rhiannon cleverly devised a plan to get her back and handed Pwyll a small bag. This bag was enchanted, and could hold the equivalent to a bag much much larger in size. She instructed Pwyll that, on the wedding night, he should ask Gwawl for a bagful of food. She would take the food and put it into the bag, without it seemingly getting fuller. One year later, when Rhiannon's wedding to Gwawl came to pass, on their wedding night, Pwyll came with the bag and asked for it to be filled. Gwawl promised, swearing his soul to it, then told Rhiannon to fill it. She took the bag and tried to fill it, however no matter how much she put into the bag, it would not fill, just as she told Pwyll would happen. Gwawl asked why it wouldn't fill, and Pwyll replied by saying that a Nobleman had to climb into it. Having sworn his soul to Pwyll's requests, he climbed into the bag. Pwyll promptly tied the top of the bag shut, thus trapping Gwawl inside of it. To announce this, Pwyll blew on his hunting horn and the hall was flooded by his own knights. After several hours, Gwawl begged to be let out. Pwyll did so after making Gwawl swear to not take revenge and let them, Pwyll and Rhiannon, live in peace together. Gwawl departed with his promise made, and Rhiannon and Pwyll finally married. Three years then passed since Rhiannon and Pwyll were married. In that time since they had wed, they tried for a child but none came. Many said that they were cursed, others said it was because Pwyll had passed his prime, while some blamed it on Rhiannon herself. Many of the Lords of the land were saddened to see them unhappy. So Pwyll said to them that he would try for one year more before divorcing Rhiannon finding a younger wife, as the Lords had advised him. It was not long after these things had been said that Rhiannon found herself to be with child, and soon, a baby boy was born to them! The kingdom rejoiced, but this joy was short lived. The six women who were to stay with Rhiannon and watch over the child in the night had all fallen asleep by midnight, and in their sleep, the newborn vanished. Fearing for their lives, they devised a wicked plan to save their own skins. They murdered a litter of young puppies and put the blood on Rhiannon's mouth and hands, then scattered the bones about. Upon the arrival of the morn, Rhiannon awoke and asked where her son was. The women replied to her, saying that they had been bruised and battered while trying to stop her from devouring her own child, but her fit of madness was too strong for them to subdue her and save the child. Rhiannon replied thus "Oh for pity's sake! The Lord knows all things. Charge me not falsely. If you tell me this from fear, I assert before Heaven that I will defend you." But the women held firm to their claim. Word was quickly spread, and Pwyll was approached by the Lords of the land. They told him that he must put his wife away, for the horrible deed she had done. Meanwhile, Rhiannon called the teachers and wisemen of the land together, and asked what should be done. They replied that she should remain at the palace of Narberth (Naar + Bairth) until the end of seven years. There, she should sit at the horse-block outside of the gate, relaying the falsified story to all who would hear. Then, should they permit her to do so, she was to carry them on her back, up and into the palace. This was because Rhiannon had requested to take upon herself the punishments which would have been placed upon the women for their false accusations.

Rhiannon, Queen of Faeries Pt. 2 ------------------------------------------------------- And so forth she went to Narberth. Elsewhere, during the time Rhiannon was away, a farmer known for his kindness and good nature, had been dealing with a mare of his who mysteriously foaled every first of May, only for the newborn colt or filly to vanish promptly. He resolved to guard the horse on this eve of May, determined to figure out what was happening. Once more, the mare foaled and a colt was born, however, a large clawed hand came from the darkness, striking at the farmer and the colt. He drew his sword and cut the creature's arm at the elbow, then proceeded to take the colt and retreat indoors once more. No sooner than when the door shut, the sounds of an infant crying echoed out. He rushed from the house once more, following the noise. However, he remembered that he had left the door open, and turned back. Upon returning home, he found a crying infant boy on the step. The farmer took the babe in and was astonished for the strength of the child for his young age. The farmer went to his wife and woke her. He explained to her what had happened, and she noticed the fine silk which he was clothed in. Surely this boy was of noble status. However, not knowing from where he came, the two resolved to say the child was their own, newly born that evening. Because of his golden hair, they christened him Gwri Wallt Euryn (Gu+ree Washt Ey+Rin). As the years passed, the boy grew much quicker than a normal boy would. By his second year, it was as though he was six! The colt which had been saved the same night the boy was taken in was granted his to take care of, and when he was old enough, to ride. Meanwhile, Rhiannon's story had reached the country where the farmer lived. He was saddened to hear of her sorrow and suffering, but upon hearing more of the details, he began to make several connections. He began to see the striking resemblance of the boy to Pwyll, and he began to feel guilty for keeping the boy whom he knew must belong to someone else. His guilt was greatened when he considered the pain Rhiannon had suffered through for something she did not do, and so the farmer and his wife resolved to return the boy to Pwyll. A short time later, the Farmer, accompanied by two knights, brought the boy to Narberth. They found Rhiannon by her horse-block, where she greeted them by recounting how she killed and devoured her own son, and that this was her punishment. But the boy and the farmer both refused to be carried by her. They lead Rhiannon to the palace, side by side to her, and there a great feast was prepared. It was here that the farmer recounted the tale of what happened, and how he and his wife had taken the child in and cared for him. And behold here is thy son, lady," said Teirnyon, the farmer. "And whosoever told that lie concerning thee, has done wrong. And when I heard of thy sorrow, I was troubled and grieved. And I believe that there is none of this host, who will not perceive that the boy is the son of Pwyll." Rhiannon was overtaken with joy. Pwyll smiled upon his wife and said "Hast thou named thy son Pryderi (Pruh+Der+ee)? It is proper that the boy should take his name from the word his mother spoke when she received the joyful tidings of him." And with that, Pwyll blessed the farmer and his wife for caring for his son, and granted him his own support for the rest of his life. Rhiannon was freed from her punishment, as her son was alive, and they raised the child well. Pryderi grew to be the fairest man in the land, and the most comely and best at games too. And when his father's time in this world came to an end, Pryderi became the next to rule Dyfed, and he did so greatly, being well loved by the people. °•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•° Congrats if you made it to the end! Hopefully this gives you better insight into the song and how it came to be, and perhaps also into Stevie herself. She has actually played off the rumours of her being a witch before actually, primarily when she played an alternate reality version of herself who indeed was a white witch, in American Horror Story, Coven, and then again for a brief bit in a more later season, Apocalypse. Again, sorry for this being so long, I just like being able to give this insight to the whole story of the song and of Stevie!

My girlfriend bought the outfit Stevie Nicks is wearing and had her hair done up like Stevie Nicks , she would then put on some Fleetwood mac and use my brothers mic stands he had for his band and she would sing their songs to me all the time . I didn't really notice until seeing this video how much she actually looked like Stevie in 1976 . My girlfriend died in 2006 at 44 yrs old and although I know its not her in the video its still a bitter sweet memory every time I watch this video " Rhiannon " while at the same time its like being able to go back in time and relive the good times we had back then .

That change in the music around 4:00 was pretty neat. The bassline changes (John McVie does some great basslines. Everywhere, Go Your Own Way. etcetera). And the guitar changes tempo a bit as well. Fleetwood Mac are amazing. This song and Big Love live by Lindsay Buckingham are the best in my opinion. There is no solo in the studio version of Rhiannon, they all added their own touches in this live version which makes it really shine. And yeah.. The finish of this song is to die for seriously. Top of the best.

"Rhiannon is a major figure in the Mabinogi, the medieval Welsh story collection. She appears mainly in the First Branch of the Mabinogi, and again in the Third Branch. She is a strong-minded Otherworld woman, who chooses Pwyll, prince of Dyfed (west Wales), as her consort, in preference to another man to whom she has already been betrothed. She is intelligent, politically strategic, beautiful, and famed for her wealth and generosity. With Pwyll she has a son, the hero Pryderi, who later inherits the lordship of Dyfed. She endures tragedy when her newborn child is abducted, and she is accused of infanticide. As a widow she marries Manawydan of the British royal family, and has further adventures involving enchantments." she may also be inspired by a Celtic diety

Niah, such a treat to see new generations really listen to the music that I grew up on and, sincerely enjoy it. I grew up in the 70's/80's and love a variety of music but FM was California rock w/ English blues-who woulda thought? But, I digress. "Rhiannon" is this bewitching woman who wants to take you with her: in flight, through the night---okay, I''m in. That being said, Stevie had read a book about the 3 birds of Rhiannon and so, this witch from Wales' legacy begins. Stevie is like your godmother who puts poems to music and you want to crank up the volume on a Saturday when your cleaning your house. And sing out loud. XOXO

The funny thing I've just noticed is your name Niah is very similar to the Welsh name Nia, and may well be pronounced the same way, so this is another link you have to this song, Rhiannon being Welsh and very much a part of our myths. Loved your reaction and appreciation of the '70s, you'd of fit in just fine to that time.

Glad that you checked out a live recording of the song. "Landslide" is a song you will like now but over time it will resonate with you in a different, deeper way. It's good that you're getting into these bands now so there will be a feeling nostalgia when/if you do give some of these songs another listen 20-30 years from now.

so glad you found this. 1965-1985 had so much good music. and not just people imitating each other but all sorts of people experimenting with new sounds. and there was lots of fusion music..or thats what I call it with a mixture of different styles together. here is another song from 1976 thats a mixture of disco, funk and jazz....would love to see your reaction to it. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p7GKa8qYnczKcWg.html

It's a change of intensity, not pace, but it makes you feel like that. If you listen to it again, and pay attention exclusively to the bass, you'll hear how he never changes tempo.

Well, Fleetwood Mac is in the R&R HOF, and Stevie Nicks is in the R&R HOF as a solo artist....so yes, Stevie has been indicted twice. That pretty much says it all!

The beat is still going, but when the guitarist wanst to play a little quieter, he can quickly roll his volume down a bit on the guitar and also pick the strings lighter and if they all do that, hit the strings or drums lighter, it gives the sensation of slowing down or.....mellowing out.

They simply lowered down the volume and intensity of the notes they were playing to make that change you heard with the beat never changing. When you’ve done more Fleetwood Mac reactions, give a listen to a great duo collaboration Stevie Nicks did with Kenny Logins. The song is called Whenever I Call You Friend. It came out in 1978 when I was living in Hawaii. For at least 5 years or more, there is a note she hits that would literally put a physical chill right up my spine. No other song ever has done that to me. Sadly I don’t get that chill anymore but anytime I hear that song again, when she hits that note each and every time I’m on the edge of my seat waiting for that chill to hit me again.

Beautiful song - Rhiannon is a Celtic myth of a goddess riding a white horse. She has powers to manifest her dreams and has healing powers. She also rides with magical birds as well. Stevie references these birds and probably sees herself as Rhiannon with the lyrics "Would you stay if she promised you heaven? Will you ever win?" and "She rules her life like a bird in flight. And who will be her lover." May be a wish for a more stable relationship with Lindsey Buckingham at the time.

Enjoyed your reaction to "Rhiannon". I feel it is the best version I've ever seen. I'm a big Fleetwood Mac/Stevie Nicks fan since the early 70s. The "Rumors" album is likely their best. I noticed you haven't done any other Fleetwood Mac or Stevie Nicks song since this one. Two years! May I suggest "The Chain" or "Landslide"? These two songs are among my favorite and I think you'd really, really like them. Please check them out. I also recommend other artists like The Scorpion's "Still Loving You" (official video, length: 4:47, more is better!) or "Wind of Change". Both are amazing. Another is Def Leppard's "Rock of Ages" and "Foolin'". Both songs are epic! I urge you to give these songs a review, or, if not, just play them and listen! Rock on!

change of pace might be going from 8th notes or 16th notes to quarter notes during the slowdown The beat stays the same but the number of notes within the beats lessen.....essentially the rhythm of the song changes but the beats per minute are constant
