Just a helpful tip I found. I'd an image isn't lot correctly, import it into gimp or photoshop, then duplicate the layer, desaturated the new layer and invert its colours then set the layer to Soft Light.

You've probably learned this by now since I'm replying an entire year later, but this using an alpha texture for sculpting in this way affects the actual topology of the mesh, so it will be visible in any renderer as well as the viewport

Id like to use this method to make symbols on my model of sword. I have the sword modelled out. I have my reference pic, which im trying to use for making the height maps. After i aply the brush the result is very weird, it looks like a desired shape but there are different depths on each vert.. what am i doing wrong? Im begginer so i just follow steps in tutorial. Thanks for reply.

@@in2vert I figured it out. The reference picture has uneven lightning. So it messes up the height map. BUT thanks to your leviathan axe amazing video i will dump the reference picture and doing it by height map and brush and ill do it in sculpt by hand using mask. I think i will br able to do it even as a newbie. Thank you sir.

I have huge problems with textures :( I made a deer, retopologied it and used multires. and shrinkwrap to make a smoother version with around 100k faces (that the amount of the official ingame creatures) But as soon as i want to make the textures with the alphas, the brush escalates completely and the texture throws bubbles and cracks excessively. You cant see anything from the original alpha. I tried it with 1,6 million faces, 6 million and 26 million. I tried to just in the multi res mofifier.. I tried to apply the mofidier with all three faces. But the result is the same every time. I made everthing exact the way you show in the creature parts... I tried it with your alphas from patreon and bought about 7 different packs of alphas... some 2-4k resolution... still same result.. I really dunno whats wrong :(

To see the Alpha Texture clearly do i need to set the object to high resolution like add Subdivision or MultiResolution?

Anyway to define an alpha mid grey that darker parts push into and light parts pop out the surface?

You cannot. It's always black = 0, white = 1. What you want to adjust however, is the "Sample Bias" setting. This way you can go from e.g. -0.5 to 0.5 like you said. I explain it in my latest video "How to sculpt killer details". Make sure to check it out :)

Its worth pointing out here that materialize only can export 8 bit textures, making them useless at higher resolutions.

Yes
