Andrew, yep 60 years ago I to felt the same. Hours of carefully building a model ,cutting out ribs,glueing struts together then doping tissue paper. After completion I'd think just that, can't fly this hours of work smashed in an instance! But gliders or elastic band power is remarkably forgiving. New stuff and materials are so much stronger. I still fly today.

Hi Andrew - Tony is constantly improving and bringing new kits to market. Steve Webb Models in the UK is the TONY RAY distributor and the Bleriot has just been reviewed in Aero modeller magazine . Using Micro RC it is very much a flying model. The reviewer found it flew out doors on a calm day for ages at half throttle on the type A Brushed motor that SWM sell for the kit. Tissue. Be light with the Pritt Stik and we have lighter tissues. The tissue Tony is now using is much better. He's constantly improved on his designs. if you can get Aeromodeller January 2020, get it and see the review. And the flying review. its a great flyer. servo boy aka swebb

Maybe you would want to use it as a desk fan by turning the prop around? For when summer comes back around to you? Or you could a wire up motion sensor to it and have it look like it's flying every time you walk through the hallway. Maybe some LEDs insi... I guess I should buy one myself ^^ Thank you you for the video (and all the others)!

I think that is a great model for static display, very intricate details. Laser cutting allowed for some ingenious layouts and fitments. Wondering when the last time you covered a model with tissue was? After Monokote, et al. I never went back, that was mid 70's. (Okay, I won't ask: "Does it slope?" lol.)

You have real patience. I once started building a Wellington bomber but got so frustrated when I couldn't get the wings to line up I ended up throwing it at the wall! Needless to say it was the only time that particular model actually flew. I'm a lot older now and a lot more patient but tend to shy away from things that are a bit "fiddly"....

You make it look soooo easy... enjoyed watching the build

doesn't look like you doped it, I'm sure you did, but we used to cellulose dope tissue back in the day. Not trying to teach Grandma how to suck eggs, but balsa kits were the cheapest thing back in the 80's, I learnt to dope the frame at least 3 times and let it soak in, then tissue the fuz, wings etc before assembling the model, 2 coats of dope on the wings, 3 on the fuz. Then cut/sand before assembly. Maybe add some more tissue dope etc if needed after it was assembled. My Dad and I built a Fokker dr1, with a Co2 motor on it which got me into the whole thing, that one had Solid balsa wings 3 of 'em that we tissued and doped as that Co2 motor had some grunt. It was red of course. Best ever balsa free flight model I ever built was a KeilKraft competitor. Triple dihedral 600mm ish wing, at least a 6" prop and about a 150m of 3x1mm rubber all doubled up 8 times in it. If you could find a kit, It would be a great episode to build and fly the competitor. It was built for flight times, so you'd prime your "rubber band" as thick as your thumb, lubricated with washing up liquid (not lemon as I found out!) tied and bound at the peg and hook with wool as it stretches, gently adding 500 turns from your start of 2000 turns per flight until you'd either lost count and given up, or badly cut your finger. Then you'd launch the bugger, and it would torque spiral up to maximum height, then the prop would start to free wheel and it would glide back in straight. I didn't think of binoculars so lost it after the test flights. Somewhere on Dartmoor there was an intact, trimmed KeilKraft competitor waiting for a new home.

Like most of your viewers, Andrew, I spent many long (joyous, messy) years making balsa and tissue planes in my youth. One thing I find 'wrong' - with all due respect to today's manufacturers - is the sheer amount of engineering detail that can be built into a kit nowadays thanks to laser-cutting technology. The integral gussets and webs and locating notches and braces in the plywood parts are amazingly complex, and would take literally weeks to cut by hand. So the model you have is far too nice to risk in the air; which is ironic, because that ultra-intricate construction would make it far stronger than a typical 'splodge of goo' balsa/tissue plane. I suppose that's one good thing about the old, simple construction methods - the planes begged to be flown, and were easy to repair if (when!) they crashed. :-)

I was on the wrong video. We finished ours and show the U/C working. Not sure why you think its to fragile to fly? Its perfect for Indoor or calm evenings. I fly lots of small models this 'fragile'. I suppose it depends what a person sees as fragile? You did awesome. For a first wood build. Think doing that when you were 12 using PVA glue😉😊 because there is no such thing as CA. 😉 lol. Laser cut kits are so easy to build, with all those interlocking tabs.

I wonder, what if you could use toothpicks and/or popcycle sticks instead of balsa. we all know if you just breath on balsa too hard it`ll break. lol

Impressive. I watched the whole build and saw no evidence of broken parts, blood on the wood or plasters on you fingers. If I'd tried it there'd be all three (and probably some bleeps in the audio) It's definitely cute, the tissue paper should tighten up a bit more when it is doped or varnished

Very nice model still want to see it fly. Maybe you could of made it an old school rubber powered free flight , all us old stick and tissue builders understand your thinking you do get attached to something you spend that much time on. Maybe you could get another to satisfy your viewers. 😋😘😅 By the way next time you get one of these kits photocopy the parts before you build and that way you have plans to make a new one when it crashes.

Hello Mr Newton - Very well present video - I hope you don't mind but we captured some screen shots of your video so we could use them on our eBay listing. It's something we've never done before, but we are currently building one of these which we'll then give UK Specification Instructions which will be available as Paper in a Box. We Box this kit as standard - The supplier that sent you yours also boxed it, but occasionally these kits can be sent just as the poly bag and as you know the parts are quite fragile so they don't last the journey when packed like this. Tony Ray is talented young designer with a range of different to traditional build kits. We are trying to sell them in the UK and hoping that Tony continues to expand into more designs. He's currently working on an Avro 504K Biplane that will be larger than his current models and slightly more expensive as it uses more materials. We really like the Bleriot. As stable mate he's kitted the Taube ( known also as the Dove). The Taube was German and was shot down in numbers in WW1 as it was such a slow and sedate spotter plane. I think the Pilot was armed with a revolver. We are currently building a Bleriot which is destined for Radio Control Flight. As you point out the model is fragile. Its often the case with Indoor models like this. They can be very fragile. It why foam is popular indoors. But there are the hardy characters that still fly balsa indoors! and out door in zero wind conditions. Not many times a year in the UK, its rare to be flat calm. Usually at dawn or just before sunset can provide a window of wind free flying. The back end could be very easily strengthened up. I am not sure if its totally necessary as we have yet to fly ours but we have been thinking that very very thin carbon would add very little weight. We have carbon rod as 0.02mm very, thin and that would glue down the longerons. At the price the model is ( fairly economic in Laser Cut kit terms) it could be used as a basis to make a more robust composite models .I'm tempted to try the new Grauper Vector Board as covering instead of tissue. There's a thin 0.02mm its bought in 150 sheet packs - so its a lot of Bleriot covering! But its light and impossible to tear. Its something we'd like to try. Sorry this is long , but like yourself we are enthusiastic about all things aeromodelling. If you want to read more about Vector Board its featured in a article in June 2019 's Aeromodeller , the first and best ever Model Aircraft Mag - despite having fewer pages now a days. Its a quality not quantity magazine. Its difficult when you are a dealer as anything said about a product we sell becomes an advert, some can take offense and hope you dont. Its not a polished Horizon style E Flite video and some could say its negative toward RC flying as at the end you point out it is fragile. My opinion is such balsa models always are. I shall have to make one to see if its the usually fragile state we'd expect a balsa model to be or as to if its more fragile than usual. With the structure being open, its not as strong as covered structures. Its also easier to build in warps. Anyway - enjoyed the video. Thanks for supporting Young Tony's kits. What control surfaces does it employ Andrew? I watched a YT vid of the real thing and I could not determine how this thing banks. I assume it at least has elevators, and maybe a rudder.

You will know this Andrew but a small amount of meths in the water helps shrink the tissue evenly.

AND READY FABRIC SHOULD BE A RELAXATION BUILD FOR YOU . THE BLERIOT XI WHEN IT S THE AMATI KIT AND ITS WELL BUILT COMES OUT AS A GEM . NOT ONLY IN SMALL SCALES BUT ALSO IN RADIO CONTROLED LARGER SCALES. sorry for the capital letter still not used to it !
