Being from Georgia myself, all the references to the soviet union and Georgia specifically are really interesting to me. I read one of the comments saying the clothing reminds them of what people actually dress like here, and I agree. It's ironic how expensive the Vetement's clothes are and how now, it has become clothing that the people from other "social classes" wear. I love your channel and these videos, and it was especially interesting watching different people's take on Demna's work.

Congrats on the project, it is really insightful and Vetements is really well suited for this excercice ! I just want to add my 2 cents on Demna's irony and its impact on local Georgian fashion, based on my own experience of Georgia. As mentioned in your video, the looks presented are familiar to anyone living in post-soviet countries as it is EXACTLY how Georgian youth used to look un-ironically and looks like now, ironically. What I've found absolutely brilliant about Vetements' international aura is that it made Georgian local sens of fashion (creating looks from whatever you find in 2nd hand shops, from humanitarian aid and fake brands imported from nearby Turkey's huge textile industry) into a worldwide trend as well as a fashion prank on the wealthy. From the civil war in the 90s, Georgia's new state developed in a context of chaos and highly unregulated market, where a few got insanely rich and powerful while the rest of the population still lives in deep poverty. There is no middle class in Georgia: you have on one side the young student taking the old soviet bus dressed in all-synthetic fake brands and some random t-shirts from the thrift shop, starring the logo of a local Germany volleyball club no one has ever heard about... and people dressed in full real Prada driving their BMW G-Wagon on the shitty roads of Tbilisi. Since Vetements got international, these insanely rich people of Georgia are now dressed exactly like the young kid working at the local liquor store because they now shop at Vetements and Balanciaga. To me, this is the ultimate power and irony of Vetements : empowering the disadvantaged Georgian youth by making them the aesthetics of the local oligarchs.

I think the anarchy motif is in no way a criticism of anarcho-socialism especially if you look at Denma's work as a whole. By far the most common thread throughout all of his work is satirizing consumer capitalist culture so it's hard for me to believe that he would turn around and say "well socialism is also bad as you can see from the anarchy symbol being upside down". I think it's much more likely a criticism of the cooptation of more radical leftist ideas to fit into capitalist culture (take for instance the new Disney-owned Cruella movie whose identity revolves around anarchistic ideals).

What people in the west usually don't understand is how similar fashion shopping, luxury industry and the whole subculture surrounding it is similar to everyday shopping experience in the eastern bloc. Food and other items were distributed as 'drops', and you had to know people to get a good position in the queue to buy this stuff first. You buy ANYTHING regardless, because later you may exchange it for something else. Everyday consumer goods were similar to Hermes bags and the way they were distributed was very similar.

This show is fascinating, off-putting, evocative of the socio-historical, bold, funny and deeply frightening. The sort of clothes you could see at a seedy club or, in fact at a riot in Washington DC (referring more to the flag play at Vetements ss19). This is ironic luxury, stripped of aspirational cliches. A viewer is well within his, her or their right to hate these clothes, and that only serves to heighten the potency of the performance. One of my favorite shows, and some of my favorite clothes, of the past few years

I think the upside anarchy sign is a talk on how commodification has abstracted and takes Revolutionary aesthetics in order to delude them and remove the message instead of just a general diss on anarcho communism

I think the green hair, white hoodie with the silk road logo look is a direct reference of Rou Rot, a member of CRIM3S, one of the bands to pioneer the witch house sound and aesthetic in the early 2010s. He rocked camo a lot and if you google image his name and scroll down a bit you'll find a flick of him with the same greasy green hair in a camo jacket and hoodie. Also SALEM one of the biggest bands in the genre recently made a resurgence after years of silence and released merch incorporating the silk road logo with their own on a white t shirt just like this hoodie. That was less than a year ago though so maybe they got it from here?

A note on the look from 13:12. Maybe he is making a refrence to someone becoming a skinhead (not fully shaven head) plus the black boots
