@@albertkowalski5629 which film has done that? There’s been plenty of exploitation of both men and women throughout history, however in an industry heavily governed by patriarchal gender roles there are differing historical statistics. Well it's not the fault of the filmmakers that gossip sites are run by and for idiots. The film has not once been described as a biopic by them. In fact they have gone out of their way to explain that this is an impressiontic study of the "Myth of Marilyn" and based on a novel. Most film and TV is made for idiots to understand. I'm glad that there are still films made occasionally that treat its audience like adults. The movie is superb in my opinion. A disturbing descent into hell from the point of view of one of the most abused and mistreated actresses in the history of Hollywood.

I think anytime you use someone's name and or likeness you need to have permission from them or their estate and they should share in those profits. This fictionalized accounts of other people's lives only have a captive audience because of the real person so it seems explorative for them to capitalize off of it without consent.

After she was done shooting the dress scene Joe DiMaggio, whom she was was married to at the time, beat her so severely it lead to her divorcing him. And her marriage to Jim Doherty, the first husband, was true. Her guardians were moving out of state and her options were get married or go to an orphanage. She did not want to go to the orphanage, absolutely dead set against it, so she married Jim, who was a neighbor and kind of a friend. And Gladys, her mom, was legitimately insane. She attacked her friend Ida with a knife before she was committed.

I agree with Joseph on this. This movie felt like sensational fan fiction using a real person's life and death, and it felt exploitative to me. Why even make this movie about her? Come up with another character! Marilyn said she didn't want to seem like a joke, and she wanted to be respected for her acting craft. I wish the movie portrayed how strong she was to get to where she did in her life. As for how she died, I'm not even convinced that there wasn't anything shady going on; I wish they would have skipped that altogether.

It was a more honest look at Marilyn than I had ever seen. Who knows the truth? I new she had miscarriages. I had never heard about abortions. Miller said all she wanted was love but felt like she didn’t deserve love. 😢 Hearing Miller talk about Monroe was very real and very heartbreaking. Excellent review!! I believe this style in books is called "roman a clef"? I agree that the best way to do this is to always change the names. They should make it a thinly veiled portrayal of the people involved, so that there's no doubt who the person is supposed to be. I agree it can become problematic when you use the same names, as people can mistake it for a biopic and that can be a problem. I may check this out. Thank you!

Was looking forward to Joseph’s take on this. It’s optimistic to think that the audience will do their due diligence (I don’t even think that’s our job really); biopics themselves often give the audience a false idea of the person (we’ve been shown zero evidence that the civil rights movement effected Elvis in anyway but Baz Luhrman’s film would tell us different. Same with many white savior films about real life figures, etc.) And this isn’t even a biopic, so the general viewer is going to walk away thinking that this all really happened. I think showing extended scenes of SA is most egregious as it’s totally fictional (and then there’s the ethics of that). Obviously, I’m not a fan, but I love y’all’s thoughts, always!!

I liked Ana de Armas' performance more than the film itself. She really should be considered for nominations from all the big awards this fall. I was disturbed by the way Joe DiMaggio abused her after he was presented with the risque pics and after she did that scene from The Seven Year Itch. I thought to myself, "Who did that fool think he was marrying......The Virgin Mary?" I was also disturbed by the whole sequence when she went to see JFK. The men who picked her up really didn't seem enamored by the fact that she was the glamorous movie star Marilyn Monroe, they just seemed like they were picking up another lady friend of the president for a visit, which I think was the point. Also, the casualness of how they just kinda manhandled her and brought her to JFK's room as they were passing by staff and workers in what I'm assuming was the White House. When they were passing through, I noticed that there was a female staffer crying into her hands, and I wondered what that was all about. Anyway, the bj scene and what I interpreted as an unseen sexual assault by JFK kinda shocked me, but in honesty I have read accounts of how sexually voracious JFK was but I do think that was a bit over the top. I too did appreciate the visual of the waterfall imposed under the menage a trois. I thought it was very creative. There were many moments of the narrative where poetic license was used a bit too much but it didn't bother me a lot. I left the film feeling sad about how her life turned out and how even 60 years after her death (8/4/62) the world is still captivated by her life, death, and mythos.

After all she chose to be a star, and chose to continue to work in the movie industry year after year. If they ever make another movie about her I hope it paints a more complete picture of this vibrant, witty human being that had many challenges and obstacles in her life.

Thanks for hitting all the films in the “Marilyn” canon… including, the Judd/Sorvino piece; I didn’t know anyone other than myself and my dear, departed mother ever saw the great Kim Stanley’s “The Goddess”. I don’t think I’m gonna read the JCO’s source novel….at least, not now. Amazon just delivered my copy of “Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye: The Barbara Payton Story”, by John O’Dowd….the last word in “beautiful blond actress gone wrong” porn….

I'm saving this for tonight. I agree with you both. I'm interested in the Lynch aspect (big fan) and the fact that her life was in fact a horror show. The Misfits had Monty Clift who I absolutely adore. Another tragic figure who Marilyn famously stated was an even bigger mess than she was and that loving connection between them is evident on screen. I'd personally like to see a biopic about the infamous Barbara Payton. Check her story out.

@@03817 I've watched that as well. He was devastating beautiful in my opinion even after the accident although he was in agonizing pain. I'd love to see him revisted. Here's Liz's take on Monty which is wonderful. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rrmqaq1y27TWgqs.html

@@03817 one of the 1st method actors. If he hadn't had the accident he probably would have Brando & Dean's roles. A Place In The Sun is heartbreaking. Whenever they play his films on TCM I can't help but watch. He was one of those people where it actually hurt to look at how beautiful he was. His facial vulnerability, body language, and eyes said so much without him saying a word. It's cool to find another Monty fan from time to time. It's sad he's been lost to the ages so I often recommend him to friends who get hooked as well. When Liz saved his life by removing his teeth from his windpipe and the paps showed up to take pictures of his injuries she said if you even try it you'll never get another photo or interview with me ever again. They did snap the car but not him. She was a stand up friend to the end.

The whole first half of the movie should have been cut out. The last half was interesting. The hairline on the wig was the most accurate a hair stylist has gotten to Marilyn down to the widow’s peak although the hairline could have receded more

I was torn with this film, still trying to make up my mind if I truly liked it or not. It was quite long however Anna looked and sounded just like MM to me so I was into that but there was a lot of stuff going on that made me cringe

Have you seen the CBS miniseries version from 2001 with Poppy Montgomery, Ann Margaret, Patricia Richardson, and Patrick Dempsey. It’s the same movie, but done completely different. I never thought a low budget TV movie would be the better adaptation. I strongly recommend you check it out to compare.

i feel like the big things this review is missing is an acknowledgment of surrealism (which is a huge part of the novel, not a biography or in your phrase "what i wanted"), and an acknowledgement of the simulacrum and reproduced images in American culture and film (of which Norma Jean/ Marilyn is a perfect avenue to explore that!). I like the idea of this as a horror film, like a feminist nightmare (no consent, no consent to your reproduction which many actresses were forced to do for their careers), but i agree the movie also demands total sympathy for the character.

Awesome review as always! I agree more with Joseph although you both make great points. Thought the same things like she probably wouldn't be cool with this movie and they could've made her look better but I still respect the film makers visions and I'm sure someone else will make a better movie about her one day

The cinematography was probably my favorite part. But I would have to see it again to get an understanding. I agree the NC-17 rating was not needed. This movie makes me want to read the book.

Now I REALLY want to watch this. I had virtually no interest as I chalked it up to an exploitative film in the same vein as those Manson, and O.J.movies that came out a few years ago. But your review brought so much more interest to this film for me. Both of your opinions really made me think, "oh I'll hate that, oh that's interesting..." So that is a spectacular job on your part. And to evoke LYNCH, and music that is also reminiscent of Lynch films...ok ..MUST SEE NOW. Great job guys! Michael

Totally agree with Nick. The film is not a traditional biopic, but more of a passion play. Ultimately Dominik is using Marilyn Monroe, about the most famous woman of the 20th century, to talk about the suffering of women, not only in Hollywood, but of society in general, and Monroe is about the most perfect vessel for such an exploration. I don't think the film is perfect, but it's still an often emotionally stirring, often visually stunning and beautifully acted by Ana de Armas. I was the whole time with Marilyn, so yeah, it was definitely empathetic.

It didn’t make me pity her but it made me feel bad for her because I feel like she had a lot of rage and pain as Norma Jeane and then with Marilyn, I think it was a defense mechanism to shield the world and herself away from the rage and the pain that she was feeling inside

I watched this movie yesterday and I have watched other Marilyn bios and movies, I feel like this movie is a fifty shades of MARILYN MONROE in a nutshell. Nobody in this lifetime are any other I believe ever thought Marilyn Monroe had a great life but this movie takes it over the edge and beyond. I must say that if there is any amount of truth to Joyce C. OATES Book about Marilyn Monroe and what she endured against her will are so we see in this movie, should strongly be looked into by law enforcement. Titles of very important people of yesteryear that make way to rights of powerful people of today and the titles and riches the hold should be shitting bricks after the nation wide release of this movie. Maybe not enough people read Joyce C. Oates book about the late actress, but this movie is a "GATE OPENING" to a whole new resurgence of # me too. Maybe that's why this movie was made this way in all its extremely bold unfiltered accusations it creates, because I felt like I was watching a movie based on some sort of high profile court case turned into some sort of very extremely twisted Documentary about Marilyn Monroe only without the high profile court case. Maybe I'm missing something, are I just don't get it but I'm pretty sure, "I'm seeing the same movie everyone else is"!!!!!
