I knew someone at work who did this outside work hours. He said he had to pay out of his own pocket for all the LEGAL flashing lighting plus the sirens and radio gear, that he was expected to install onto his OWN motorbike (hundreds of pounds). Think it was voluntary as well (wasn’t being paid for it).

Yes plus then when you stop doing that job you have a bike covered in screw holes from fitting all the extra gear, to remove. Detrimental value on the bike. Doing this job is essentially a key task for the NHS, helping to save lives. I could justify doing it if I was getting paid to do it, otherwise “voluntarily” means I’m out doing this for free, when actually I have a family at home I should be taking care of!

@@AntonyLoveless if they keep it up then the building needs closed down for violating the fire safety codes , those fire doors are what prevents the entire building from burning down in the event of a structure fire , i guess the people working there don't understand that their lives are in danger. If that was me doing your job and i walked in and seen that i would yell a bad at them and throw all of the stuff across the room then tell them if they did it anymore then they won't no longer have a job due to putting them and everybody else's lives in danger.

This guy is saving lives every time he rides. Got a motorcycle? Enjoy riding? Why not offer to be a blood bike rider? You get to ride fast (legally with blue lights!) and you're saving lives with every journey. Without these guys, the NHS could not do any operations, they would not be able to save the lives of people with diseases like Sickle Cell Disease, Cancer, Kidney Disease etc, or save the lives of women who suffer blood loss during birth or anything. There's also an organ biker too I think, a biker who delivers human organs to where they are needed. If I could ride, I would be giving it some serious consideration!. Some super skilled riding there too, setting an example to bikers everywhere.

@@el-yorko-bar3734 I think about this funding question a lot. The whole system needs rejigged. Motability (the government funded charity providing disability vehicles to the disabled who are in receipt of suitable DWP benefit🙄) *made* just over *2 BILLION* in *profit* a couple years back, for that year. Should I repeat that? 🤔 A not for profit charity (Motability) funded by tax payers, made 2 BILLION pounds PROFIT for the year. The company that own/run Motability (nfp charity), are a regular for profit company, and sell the cars after three years useage, and keep the proceeds as profit. The government then pay for the new vehicles via the disabled persons disability benefit. It's basically glorified vehicle contract leasing. If it was fully in-house not for profit run by a government department, that 2 billion would be available for the likes of blood bikes etc. Doesn't that smack you as quite odd, when there are blood bike charities having to rely on volunteers with their own bikes literally relying on public charity to provide an essential service.

@@1986wake1986 From my brief research, many blood bike charities do also require car drivers as live blood cannot be transported in particularly poor weather (below 3'C I believe) on bikes. You still need to have an applicable advanced driving qualification such as IAM or RoSPA and each charity likely has its own additional criteria.

Lot's of ignorant drivers not letting him turn right into the first hospital and self funding explains the retro strobe set up that looks like a police motorcycle from the late 1980's! Similar groups on the mainland too, which beggars the point what on earth are the National Blood Service doing these days, they don't run bikes anymore (they used to a very long time ago) and we shouldn't need volunteers to pick up the slack (but it's bloody good that we have them or we would be sunk!)

Sadly not. The ST1100 was an ex-PSNI bike, and had the factory-installed unit. It would’ve taken funds away from frontlline services if we’d diverted cash to pay for a better unit just to yelp; we learned to work with what we had. Each of our bikes had different blues and twos, depending on their age. One of them was newer and had LED blues, and an array of sirens, yelps, etc, as well as different light configurations.

@@AntonyLoveless That's not uncommon - we had a batch of riot vans that they never wired the horn ring in to change the tones so you were either on with wail or off - I wonder if the same specialist vehicle convertor was used.
