What an amazing project. I follow it since 4-5 years now. But to be a project with global reach and a global audience, the national emphasis is quite strong. I'm not British, as you can see from my name. 😊 And I don't care if it's British or from Iceland or Chile or whatever country on the world. But I'm a big supporter of engineering. And I'm convinced that, from some point in time, certain projects cannot be done on a national base anymore. Just ask how many people from different nationalities works on this project alone ... And where they have to run. So it's a global project already

Great video! I could not help but wonder why the whole drive was not automated. With all those sensors, a computer controlling the staged ignition of the jet engine and then the rocket engine would seem much safer than relying on human judgement and reaction times. I cannot help but think that it is that Andy Green is a pilot that pushed the design towards manual control even with the tight timing tolerances and the huge physical toll that, as Andy has laid out, will affect the driver/pilot. It isn't a land speed record if no one is on board but I do not think that the person on board needs to be in control of the vehicle 100% of the time. Any thoughts?

In the early to mid 1960's, Craig Breedlove and Art Arfons would have a car built and run in less than 1 year. Bloodhound has become so complicated, but it needs to be with the speed they want and systems they need for safety.

@@UncleKennysPlace Yep. I have my own suspicions about what happened to Jessi Combs. I have always been of the opinion that the shape of an F-104 fuselage was unsuitable for use on land because of shockwave build up under the nose cone and ahead of the front wheel. She probably wasn't traveling fast enough for that to happen but I'm sure there would have been a sizeable pressure wave ahead of the front wheel. At that speed, you're definitely into the realms of compressibility.

"Check your staging" When I heard about it I was excited but quickly became concerned. Were talking about raising the LSR by 250mph or so. More than it's ever been raised before....from the highest it's ever been before. Imagine taking the tallest building in the world and saying you're going to add 33% without making it wider. With the engine up high I worry about lateral movement causing it to reliant Robin over which would be a bad day. I have my concerns and as a Britain even I would rather this "only" do 800mph and no more than have a fatal accident. If they set any record I'll be overjoyed but if they manage 1000mph I cant see it being beaten and itll be a saturn5/niel Armstrong moment I'll hold on to forever.

The original design had the rocket engine on top and the key underneath. My understanding is that they had to change to accommodate the rocket’s oxidiser tank and pump. Has the Jaguar engine to operate the pump been replaced with an electric pump then?
@ScarfAndGoggles

Not yet. The rocket isn’t in use for the forthcoming high speed trials (jet only) so the space in the chassis where the rocket oxidiser pump motor (currently the Jaguar V8 engine) lives has been used for an extra jet fuel tank as it will help to have extra fuel on board for the trials. They’ll need the rocket for next year’s attempt on the record, so will have to make a decision Jaguar V8 vs electric motor during the next few months.

Absolutely no idea. He sold the project, but I thought he might still be there. I have seen Ron Ayers about the place but I have no idea if anyone else who was involved with SSC is involved with LSR.

@@Outland9000 Most of the LSR team are from the original Richard Noble team - you can find out more about the team on the website. Richard Noble isn't involved any more, but I think he'll be there when they go for the record run

550hp supercharged V8 just to power the fuel pump. Sick! The poms do this so well. No fuss, no bullshit, no ruaucus publicity, no nationalist chest beating. Nothing to prove to anyone. It will have to be an F104 (Who needs wings!) on wheels.

I can't understand how it could reach 1000mph - I hope that it does, and I'm sure that it will break the current World Record, AND more importantly I hope that Andy Green stays safe, but how on Earth can 1000mph be achieved?

Yes, it’s on the tyres they used to run it at Newquay airport whilst they move it in the workshop. Solid aluminium wheels for the desert later this month (they were in their packing crate when I visited).

I saw an interesting study recently: researchers found that there are 2 groups of people with very high confidence -- those with no ability to do the task at hand and those who are truly expert. I find myself wondering to which group you belong.

I'm delighted to find that this project is back on track. It was so disappointing when it was sidelined! Anyone interested in engineering should find this car exciting. I have a love-hate relationship with technology myself. As a Christian agrarian, I disagree with the premises of technological society, and consider the industrial revolution a disaster for mankind. On the other hand, I cannot but admire what man, God's image, is able to imagine and accomplish. Our technology is superlatively crude compared to the Creator's; but it still reflects His glory. At least, that's how I see it.
